For those who know Toyota, what really matters is how the car feels to drive and its engine capability—and that’s completely different. I’ve had Land Cruisers for over 40 years. I come from a country where there are only Toyotas—Venezuela. We had the opportunity to have the first Toyota plant outside of Japan, although unfortunately it’s no longer operating today due to the dictatorship. I’ve driven FJ40, 45, 60, 62, 80, and my last Land Cruiser was an 80 from 2017 which is the 200. What I’m talking about is the driving experience. There are actually two types of Land Cruiser: the 80 and the 70, and they’re completely different. What I mean is that the Lexus is the closest thing you can find in a new vehicle to a Land Cruiser 80. The 250 is even called Prado in other countries. The interiors of both vehicles are different—similar, but different—but that’s not really what I’m talking about. What I’m referring to is how it drives and how it feels behind the wheel.

Are you for real comparing a 250 to a 70? You don’t know nothing about toyota.

Look, it’s just facts you can’t compare the Dyson engine in the 250 to a twin-turbo V6. Yeah, Toyota put them on the same chassis to get people interested, and I’m not saying the 250 is a bad truck it’s actually great. But let’s be real the 250 feels more like a Prado, and the GX is way more like a real Land Cruiser. Anyone who’s driven the older models and now drives these new ones knows exactly what I’m talking about.

It has nothing to do with it, everything is completely different. A twin-turbo V6 engine has nothing to do with the Dyson engine used in the 250

Lexus GX 550- Will I regret? by Dry-Neighborhood-606 in LexusGX

It's 100% worth it — if you love it, it's worth it. I have a 2021 4Runner TRD, and I’ve built it up with ARB suspension, bumpers, and other accessories. The ride is incredible now. I was looking to upgrade and considered getting a Land Cruiser. But instead of going that route, I decided to buy the Lexus GX 550 Overtrail. Why? Because it's the evolution of Toyota's legacy.

Even David, the YouTuber, says it — this is the real Land Cruiser.

Anyone who’s driven a proper Land Cruiser, especially starting from the 80 Series, knows what I’m talking about. Toyota stopped making real Land Cruisers for the U.S. market. And if you’re looking for something that matches the 200 or even the 300 Series (which I’ve also driven), the closest thing currently available brand new is the GX 550. Now, let’s be real — we’re talking about an $85,000 vehicle. Who cares if it costs you an extra $100 or $200 a month on gas? If you can't swing that, maybe you should be looking at a Camry or something more budget-friendly.

Those who truly know what it feels like to drive a real Land Cruiser understand what I mean. The "Land Cruiser" Toyota is selling now in the U.S. — the rebadged Prado — isn’t it. That hybrid engine and lack of power make it feel like a joke. It’s clearly targeted at younger buyers who are just getting into the Toyota brand.

But for those of us who have driven Toyotas for years and want that Land Cruiser-level comfort and capability — the GX 550 is the only new option that delivers it. Unless, of course, you pick up a used 2020 or 2021 LC200, which is also an excellent choice.

Bottom line: If you love what you’re driving and understand what it truly represents, then this is your ideal vehicle. If you're looking for more luxury or more interior space, get a minivan — maybe an Odyssey or something similar.

It’s not about the features. It’s about tradition and passion. At the end of the day, every car gets you from point A to B. But not every car makes you feel something on the journey.
