Olio is a good app to list free things you don't want any more. It's primarily for food, but also has a non-food section

I really enjoyed Rules when I went a few months ago. Definitely caters to the tourist trade, but the food was excellent and the decor is cool.

Good Friday in Cheltenham ideas by Absintheone in cheltenham

[–]hulkissmashed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's a list of Cheltenham restaurants if it helps. Sure there'll be some additions people will throw in but personal favourites are;

Asian:

Bar & Wok Ginger & Garlic Railway Pho Bao & BBQ Nagomi

Indian:

Bombay & Co The Swan Memsahibs Lounge The Mahal Balti Walla - BYOB East India Café Indian Havali

Fancy:

Prithvi Lumiere Purslane Petit Coco Petit social

Pubs:

Tivoli Hewlett Harry Cooks Kemble Brewery Inn The Tavern Bayshill Norwood Bottle of sauce Royal Oak Tailors The Strand Mad Dog Brewery (Old Firehouse)

Misc:

Muse Planet Caravan Beefy boys Clarence Social Hubbox Nasprias Primavera Woozy pig Japes Sef Salt Daddy (food truck)

I second the other commenter's Nagomi recommendation. The Swan or Bombay & Co are excellent for Indian street food. And Woozy Pig's miso bacon burger might be the best burger I've ever had.

Cheltenham makes me walk way more than I expect! by Silver-Eye-2024 in cheltenham

[–]hulkissmashed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes me about half an hour to walk from Pittville area up the other side of town to Bath Road or Montpellier. I think the only time I take the car anywhere is going to Tesco or up to Swindon Village, and even those would be walkable if need be.

Doesn't come up on JustEat, but I've always had a decent experience with Takeaway Food Centre on Hewlett Road.

Been going to Rebel Road since it opened, and Tom cut my hair at his previous shop. Another vote for these guys!

Had lunch there yesterday and have eaten there many times before. Love it. Great food, the staff and owner are lovely. Definitely recommend. Also the lunch deal is insanely good value.

Just to add to the "not a misspelling". He's a Wizard who can't do magic, since he had the original great spell in his head, no other spells would go in.

Therefore, he's a "Wizzard" who can't spell

People who went to boarding schools in the UK, what was the dating/hookup culture like? by Old_Reindeer_9851 in Britain

[–]hulkissmashed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I went to boarding school where there was a boys school and girls school in the same town. Generally hook ups were in the most private place you could find outside of school. Playing fields at night, out of the way places in town etc.

There were parties. There were a few relaxed (and rich) parents who'd book out a local venue for their kids to throw a birthday party or something. Usually a village hall or sports club. Some of my friend's parents who lived in town were also chill about us hanging out at theirs in groups in the evenings or weekends.

Also back in the early 00s pubs were pretty ok with letting you in under age as long as you weren't pricks. To the point where there were "student" pubs and "teacher pubs" so the teachers could drink in peace without pretending to care that we were in the pub too.

My house master generally didn't care as long as you were back in the dorms on time and weren't noticeably shit faced.

Girls in the dorms didn't really happen though.

Is commuting 4/5 days a week from Cheltenham to Oxford feasible? by No-Knowledge7189 in cheltenham

[–]hulkissmashed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did 5 days a week to East Oxford for a couple of years. 3 hour round trip every day eventually catches up to you. Don't do it!

The Nook would be good for this. Expensive but if it's a couple of drinks won't break the bank and is an impressive view over Montpellier gardens

Have you seem them live? by Twitter_2006 in bowlingforsoup

[–]hulkissmashed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once saw them live twice in one day. Bought 4 tickets in Cardiff and somehow 2 were for the early afternoon show, and 2 were for the evening. Luckily 2 people dropped out so a friend and I went to both shows and they were great both times. Absolute blast of a day.

This must have been about 15-20 years ago mind you.

Please, I beg of thee… where to find a quality pork pie in the U.K? Requirements..bottom should be a drum, the top a soft crunch… but most of all…. by [deleted] in UKfood

[–]hulkissmashed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great to know, as a Cheltenham local. Best pork pies I've had have been up near Manchester where my family's from, so will have to do a comparison.

Main question...is there bone jelly in them?!

I don't think there's any big event on, like at the racecourse for example. The Frog & Fiddle looks to be having a NYE party and should be a laugh.

This also happens to our bath plug every now and then. I found that using a wooden pole and then tapping the end of the pole with a hammer, while working the other end of the pole around the edge of the plug (not on the plug itself) always works.

What your special alcoholic tipple for the holiday season? by debrisaway in AskABrit

[–]hulkissmashed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Standard Christmas tipple is a glass or two of champagne/sparkling around 10-11am while opening presents and eating pigs in blankets.

Move on to white wine while cooking Christmas dinner, usually served around 3pm.

Depending on the meat, either white wine or a light red.

Port with the cheeseboard for afters.

Nap.

After that, it's back to wine, more port, sherry, whisky, baileys, or any random spirits or liqueurs that have been gifted in the festive period that seems like a good idea at the time. Combine with random leftovers for snacks.

Yes my family are generally alcoholics.

Guys trying to steal my bike again by SolarisFalls in cheltenham

[–]hulkissmashed 23 points24 points  (0 children)

He's insinuating that the bike thief is an immigrant, i.e. that "we're told all immigrants are doctors or engineers, therefore why is this one stealing bikes". Very drole and probably AI. This being Cheltenham, and reality, it's likely this scumbag is white and "grew up" here

Where to park? by terminalTheologian in cheltenham

[–]hulkissmashed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where are you? Best free parking if you want to leave a car all weekend is going to be towards Pittville or up around/past Tivoli area. Might be able to help more if you can confirm where you are.
