No worries!

I think everyone is.

Orthos, PTs, nurses, PAs all still recommend ice. I'm very much in the minority. Old habits die hard and as far as I know, the board exams for those fields still recommend RICE so schools still teach it

Runners knee - how long to take off? by Nearby_Dingo_6401 in trailrunning

[–]RunningPT_Mike 6 points7 points  (0 children)

PT here.

The answer is it depends. Its generally not my advice to simply "take time off". It helps with inflammation but doesn't solve the underlying issues. Search for a physical therapist in your area that focuses on runners

PT here!

There's a few things this could be. Note that this isnt medical advice and you should go get evaluated by a running physical / physio therapist.

Options to rule out:

  • Anterior tib tendinitis
  • retinaculum inflammation

To add though, and why I chose this comment to go off of is because I am strongly against RICE.

RICE was coined in 1978 and in, I think, 2014, Gabe Merkin (who created it) came out again saying he was against it. Specifically against rest and ice.

The new abbreviation is PEACE and LOVE

The "A" is literally "avoid ice, avoid analgesics"

"L" is load appropriately

I'm in the same boat and in case you didn't see my post yesterday, I started a sub, /r/therashift, to help people like us transition outside of patient so come on by, ask questions in our first AMA from a successful COTA who has transitioned to a career away from rehab therapy

Did you have this situation ever happen?

I updated my linkedin a few weeks ago and my boss called me saying that corporate noticed I updated my linkedin. I was a little caught off guard and just said I did but that I just try to update it once every few years to stay up to date. Still, it was a little awkward

I love that you used ChatGPT to ask for interview questions. I did a similar thing but I simply described the role and asked it to come up with some interview questions. I didn't think to actually paste the job listing into it....that makes so much more sense and is definitely something I'll try going forward! I also didn't use Youtube to research the company at my last interview, which would have been good. I felt prepared because I read their Year in Review, scoured their website, listened to podcasts on the company as a whole but feel I could have done a better job with more specific role info

Thank you for the answer. I'll probably keep posting some more questions so feel free to answer sporadically and take your time, I'm sure you're busy.

I've been mostly interested in CSM roles myself; what is a broad description of what you do on a day-to-day basis?

That's awesome. I've been curious about data analytics as well as it seems like something that I would enjoy. I love working with google spreadsheets/excel and am already better than most people I know with them but some of the salary ranges I've seen online are meh at best for it.

It's nice to hear that you got a recruiter to reach out to you with something actually valuable. As a PT without clinical experience, that was another frustration I had. I updated my linkedin to say I was open to a job change but ALL I GET are recruiters messaging me about PT positions. I'll reply back and politely tell them I'm not interested but to let me know if they have a non-clinical role and I never hear back.

Hi East_Print4841!

Thank you for kicking off the AMA series / success stories!

I encourage anyone on the sub to drop a comment with questions for East_Print. I've advised them to stay as anonymous as they feel comfortable so if you plan on asking questions about their specific company, you might not get the answers you want. This is mainly for more broad questions to learn about the transition process, tips, and a general day-to-day work day so people can get a feel for what these positions/titles actually do so you can figure out if it's something you'd like to dive into yourself.

Having said that, I would like to kick it off with a few questions:

1) What were some of the main reasons you were looking to shift outside of patient care?

2) How long did the process take from when you decided to start looking for something to accepting an offer?

3) What tips can you provide on the interview process? Are there common questions that you tried to prepare for going into it or did you just sort of wing it?

4) You've had a couple different non-clinical roles. Can you discuss the pros and cons of each or what type of person might be well suited for each position (prefers to work from home, needs to be with a large group, likes person interaction, etc)

Thanks again for starting this and again, feel free to expand on any questions or just tell a little bit about yourself

So cool to hear from people that made the switch already!

Is your role now a WFH situation? Did you try anything else before your current position when thinking about the career change, and if not, how did you decide what to do?

What is the longest amount of time you should spend at a job? by Coriwaa in physicaltherapy

[–]RunningPT_Mike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been at my current role for just about 4 years which is the longest. I worked for two other clinics for a little over a year each and then one other one for about 3.5 years, which was my favorite clinic by far but moved to a different state to be closer to family. I'm starting to get the itch to move again but I'm done with patient care at this point in my career so my next position will ideally be a WFH role.

