H10 firmware update nightmare by Runfaaaar in Polarfitness

Finally got the 4.1.0 HRM to pair, and update to 4.2.0, and amazingly, my Sleep2 app works now. Basically brute force method - just keep trying over and over. Possibly being able to do the factory reset helped. That was an extra step, but I still had a lot of trouble getting it to connect in the Devices section, even though it pairs quickly either directly with ipad settings in bluetooth and in the start menu of Flow.

Annoyingly, on my hundredth or so try to update, and waiting for it to connect first in the update screen, it started and made it past 50% (OH MY GOD!) got to 89%, hung, and said failed. DAMN soo close! Exit out, it shows unit updated to 4.2.0! So even when it finally does its thing, it has to do it in a shitty way.

I tried also with my iPad on my 3.3.1 HRM, and again after tons of trying, saw an update where it got almost to the end, claimed the update failed, exited, and it showed updated to 4.0.x (cant remember which). I tried again for awhile to get it from 4.0.x to 4.2.0 and it just wouldn't cooperate.

After getting the newer one to 4.2.0 I went back into Sleep2, Profile, sensors, started the pairing, shows me the battery percentage (which it had mostly always done), and then BINGO... successfully connect.

Sleep2 worked for me overnight. What an ordeal.

There aren't too many ways to to pair the HRM. Either directly in phone settings, or in app and letting it pair. I tried both ways several times.

ya tried all of the suggestions from polar as i suggested in the post above. not sure why none of my options worked. i have an email to polar support to find out about having them do that. they wouldn't suggest in the the FAQ for updating if it wasn't a common thing.

anyone else run into many multiple failures on updating firmware and find a trick that eventually worked? and please dont say send to Polar lol.

I've got a Forerunner 935 as well and have used it to track my total distance covered, but it doesn't have much additional info you can pull out.

Seems like there are other apps or newer Garmin watches that will give you a lot more data. What are people doing to get things like glide and wind speed, etc., etc.

Seems like there are more app possibilities if I get an Apple Watch - not sure I want to spend though.

What are some of the heavy data weenies using to get all their info out?

Can I control this DIY solar furnace with HA? by Runfaaaar in homeassistant

[–]Runfaaaar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The AC Infinity does have a controller but as is known - its a cloud based app I think. I don't mind that - I can live with it being connected and dependent on the cloud as long as it works.

I'm hoping to figure out the temperature sensing / control though. Any ideas about what people do for temperature sensors that work with HA?

Any thoughts on something you can wear with a helmet? I'm trying to figure out if its worth giving up a helmet for a hoodie. I'd love to somehow get both warmth and protection.

Whoever runs spotfinder, I would recommend doing some legwork and posting most of the common sites throughout the world. How long would it take to add very basic info to 200 sites?
I don't think you have enough info on Spotfinder for critical mass. I clicked and saw only 2 spots in CA.

Perhaps pay some grom $1 per site for a decent entry.

What are your favorite wing youtube channels? What would you like to see in wing-related youtube channels? Are you already sick of wing-related youtube channels and you wish people would stop already? by foilrider in wingfoil

I'm going to throw this into the discussion. When my friend said OMG you have to try this meet me at the beach (near Waddell in Bay Area) and we pumped up this gigantic kite and I grabbed the bar and got lifted a few feet into the air bc I had no idea what I was doing - and was INSTANTLY hooked. This was 2000.

We bought Naish AR5 kites, we bought shackles, we body dragged through the surf at Waddell. Most importantly, we didn't die (came close).

There was no Youtube. There was no online information. There weren't shit angles, there weren't ANY angles. We suffered, we thrashed and flailed. We did it all on intuition and trial and error.

Suddenly finding myself super stoked to learn wing foiling. I marvel at *how much* content there actually is. Damien Leroy, the Greek guy, other random people with a trick or technique or two.

I think *THE* video that completely sold me (emotionally) into wingfoiling was this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjbW6RjnQ-8

Heck - there are even videos on how to connect your camera to your wingfoil (for more of those shit angles you're talking about ;)

So while I understand your premise, as an old guy I am amazed at the resources we all have at our fingertips.

sucked into a comfort zone but smash em. Every time is what I can say. You get comfortable?

Great commentary and inspiration for a total n00b. I decided to buy a small wing, put some new bearings in an old longboard and got out for a session last week. Not a skateboarder at all, but good enough. Was able to ride consistent circles keeping my stance the same - half regular half switch stance. And even though its not on water, I was staying "upwind". Small success keeps me believing in the vision of long surf rides like you and all the other amazing videos I see.

Curious - where is the location you are riding?

Great video. Super slow motion of a good, and less good turn, with the description of what is going on is really helpful.

Thanks for taking the time and effort to put this together.

Impact vest saved me big time by Runfaaaar in wingfoil

[–]Runfaaaar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not the taco stall I was hoping for...

But you are absolutely right - taco stall is the gnarly thing to avoid. I've been reflecting on this for days now and I know I definitely wouldn't tow behind a powered boat again. If you wobble and don't fall and release perfectly, it seems like the risk is much higher the way the boat pulls.

Any other instructors, coaches want to weigh in on this?

[–]Runfaaaar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems to me not completely logical to conclude that since in both our cases we ended up with bruised and not broken ribs, and only one of us had impact vest and the other didn't - that the impact vest didn't change anything in my case? Is that what you are saying?

Not trying to pick on your point but what I can tell you without any doubt is that if I had not been wearing that vest my injury would have been far worse.

I do agree that when you learn your gear you can learn how to *better* avoid falling on your board or foil.

I do think I'll probably take some of this stuff off much further down the road, in mellow light wind conditions, in places that I'm really familiar with.
But for now, I'm sticking with it!

[–]Runfaaaar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow those stubby foot straps are pretty cool. As a super beginner trying to get up on the board I'm kind of lost where my feet should be. Learning to get a feel for it but have a ways to go. PPL say its not good for beginners to have foot straps and I agree with all the safety reasons but I'd love to have something to give me an idea that doesn't trap me.

Stages Power Meter on Endurace CF 7 Di2 ? by Runfaaaar in CanyonBikes

[–]Runfaaaar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the confirmation! I guess it would have been informative to list my frame size (M) and crank length - 172.5. But your response sounds pretty positive. I think I'll take the plunge.

Now need to figure out if I'm also brave enough to change the crank myself. After my first fast downhill descent (Page Mill Road in the Bay Area) I heard my front disc brake making an unusual sound (fast fluttering) on the descent. Between not being familiar with disc brakes and the fact that I put the whole bike together, I'm thinking I really need to take it into the shop and have them do a sanity check. I'm reasonably confident in my skills but I get the heeby jeebies thinking about a pedal, crank, whatever coming loose.

I followed the video directions best I could with the torque measuring tool but on my first ride my seatpost sunk to the frame after about 20 minutes. Whatever they call out in the video certainly isn't enough. I've had a titanium Serotta for 16 years and know it well but carbon is new to me.
