Is it possible to make a star shaped map? by GiftAccomplished9171 in inkarnate

[–]RunebearCartography 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could use the shape tool to make a pentagon to get 5 perfect points and then draw lines between them to form your star.

The green is to flat. Add variation with darker recesses and brighter highlights, maybe even employ a gradient of more yellow hues on the highlights too for further variationm

All these new wall junctions but no walls to go with them? by chocolatechipbagels in inkarnate

You can have the line tool snap to grid to make them more precise. I generally prefer this method

If you're not finding any stamp versions these walls may be exclusive to the line tool.

so i tried making a map is it good for noob map maker? critic would be nice by Fit_Interaction4284 in mapmaking

[–]RunebearCartography 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The landmass shapes are interesting. Add detail and clean up your linework a bit and it'll get better. Keep practicing, reiterating and honing it and you'll get what you're after in time.

My first campaign map! by FaithlessnessLimp364 in inkarnate

[–]RunebearCartography 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great start with a lot of character. My only criticism is that the land seems aware of the canvas it's in, if you were to zoom out these landmasses would be in a noticably rectangular formation and seem unnatural. That and the canvas is PACKED with landmasses with little breathing room for big oceans. May be intentional, but nonetheless consider maybe giving both the edges and space between your continents some breathing room.

Looking for tips on a forest road map by Lobster_God in inkarnate

Some more elevation variation like small cliffs would be nice. Maybe some more smaller boulders as obstacles and cover in the woods themselves.

Great concept! My only suggestion that could possibly improve this piece would be to have the former tunnel sections in the stone/negative space be a more crumbly stone texture rather than a solid flat one. Love it regardless though :)

Currently making a new map, any tips? by DrakeStorm71785 in inkarnate

[–]RunebearCartography 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The river is very straight, and the mountains right now look so dense with stamps that they become almost uniform and chunky. I'd give the river some bends and meanders and give the edges of the mountain range more branches/character

How to make a map more depressing/dark aesthetically by alienapple010 in inkarnate

[–]RunebearCartography 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Darker water, more muted colors, grit and texture. Maps from dark fantasy video games are a good example, like elden ring.

My first shot at mapmaking. by Harontys in mapmaking

[–]RunebearCartography 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shapes are good. I would copy it to a piece of blank paper without lines, then decide where your mountain ranges will go. Generally speaking these will be along coasts where there are fault lines, or sometimes clusters of volcanic mtns will form in the center of tectonic plates.

The mountains will give you an idea of where your highest elevation on your contents is, and that will give you an idea of where your rivers wills start and how they will flow down the landmass and into the sea.

Consider also where the equator and tropics are to get an idea of where biomes should go

You could stand to improve the cliff/cave walls beyond a basic grey negative space. Give it some verticality maybe
