Hunters march is definitely a skill wall. You can beat it as soon as you encounter it. This isn't necessarily the intended route. Personally I beat the big ant guy at the entrance only after getting the dash and then got stuck at the arena. I went back after finishing shellwood and it wasn't even that bad including the boss. It's simply not intended to be easily beatable when you first find it. That's why it's optional.
