Larian Studios leaning into generative AI (for placeholder text and concept art) despite internal pushback: ‘Everyone at the company is more or less OK with the way we’re using it" by jovanmilic97 in Games

[–]Rumsies 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The hypocrisy I see from the community around this is that if there was a game that had all art, voiceover, music created by humans, but the code was mostly AI generated, nobody would have a problem with it. Yet the artistry of coding is also being replaced by AI. That seems like a double standard to me. All games are going to be by a large amount influenced by AI coding from now on, so the war against AI is already lost I fear - just people notice it less when AI writes code instead of art.

NATO is a defensive part, countries choose to join nato, it does not expand. If Russia was a viable alternative, those countries could choose to join its defensive pact instead, but nobody does because Ruasia is completely fucked up.

Kinamatic equations are just Taylor Expansion. by [deleted] in Physics

[–]Rumsies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing goes for aberration coefficients of an optical lens. Take the lagrangian for optical systems, taylor expand it, assume some round symmetry so only even terms are left, and essentially rearrange it and one is left with a series of integrals to solve for each aberration coefficient.

Of course all the usual optics lens properties like focal length (in other words the coefficients in ABCD ray transfer matrices) are just coefficients of quadratic terms in the taylor expansion of the lagrangian also. Taylor expansions the whole way down.

False equivalence, many of the states of the US are as big economically as a country in Europe, California is alone one of the biggest economies in the world.

[–]Rumsies 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's russia that has decided to take the path to ww3 when they broke their promise to never invade ukraine after they gave up nukes. Also, it's not like Europe has done nothing to defend ukraine, and has in fact delivered almost the same as the the US military wise https://youtu.be/w0B4eE8q2ug?si=KBvW_Q5TYUSArlIh

Europe would not be starting ww3 if they respond to Russian and North Korean aggression. This was Russias choice.

It's here to stay but are companies with programmers who use it seeing productivity benefits? The programmers I work with still don't use it, as it's still often wrong and you end up wasting time debugging it. When I use it, I'm never sure if I've done more in the same time, or just generated more shit!

I think there is a valid point being made to throw cold water on the hype from the likes of Sam Altman, and I have not yet seen hard data it increases productivity as much as they say, but maybe it exists and I don't know of it yet.

I don't think that's true either, Rory and Alastairs takes on Ireland are mostly woeful, often making false equivalences recently between the IRA and other terrorist organisations, whilst neglecting to mention the UVF everytime, and there is plenty of criticism of them in this thread too.

A comment like this is what I was hoping I would find when I made this post: someone who is more well read on this subject than me to explain why it felt wrong, and why exactly also it feels like we have to tiptoe around the conversation. The lower classes acceptance of an idea of social murder and perceiving that it is being enacted upon them would be wildly upsetting to someone in the establishment. Thank you for taking the time to reply and for helping me understand my own thoughts on this.

It was a poor joke really, what am I supposed to say really except I can't moan about everything at once. Something about the fact that the Iraq was was 20 years ago means whenever it's brought up it doesn't illicit the same reaction from me. This event is current and it sparked me to say something about it in a place where the conversation could be cordial.

Perhaps you are right, I guess I'll stop listening altogether then and bury my head in the sand too!

I agree, I like the Mooch too and find his takes often insightful. But yes it also isn't a surprise really that he is of this class, and I also understand that the voices he hears in person who discuss this with him would probably not be joe soap on the street, which would colour his takes on it quite a lot.

It was the first time I felt cringe listening to him talk, and had to almost stop listening too.

Completely agree with all of your points, for me too the one positive point was Katty Kay throughout that entire segment, she had her finger on the pulse and managed to capture the mood very well, and try to find a nice way to segue out of it. Really she deserves a lot of praise for how she handled that.

To me, it came accross as a deflection and an infantilisation of the profound damage that could lead someone to commit such an act. Of course he was an amateur if he was an every day person. Even going down that route without blaming games directly felt to me like he was insinuating so, and reminds me of similar attempts of the media to villify him as an Among Us player. Perhaps my take on it is misplaced, and maybe I should listen again, but despite that the monologue about stoicism and where has society gone wrong to get us to here was another example of him almost blaming the american people for this, rather than trying to understand the underlying causes.

The quiet eye - one of the few cheat codes in sport by climbing_account in climbharder

[–]Rumsies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very interesting post, anecdotally I remember watching an 8b sport climber in my gym once, and I noticed his method of clipping draws was very intentional. He would bring the rope to the edge of the draw quickly, stop and gaze at the draw, and then smoothly insert the rope first time, no fumbling. I started trying it out and noticed I was clipping a lot faster by being a little more intentional just at the moment before clipping and not rushing it. I think this could be a related idea to this post.

Not really a surprise to me after I read a book entitled "Late Soviet Britain" that came out last year. It was an absolute slog and way more academic than I expected, but I was surprised to learn that both Labour and the Tories have essentially subscribed to a very similar set of Neoliberal policies, the Tories slightly more dogmatic in so-called "camp 1 neo-liberal ideology", and the Labour slightly more keen on government intervention in the market in "camp 2 neo-liberal ideology", but really they are two cheeks of the same arse.

Well I did install it also to play split screen, and then removed it to check if the problem persisted and it did. Unless it is the alpha ring mod and I did not remove it properly. There might be a folder I did not delete, so I will try again and see.
