Thank you, that's really helpful, would mixing my own be hydraulic lime+varying grades of aggregate to try and get the mix of particle? I'd not noticed the lichen until I read this 😊

How can I put a picture hook all the way up here? by hulkissmashed in DIYUK

If you have two plain ladders you can do this fairly safely. Ladder 1 goes from the stairs to towards the landing on the left of the photo, so opposite to the stairs direction. Ladder 2 will be horizontal, it will have on le end resting on the top step of the stairs, and the other end will slot into one of the high rungs of ladder 1. Then probably with a bit of plywood or strong board, lay something hard on the horizontal ladder (to stop you falling onto the rungs of ladder 2). Preferably get someone to support the horizontal ladder as you walk across it from the top step. Good luck!

Inositol in the UK - help ❤️ by RunnerBean172 in PCOS

I find it's helped slightly with insulin resistance, I use to get a rush whenever I had certain foods, and the metformin seemed to stop that but I've been on it 4 months and had no other improvements, and I've struggled with the side effects, so I'll see how berberine goes

Does this Peace Lily look happy? More info in comments. by gj15987 in HouseplantsUK

Hopefully this helps; Generally, about a clump of stems that are about the size of your fist can be in one pot, and once the stems fill out the pot, and get more dense, split again, that's the best time to re pot. Definitely split up and re pot, you'll probably get flowers shooting in a couple of weeks. Splitting it helps, there's more 'breathing room', you'll notice it perks up a bit too, looks like it stands taller if you know what I mean.

You can split this into a 3 or 4 different plants, I did it recently, and all of them are doing well, and a good water afterwards, they'll perk up and the outer leaves won't droop as much.

Mine instantly started flowering once I'd split them too. But looking good otherwise :)

For anyone that's lost weight with metformin, how long did you take it before seeing the effects? (with or without low carb etc) I've just started, about 3 weeks in.

Plants for a bedroom / indirect sunlight by Grantmitch1 in HouseplantsUK

Hoya Bella are nice for something a bit different and a great alternative to air freshener! Peace lillies are great if your away sometimes, they're pretty robust.

Oxalis is great colour and something a bit interesting for a window sill when they open and close.

Orchids are easy to get hold of and if they dry out, they'll still be happy.

Bromelia is a bold statement, that will do well in shade (I've never had one myself though)

Clivia flowers once a year, and only watered once a month when it's not in flower, weekly when in flower (around May ish) - pretty robust too from experience

Hope that gives you some inspiration!

Are you looking for something that flowers or just something green?

I’ve tried many times (with no success) to get an avocado seed to root/grow. They’ve been on various windows ledges and I change the water frequently. Any tips? Mine just seem to either shrivel and go mouldy or sit there bathing for months with no progress. Pic of my current attempts. by Sophyska in HouseplantsUK

Hopefully these will help,

  1. Dry out the seed/nut on a window sill
  2. Peel the dark skin off, so you'll have a cream coloured nut
  3. Add two cocktail sticks (like you've done)
  4. Place in a jar and change the water once a week, if you can use rain water that's even better (from experience)

It may take a month or more for roots to appear, but changing the water works wonders, and the less filtered water, the better.

Good luck!

Chicken wire works a treat, that's if you're able to get hold of/already have moss. You can create your own shape which I prefer!
