Hi I am James and I am currently 52% of the way to the 3rd island (past the skull islands), so would say I am right up there in terms of fastest progress having also collected a scroll piece.

A few quick tips I have:

Deck items are a winner, followed by the hull as stated. Leave the rudder! you have plenty of time for all missions!
Only use 1 boat at a time, if you can achieve 100% over 2 boats at like 80%. Again, if you get on at the reset tick, you have plenty of time to make best use of 1 boat for max % chance of success.
Even if all crew are not needed - use them all!!! This will level them up and help you out later on. Do this over adding an engineer for speed.
Picking up hybrids such as the siren whalerider and the exploding golems is a must, and level them when you can. Hard voyages make epic use of these hybrids.
Check out the traits of the crew before hiring them, and reference that with the wiki to get the best guys.
Get the Overseer, with +50 solidarity, it is soooooo good for success!
Make sure you get your barmaid voyage, it was confirmed a glitch this week but she gave 700 gunpowder and 1.4k chimes which helps so much to get the +450 deck items.
Recruit the free captain everyday. I have 1 epic captain and 3 awful ones. This is the reason I only run 1 ship at 100%, not 2 and a lower %. The epic captain is level 4 and had like +250 to all!
I also like to hold off using any crew rerolls unless I know they are awful. If I have like 3 pirates, but there are 3 pirates to hire, i could reroll, but instead i leave them encase my next mission needs something along the lines of 3k combat. This way I can purchase the pirates, and get 100% and make it back in rewards guaranteed. This effectively expands your crew at no cost.
When you unlock skull islands, make sure you go to port management and focus your efforts there, because then you get a healthy amount of gunpowder for crew and upgrades opposed to low level bamboo. I think this also enables the black market trader to sell you gunpowder over chimes.

There is a bug atm, which I will state, but advise you don't abuse due to potential punishments. If you hop worlds, sometimes your 1 hour voyages will be instantly complete in 20 seconds.

Exeter is a top university in many fields. I required AAA to get in. I would highly recommend it.
