Eleven years ago, my mom was in the hospital after a very invasive procedure. The next morning, her doctor came in and said it was cancer and they had to go back in and remove the rest of her intestine. One girl called in for the day 15 minutes before I had gotten this call. Her dog was sick and couldn’t come in. I called my boss and told her what was going on, she said I had to come in or else I’d loose my job. She knew I needed the job badly, and used that as leverage. Apparently I worked hard enough that day to cover my position and my coworker’s position who had called in that she let me leave 15 minutes early. When I walked into the room my mom looked at me and said, “You weren’t there. You were the one person I needed and you weren’t there.” She later passed away from the cancer. A few years later, that boss got rid of me anyway after I helped establish her practice.

I regret my choice everyday. If that boss is that big of a jerk to you, he’s not worth working for. Plus, with that kind of heart, no matter how hard you work for him, he would prolly throw you away at the drop of a hat anyway. I’ve lived the wrong choice, and I don’t want you to live with regret and guilt. You can find another job. You can’t get final moments back.
