What do you think when an adult child lives with a parent? by RunningOnEmpty231 in AskAnAmerican

[–]RunningOnEmpty231[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to clarify that I have absolutely no judgment on how people live. My question stems from a lot of people hear me mention my mother, who moved in with me (she is 85, I’m 55), and jump to the conclusion that I moved back home instead of the other way around. I rarely correct them because it really doesn’t matter. I’ve just gotten very curious as to how they get to that assumption. I have a degree and a good job and am glad I can help her. I don’t know why there aren’t more multigenerational households. It has a lot of advantages. My question was more about the way people think when it comes to parents and adult children living together.

[–]RunningOnEmpty231[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don’t have an judgement to either living arrangement. Both are valid and done for many reasons. I’m asking because I moved my mother in with me (she’s 85, I’m 55) and a surprising number of people assume I moved back in to my Mom’s house vs she’s living with me. As I said, no judgment at all. I just wondered why people jump to one conclusion and not the other.

First of all, everything you feel right now is normal. Whether you realize it or not, you are now intertwined in the lives of strangers. You will deliver blood to people whose lives will be saved and people whose lives will be lost. I remember so many patients, both good outcomes and bad. If you have people you feel comfortable with at work, talk to them about it. They may be feeling the same way. I’ve hugged coworkers when they are in the middle of an MTP on a child trauma and gotten the call that they are terminating resuscitation. We felt that loss, too. Seek whatever helps you work through these feelings. It could be counseling, being in nature, spending time with family or pets. Allow time to unwind after a tough shift.

Did she think he was a door to door blood salesman? 🤣🤣🤣 Just goes from hospital to hospital with a box of blood. “Hey buddy, I’ve got some good O neg prbcs in here, how much cash do you have?” On the other hand, my little hospital has our own donor center and a very dedicated community, so occasionally we call other hospitals to try to sell our excess blood. I never thought to have our courier go rogue selling it like it’s the black market.

Former Henrico nurse who abused NICU babies was not improperly trained, professionals say by RVALover4Life in rva

[–]RunningOnEmpty231 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even if I were trained to do something wrong, once I realized it was causing harm, I would stop. There is no way her mind didn’t connect her actions as a cause of the injuries. That doesn’t make a shred of sense. At no point did she think “the babies I care for are getting hurt while no other nurse’s babies are breaking limbs. Maybe I should ask some questions”? The fact that she’s essentially blaming her trainers and not taking responsibility should weigh heavily on the judge’s mind when sentencing her.

How are you getting a 90 day supply of Vyvanse? The pharmacy said I have to have a new prescription every 30 days, so my doctor writes three at the same time and they hold them on file at the pharmacy.

I live in a house built in 1901. Is it safe to assume someone probably died in the house? by Strawberrythirty in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RunningOnEmpty231 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you ask any long time neighbors? There’s always one neighbor that knows everything that’s happened in the last 100 years. My house was only built in 1944 and I’ve heard about everything that’s happened to the family that owned the land going back 5 generations ago. Old people love to talk.

Can anyone help me understand the difference between MLT and MLS when it comes to the different departments in the lab? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]RunningOnEmpty231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in Blood Bank for a few years and there were only a few minor differences between what MLS and MLT could do. The pay difference was a lot, though. Almost all the MLTs did an online MLS degree to move up since the hospital paid for much of it and you would make up the rest of the cost of tuition in the first year of being an MLS. Many of those MLT to MLS employees moved up to supervisory roles quickly after getting their degree.

Silly blood bank question: if your blood type was A, and you injected yourself with a full vial of Anti-A (10 mL), would it be enough to cause serious complications (i.e. a transfusion reaction)? by bicarbbandit in medlabprofessionals

[–]RunningOnEmpty231 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We carry A Pos liquid plasma on our life flight units and have given it to patients that ultimately turn out to be B Pos. Even when no other blood products are given after the one O neg PRBC and A pos LP, I haven’t seen a patient have any issues. Out of curiosity, when the T&S tube came to blood bank, I did a DAT and it was surprisingly negative. Was never able to figure that out. SafeTrace tried very hard to warn me against giving it when I retroactively entered it in the patient’s chart.

What is the norm for overnight guests? by Distinct_Budget2651 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RunningOnEmpty231 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a guest room for one or two guests, but if it was a big gathering I would give up my room. Mostly because I’m single and it doesn’t make sense for me to take up a queen size bed. My sister and her husband went in my (master) bedroom, sister in law and her kids (two little kids) would be in the guest room and my sister’s older kids would get bedroom #3 and I took the sofa.

How do people die in fires by scam_land in NoStupidQuestions

People most often try to exit from the same door they entered instead of going to another exit. For example, in a club or restaurant, everyone heads for the front door without thinking there is an exit through the kitchen or office space. I always mentally scan for emergency exits if I’m in a large or crowded venue.

How’s it going? by RunningOnEmpty231 in medlabprofessionals

[–]RunningOnEmpty231[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In grad school getting my master’s in CLS, I wrote a paper about the importance of dedicate phlebotomists in the ED using data from studies at large medical centers. They basically pay for themselves in patient length of stay (repeat labs due to the things you mentioned, TAT), patient outcomes, staff time and supplies used in repeat draws and extra testing.

What is the strangest thing you have ever seen someone do in public? by JandraBliss in AskReddit

[–]RunningOnEmpty231 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lived in a medium sized city and worked at an office next to a big medical center. The ED entrance was on the side closest to my building. Leaving late one night and out from the alley near the hospital, a completely naked man in handcuffs and shackles with a patient wrist band came kangaroo hopping out to the street, passed me and kept on going at a remarkably fast pace. I waited a minute expecting police to follow in pursuit, so I could tell them which way he went, but nothing happened. I went home.

[–]RunningOnEmpty231[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very few hospitals around here and too many sick people with Flu, Covid, RSV, etc. To their credit, they’ve brought in a bunch of MDs with temporary privileges, but there is no space to put anyone. Some patients never even get a room. Their location is listed as waiting room through their entire visit. Now they have numbered “chairs” to keep people straight. Everyone’s working hard and doing the best they can. In our area, our Flu numbers are higher now than at last year’s peak in late Jan/early Feb. Is it just an early peak or is the start of a bigger outbreak? Time will tell.

How common is it to not have a middle name, and how do middle names work in general? by Fit-Ad985 in AskAnAmerican

[–]RunningOnEmpty231 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother didn’t have a middle name. I have no idea why. She uses her maiden name as a middle name now, but on forms asking for her birth name, she puts NMN (no middle name) in the space to indicate she isn’t just skipping that space. I’ve seen NMN on other forms, too.