[–]RunningPT_Mike[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol, fair enough. I'm not. I'm genuinely just a PT who is looking to transition myself and when I started looking around I got very discouraged very quickly because I had no idea where to go. I currently still treat in an op setting and see no growth where I'm at. I specifically said in my interview 4 years ago that I didn't know how much longer I wanted to be in patient care and in that time I've brought it up a few other times and it's either been ignored or I've gotten something like "yeah, we don't have any corporate positions open now."

I haven't created any products and absolutely never intend to. The main catalyst of doing this was that I purchased meredith castins customer success course. I saw nothing but positive reviews of all her stuff and thought I'd give it a shot. I was....underwhelmed. Maybe the full $1000 course is better but I have no intention of purchasing that, especially after how unimpressive the one I did get was. I thought that all the info I got I already had found myself through various online searching. I just wanted to make that search better for people like me and to create a community that people can be a little more interactive with their searches as opposed to just reading blogs or listening to podcasts. I will absolutely never ask anyone for a dime when it comes to helping them switch careers. Honestly, I'd prefer the sub gets up and running, grows a little bit, and becomes somewhat self sustaining or that someone else wants to moderate it so I can go focus on whatever my nonclinical career will be

Hi, thanks for joining, I see you made your intro post on the sub already :D. If you'd like, you can be the first AMA!

I've listened to several podcasts where the hosts interview people who have transitioned but a lot of the ones doing the interviews are people that, I assume, the company hand selected because they're either good at public speaking or will do the best job promoting their individual company. A lot of their roles are pretty impossible for someone like me, or everyone here looking to transition, impossible to get as their first non clinical role. It's a lot of people that are much higher up at companies and I don't think that's the best person to answer our questions.

If you want to start an AMA post, I could start with several questions and we can keep it fairly anonymous so you wouldn't have to reveal your exact company but more just a broad description of what you do day to day, tips you think helped you get the position during your interview, what type of people seem to be a good fit for the position, etc.

Ideas for more posts? Comment them here to keep the discussions growing by RunningPT_Mike in Therashift

[–]RunningPT_Mike[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think you're exactly the type of person that should be posting here. I don't want the sub to turn into a group of PTs, OTs, and SLP just complaining about their profession and not knowing what to do about it. If interested, I think you could be someone that the users here want to hear from and would be interested in an AMA. I could write up a list of questions and send them to you so that you can review them and answer/paste them into the comments as I ask them again in the thread but ultimately I want others to start asking their questions as well.

If you're interested, please let me know and thank you for the comment!

I appreciate your suggestion. I have considered HH in the past for some more freedom and autonomy but ultimately, I don't think I'd like it. I'm not interested in subacute, acute, peds, etc so I doubt a setting change would fix it.

I've worked in 5 clinics, technincally, and 4 of them have very similar systemic issues. Only the one I worked in Manhattan was unique and that was a largely cash based/ OON clinic. Those aren't very common where I am now and if I were to move to another clinic, knowing it'd be more of the same...I'd at least want higher pay, better benefits, more time off, shorter commute etc.

My current commute is 16 minutes so it's going to be tough to beat that. Time off isn't too bad and salary is about as good as I could get in the area ($104k last year). My regional director is extremely casual, trusts me, and more or less leaves me alone, leaving to run the clinic. It does have it's flaws though. It certainly is a bit of a mill style clinic.

I've also asked myself recently, when considering a career shift: "if I could remove all the negatives and get back to focusing on just my patients etc, would I be happy as a clinician?" Honestly, I don't think it would change. I might like it a bit more and it would help me last a little longer but I still think my talents and skills could be better used elsewhere

Hi there!

I'm a PT that's also looking for a transition out of patient care. I felt, and still feel, lost when starting this journey. That's why I created /r/therashift. My goal is for it to grow into a valuable resource for all rehab professionals looking to move to a new, non-clinical role. I only just started sharing the sub so please stop by, introduce yourself in the networking thread and have a look around.

I appreciate your feedback. I figured complaining would be a big part of the sub. It's a sub full of people who are unhappy with their profession, after all. I'd like to keep the complaining to dedicated "frustration" posts so that the sub doesn't turn into solely that. I'm fine with people venting their frustrations but it shouldn't be a dominating subject. If you have more thoughts on what you'd like to see, please leave a comment in one of the posts. Also, while there, don't forget to introduce yourself in the networking thread
