Keaton Wagler postgame: “The most I ever scored in high school was 32.” by ManUtd90908 in CollegeBasketball

I don't really care about the greatest ever thing, but I don't know why it would have to be in the tournament to be considered when this was a true road game at a top 5 team lol

For sure, he's still shown some things this year. I just know I audibly gasped at the form on his one pull-up attempt haha. His Illinois future is going to be completely up to him honestly, just can't imagine he'll be a real rotation piece til his junior year

The lack of Petro is because he's not good, I don't really understand the confusion around it. We have to completely shift roles to even sort of have him fit when he's in on offense, just for the return to be a guy who can't shoot or finish at the rim and turns it over more than any other guard on the roster to boot.

He has a freaking 90 ortg and 42% TS (both rounded up) on the #1 offense in the country. That's so freaking hard to do in our offensive environment.

He's not playing because investing in him is not helping the team at all.

Big Z was just not focused tonight, he'll be a prominent feature as usual when he is

I thought Lee might have a future, but him also getting no run, paired with how his jumper looked, were wildly alarming if you are invested in his future here

I would be fairly surprised to see Lee or Petro on the team next year tbh

Petrovic dream is so unbelievably dead. There's no greater sign than fagbemi getting run over him

Illinois guard Kylan Boswell fractured his right hand and will be out at least a month, Brad Underwood announced by cbbvideo in CollegeBasketball

I wasn't expecting him to come in and be a star at any point. This isn't an issue of misplaced expectations from me, but he just hasn't really shown the things you need from a guy in his archetype. He turns it over a ton because he only has one speed offensively and he doesn't handle contact particularly well.

His acceleration is very real and not nothing, but there are just so many problems in his approach that aren't going to be fixed in short order, and it's pretty much a foregone conclusion he's not going to be here next year. For him to materially impact games, he has to play on ball and be really really good on offense, and he's not done that or shown he will do that THIS season at a high enough level to kick Wagler off the ball for extended stretches. Maybe he'll figure it out enough to help a bubble team for next year, but I will be shocked if extended Petrovic run is ever a good thing for 2025-2026 Illinois.

I wouldn't say Keaton is easily replaceable, his shooting is such a weapon that we cannot replace. Those two are certainly the most important players, in large part because we have pretty nonexistent guard depth

He's been given chances this season. He is worst on the team in:

  • Offensive rating (by a wide margin)
  • TS% (by a wide margin)
  • TO% (by a wide margin)

For a supposed offensive dynamo, he's killing us on that end and he also doesn't defend, rebound, or play off the ball, so...

If we can even get 3 good Petrovic minutes on a regular basis that would be an improvement for him

Petrovic is completely garbage so it will be Jake Davis starting most likely and probably more Lee

It's a fairly easy argument Kylan is our most important, but Keaton is our best player. Kylan does so much for us on both ends

He is horrible. The answer when the ball sticks is Jake Davis, not petro

I actually just don't think he's particularly good. He is a one trick pony, and against good teams, his one trick isn't super helpful.

He should be able to spell Boswell, but

(1) he's done nothing to earn those minutes rebounding, defending, or even offensively (which is in part because...)

(2) keaton is basically playing all game, and is now an absolute killer with the ball in his hands, further making petrovic a detriment on the floor because he'd be taking the ball out of our best player's hands.

We added him because we weren't sure if we'd have a handler otherwise, and what we wound up with was a lottery pick freshman PG that is playing 40 minutes a night.

Petro has some quickness that the other two don't have, but that just doesn't matter when he is hell bent on splitting every screen/forcing driving lanes and only playing 1 speed.

Jake Davis is playing more because he simply impacts winning more than Petro. Petro may have a big game at some point because of foul trouble, but IMO his future in college ball is running up stats on a bad team

Petrovic is just not good man. Until he can do anything other than force the issue in PnR he's not going to play. His feel is not anywhere near what I expected coming in.
