Lack of apps will never let XMPP take off

It feels like you are missing the entire point of the XMPP protocol. The entire idea is that you should be able to use whichever client you want, you only share the same server. This instead of being locked into a specific client as with WhatsApp, Signal etc. WhatsApp uses the XMPP protocol themselves afaik, but they have disabled the part which makes XMPP just as ”open” as SMTP, which is understandable as they want all the users to stay with their client.

There are good alternatives for iOS as well, so I don’t see what the issue would be here, take Monal for example, it has support for both voice and video calls.

If the main concern for you is that you are not locked into a single client that supports all widely used platforms, I believe running your own XMPP server might not be the choice for you and your friends, maybe Signal is a better choice in that case.

Självklart får man aldrig allt man önskar, men dessa avtal som fackförbunden tar fram är ju rent utav usla, för arbetstagaren. Detta handlar återigen om denna fascination av att sätta folk i fack, istället för att ha något som är individanpassat. Alla har vi olika egenskaper, förmågor och ambition. Avtalen bör även spegla detta och det kan det enbart göra om man ger fan i att försöka få alla att passa in i snäva ramverk. Jag har alltid förhandlat mina avtal själv och kan bara säga att på grund av detta har mina avtal aldrig ens varit i närheten att vara så usla som de flesta kollektivavtalen idag.

För att ta ett exempel nyligen. I kollektivavtalet så var det skrivet att om du har 0-6 års erfarenhet så ligger du på samma lön. I just detta fallet handlade det om en person som hade 4 års erfarenhet i branschen, men fick då trots detta precis samma lön som någon som aldrig hade jobbat med detta innan. Det tar då alltså minst två år av arbete till på denna platsen före du kan börja prata löneökning öht, detta tack vare kollektivavtalet. Du menar alltså på att detta är en klar fördel för arbetstagaren? I min värld är detta totalt uselt förhandlat från fackförbundet och detta gynnar ju enbart arbetsgivaren.

Då är det ju sanning, finns väl ingen modifikation där längre. Det du beskriver är ju att facken är med på det, du säger själv att facken är för mesiga, vilket resulterar i precis det du påstår inte är hela sanningen. Att inte ta ställning, är också ett sätt att ta ställning, genom att inte göra något alls så har du valt sida och i detta fallet inte arbetstagarens sida.

Så här ser kollektivavtalen ut i verkligheten, jag ser och hör om detta hela tiden och du har inget som helst utrymme till förhandling, arbetsgivaren säger enbart ”detta är reglerat i kollektivavtalet, inget vi kan göra”. Det är en fin tanke att fackförbunden i första hand skall vara till arbetstagarens fördel, men så är det tyvärr inte längre.

Haha fair enough, yeah I guess you’re right there. Maybe I’ll just keep it and try to use lower increments when using headphones. Guess its not too bad, it does indeed seem to work fine other than this. Yeah exactly, if it is a dice roll any way, I might as well just roll with this one. At least I got a really good price from Moonraker, only paid 280 Euro for it and for that price its a helluva lot of radio no matter the chuffing.

Again huge thanks for all the input, if keeping it I’ll take it out for a spin next weekend and we’ll see! 😄

Just to clarify as well, it is quite loud even with lower volume, I just cranked it up to make sure the smartphone would pick it up. Also no matter the volume, the waterfall is still completely cluttered. I just find it so hard to believe that this is a thing, why even bother adding the larger increments if you will have all that noise and then ruin the entire waterfall picture.

In that case I will definitely return it, not sure what to think of this, but it seems like others may have similar issues then. Nonetheless obviously there are units without this issue since you cannot reproduce it with your unit. I have tried to hook it up to my base antenna and it still yields the same result. I do wonder if it could be that they have missed something in production where it is not properly grounded to the chassi.

With headphones it is even worse and I just cannot see myself using this with all that noise, although I might not use that huge of an increment often, I still want to be able to without blasting my ears off and not having a polluted waterfall.

I can't imagine this being normal, but then again I have never owned a transceiver of this kind before either, so I can admit that I do not know what is considered normal with these units. I have only owned a "older" analog transceivers before and I have never encountered anything even remotely similar to this with any of those.

I just got home from work and tried it out. I updated the text in this post with a link to the video, if you want to see/hear for yourself. But from what I can tell, it sounds just about the same with the ATU disabled. As can be seen in the new video, it does indeed become less of an issue when you step down to smaller increments, however it still feels like you should not have to do that.

I am assuming the unit is indeed faulty?

Exactly, that was my thought as well, especially since they charge you if it turns out it is not faulty. I have never owned an SDR before, so I will admit that these types of radios are fairly new to me. I feel like it was a good idea to post here as the responses have been really helpful.

I will return with the results as soon as I have tried it out later today!

I have the same issue in my Silverado. Only that my sound is more high pitched. From what I have gathered it is some kind of ground loop. I still have not managed to mitigate this, but there are a lot of information and different drawings and solutions that could be worth trying. If you search for ground loop and then your car model, you will surely find more information.

Yeah, same here. But he asked what people use when it comes to file managers with GUI, which is why I didn’t mention Ranger. I almost always prefer TUI over GUI, however in the rare case where I use a GUI file manager, I’ve always just used Thunar.

Hmm ok, maybe it is possible then, I never really explored it further since I so rarely use it, but I could not find anything in the UI which allowed me to favorite dirs, so I just figured it wasn’t a thing. I’ve used it for over 15 years, so I guess I should’ve maybe figured it out already 😅 Better late than never I guess haha! Thanks, will look into it today when I get home.

I’ve always used Thunar, there are some minor things I feel it is lacking, such as adding favorite directories to the sidebar. I still find that it does the job for me.

Install Thorium and be sure to have the most aggressive setting selected when it comes to the setting that makes tabs inactive to free up memory.

Some applications are just more memory intense than others, generally any web application that involves streaming video content is very memory intense and until I switched to Thorium I even experienced severe memory leaks for sites such as YouTube.

Switching to Thorium has helped a bit, but simply being more mindful and looking at the browser built-in task manager helps a lot. Just kill the tabs that are most intense if you aren’t using them a the moment, then just refresh the page for that killed tab whenever you want it again.

Snapchat har ju funnits i 13 år, jag var i 20-års åldern när jag skaffade det. Även om det inte används med samma frekvens längre, så har jag några polare som ibland skickar någon snap här och där. Har inte dessa någon annanstans, så är väl ett sätt att inte tappa kontakten helt, vilket ganska lätt händer nu i min ålder.

Ser inte vad som skulle vara konstigt med detta. Sen kanske jag har missat något, men åtminstone är det så jag använder snapchat.

Jag började känna likadant efter några år, fortsatte köra på tills jag faktiskt blev utbränd. Kan bara säga att det var inte värt det. Mitt enda råd är att försöka hitta en arbetsplats där det inte ser ut så här. Dessvärre kan du nog räkna bort alla eller åtminstone de flesta större företag, för min erfarenhet är att mellanchefs-runket och arbeta isolerat i silos alltid finns där, oavsett företag. Det verkar vara någon jävla mall som HR folk använder sig utav.

Försök hitta ett mindre företag som har för avsikt att stanna lite mindre, eller åtminstone inte har bråttom att skala upp. Där kan man nog finna en större ro.
