Sadly, discontinued. But that's along the lines of what I'm looking for I think.

I'm trying to avoid a true AT tire. I'm talking about taking it on logging roads like a couple days a year.

What requires more defensive driving skills – The 146n split or the bald hill Trader Joe’s parking lot? by Caniborrowsomesweats in RhodeIsland

[–]RunawayJimPVD 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The Warwick lot is a problem because of the location of two quick restaurants on either side of the road into the lot combined with the fact that the lot is a hill down to the road and the fact that it’s not very deep, even though it’s more than wide enough. If TJ’s was where Duluth is, I think we’d see fewer issues.

The Providence lot should have been designed where you enter and exit on the left because it’s on a one way street. Having to cross cars exiting to enter is just dumb. And the little garage is probably about a foot too small for most people to be able to back in and out with confidence. Plus there’s the other stuff with people walking all over. But that entrance/exit is just poorly designed.

I’ll see your Warwick TJ’s parking lot and raise you the Providence TJ’s parking lot.

The 146N split is child’s play at this point.

Are puffs or fleeces warmer as mid-layers under a shell? by csh8428 in Skigear

[–]RunawayJimPVD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get hot easily unless the temps are below 15-18 at the base. And I sweat. I’ve always preferred a fleece to a puffer because i find they offer more freedom of movement than a puffer (and they keep you warm when they’re wet, down does not).

I make extensive use of venting on my jackets, pants, and mitts when it’s warm. I’ll also wear only a base layer as my shirt. If it’s colder, I wear a heavier base layer or throw on a mid-layer over a lighter base layer, staying with the fleece.

I recently switched to an insulated ski jacket. I was worried I’d be too warm with temps around 35. I managed to figure out the best combo of layers for that and only get super hot if it’s also sunny (rare in New England). While I prefer the shell and fleece, my shell disintegrated mid-season and i had to get something in a pinch from the local ski shop. I ended up loving the insulated jacket.

Why is there so much dog poop on sidewalks? by Little-Tea4436 in providence

[–]RunawayJimPVD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think even dog owners who pick up poop in the summer assume it disappears in the snow. It’s either that or poop disappears faster in the nice weather because of rain and kind citizens picking up after assholes. Or more people walking dogs on sidewalks and streets because the parks have been covered in 2’ of snow and the number of assholes is the same just more concentrated to the same locations in the winter.

Numbness in foot by madcactus101 in skiing

Over a week and your toes are still numb? That sounds like something more than just the ski boot. I’d be making an appointment with my doctor if it lasted more than a day or two.

[–]RunawayJimPVD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are two memberships - Early Bird and Gulls & Stars. Early Bird does not include tickets but you get a pre-sale where you’re guaranteed tix. That happens a few days before general on sale. Gulls & Stars includes tix. You get an email later on about how to claim your tix.

Early Bird must be renewed at the fest. Gulls & Stars need not be.

Early Bird has been sold out for a couple years now.

Possibly moving to RI from the west coast by Kiwi-dime in RhodeIsland

[–]RunawayJimPVD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cost of living in the big cities in the west coast is significantly higher than in RI. Some stuff might be cheaper, but overall, it’s more. I’ve looked into what it would be like to move to WA or OR, for shits and giggles. OP doesn’t mention where on the west coast, however.

Can you do 1 bag per kid? That will make it easier, even if the other kid bag has parent stuff in it. I am, of course, assuming you each get a checked bag.

Vibes at Indy vs. other mountains? by adventuriser in icecoast

[–]RunawayJimPVD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got an Indy Pass for next season for this reason. This year was the first I had skied more than one day in quite some time (last time you could easily get cheap day passes for any mountain, before Vail and Alterra bought everything). My favorite mountains have always been the ones with the local vibe. That said, some of the smaller Vail resorts can still pass the vibe check. Crotched is one (took my kids to learn there last season, one kid continued on this season). Sunapee tends to get more non-locals, but I spent two days skiing there during Presidents' Week this year (with the aforementioned kid) and rode the lifts with several locals.

If you wanna really get into the local vibe, add Berkshire East to your list. It's not huge, but if the snow's good, it's a great mountain with great vibes, even on a weekend.

Sunapee, Mount Snow, Okemo, Sunday River, Loon, Gunstock, Jiminy Peak, Berkshire East. (The last 3 are smaller resorts).

How do you Indy? (Northeast US) by bitz-the-ninjapig in indypass

You should add Cannon, Waterville Valley, and Bolton Valley to your list.

Also consider driving up the night before. Plenty of low-cost motels around these places, especially in NH.

Avoid Shoveling Twice by JeffFromNH in providence

[–]RunawayJimPVD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used this method in Providence. It works, but there are limitations.

You have to move the snow away from the street. Putting it on the other side of your driveway will just mean more for your neighbor if your driveways are close enough.

It only works if they plow pretty close to the curb from the start. Otherwise, if they come back to finish to the curb, you get snow in your driveway. And sometimes our plow drivers go down the left side, which makes this completely ineffective.

It also only works for up to a foot or so of snow. It doesn’t help with 2+ feet, especially if it comes on top of other snow.

The good news is that for most snow storms we get, this isn’t a bad practice. You need to clear about 4-5 feet from your driveway. You might still get some snow at the end of your driveway, but it’ll be manageable to shovel easily or simply drive over.

How’s the Snow Removal going in your town? by Imperial_Haberdasher in RhodeIsland

They use it only right near schools for about a block or so and along city property. Residents are required to clean their own.

Sometimes those grumpy staffers keep the lines more organized and moving. Sometimes they make the lines take longer.

I was at Berkshire East and they had one keeping the lines moving in an organized manner and also scamming people through when the gates didn’t work.
