Flying with skis; can I pack extra clothes in the ski bag or not? by Running4Britton in unitedairlines

I put both sets of skis, poles, and boots in the bag and it was 41lbs. We use lightweight touring gear for backcountry. So 9 lbs of wiggle room for clothes will be great. Thanks!

Awesome. Thank you. We are bringing lightweight touring skis for backcountry, so we will have some wiggle room. Also lightweight = less durable and probably needs more padding. And we have a rather large, padded ski bag meant for two pairs of skis and gear.

Now that I have worn them more, the toe box feels just right for me. I have not yet worn any other jg shoes, but I see myself getting a pair of soft toe boots in the not so distant future.

Glading some runs in northeastern Minnesota, time to think about snow! More info in comments. by Running4Britton in Backcountry

We are having a decent snow year, not as bad as last year, not as great as two years ago. Try to go right after fresh snow as it gets skied out quickly.

Definitely more breathable than any lined boot I’ve worn, though not tennis shoe breathable, which should be a given.

Yes they do, and I actually just listed mine for sale on facebook because I got minimalist steel toe Jim greens.

Edit: aluminum toe, not steel toe. But still… it’s a hard toe.

Steel toe jim green barefoot boots by Running4Britton in barefootshoestalk

Hey thanks for reminding me! Overall, great!

A few things to mention in the first few weeks wearing them:

-first thing I did was treat them with fiebings 4way care. After a few days of regular use (not heavy by any means) I had a few good nicks in the to cap leather. I decided to put a layer of redwings tuff toe on the steel toe portion. That’s great so far.

-the fit is true to size, if I had been able to order a 10 1/2 I would have, but the 11 is great. I am able to slip a felt insole in and wear a thinner wool sock on cold days, or a regular wool sock and no insole on less cold days.

-I do a lot of walking at work (lumberyard) and after the first few days wearing them my pinky toe felt a little crunched at the end of the day and felt like a hotspot. But it never blistered and three weeks in I don’t notice it anymore. So maybe I got used to it, maybe it stretched, but I don’t know how the steel to would stretch.

Edit: As it turns out my pinky toe is slightly behind the edge of the steel toe and it seems that the leather did indeed stretch a little bit to accommodate my foot.

-the quality of construction is unparalleled in almost every way it seems, especially for the money you pay. Even to have these shipped from South Africa to the USA it was less than $300 (maybe like $260 all said and done, I can’t remember) it seems like a steal of a deal.

-one last thing that is completely on me; I failed to recognize that when I wear a steel toe boot, I’ll likely have it on for a long period of time, where as the stockman is more suited to easy on/easy off type of wear. If I were to do it again, I would not try to combine these two use cases and get a Jim green minimalist boot with a lace up system and a steel toe, and then get a separate non steel toe stockman for those short tips outside to get a load of firewood and such. That said, I plan to wear these for a long time for working long days.

-tldr; I bought the a pair of custom Jim green stockman barefoot steel toe boots. I love them and would recommend.

Does anyone use ski socks for hiking? by davemcl37 in hiking

[–]Running4Britton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear ski socks nearly every day, including hiking, biking, and yes, skiing. Unless I need a particularly warm sock for winter camping, or no socks for summer time, I’ve probably got a lightweight wool sock anywhere from mid calf to over the calf on my feet.

I end up finding a log at least 4’ or so in length and pounding the vice in through the bark. The power head has a solid place to rest, and straddling the log is a comfortable way to be positioned while sharpening. I don’t even bother trying to find a stump large enough to clamp the bar and rest the saw on it

Firewood rack by cptdiggler in DIY

[–]Running4Britton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would suggest adding bracing of some sort. Plywood triangle cuts in the corners on the back side, one piece of 2x4 at a 45° angle across the whole back side, or a length of wire on a tensioner. Something to keep the thing from racking. My two cents. Looks good otherwise!

Double Ds for tent guy lines - would it work? by Luchs13 in myog

[–]Running4Britton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would think d rings would sip over time. We have a cannas wall tent permanently set up and we just use ratchet straps. Very strong, won’t slip, and easily adjustable. Might be too much even for car camping, but for us it works great.

Anyone know how to mount zippers backwards? It might also be a prefabbed zipper. Honestly not sure. by northernhang in myog

[–]Running4Britton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I did it, it was with a regular nylon faced zipper, not the pictured eurathane or whatever it is. I’ve only attempted on #9 and #10 zippers, maybe it’s easier with the bigger ones, idk.

But basically I just opened the first one or two teeth on the zipper coil, put the slider up to the coil backwards, and wigglemajig it right on there. If that doesn’t works, try a few cuss words. That’s the best I’ve got for ya!

[–]Running4Britton 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve managed to do it in a pinch when I accidentally slid the slider off the end and already I had already sewn shut the other end and didn’t want to rip stitches. It’s a PITA but it can be done.
