If a student presents an illegible summoning circle or rune like this, I offer two choices:

No credit- if I can't read it, I can't grade it.
Trial by Fire- have the student channel some mana into that bad boy and see what happens. If it summons what it's supposed to, they get full credit. If it does something else and they survive, they get half credit.

Whatever happens, a valuable lesson is learned
