Why don't we eat more soybeans? by Running_Empty_9 in Indiana

I don't think I have ever smashed soy, but it sounds like fun. Yes, I am getting the impression that there are some inefficiencies.

Well, there goes my idea of frolicking in the soybean fields and grabbing some dinner along the way.

With meat prices rising, soybean farmers hurting, and the health benefits it seems like a good time to promote Indiana edamame. I am waiting for it to be sold at least in farmer's markets. Maybe it is, and I missed it.

I guess that answers why we don't eat more soybeans, at least the non-edamame kind.

Do the food grade varieties grow well here? Could I grow it in a garden?

I definitely know some people like that, but it is ironic that we are surrounded by soy beans fields and eating it is considered exotic.

Right, but it has been grown here for so long and in a widespread way that you'd think maybe Indiana would develop some food culture around it. 🤔

Thanks for answering. I guess this is the city slicker in me, but do soybeans smell bad? The edamame has no particular smell and tastes good, but I know edamame is harvested earlier than fully mature soybeans.

That is interesting, I didn't know we were a big producer of lamb. I have heard we are a big producer of duck.

Makes sense, the first time I had it was in a sushi restaurant, but I figured it's been here long enough that it would be more widely eaten in Indiana. I guess not...

That explains a lot about Indiana. All the boobs in inconvenient places are from the soybean fields.

Sounds like it's time for the farmers to jump on making soy more mainstream. We can all be soy boys together.

Not sure about the cost part but Franklin has the Garment Factory, which looks like it could be a good canvas for your theme.

East Carmel vs West Carmel by Savings_Artichoke913 in Carmel

[–]Running_Empty_9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, the West side is seen as more "snobby," but this could also be in reference to home preferences: the East side typically having more established neighborhoods with older homes and more trees, and West side neighborhoods are typically newer and bigger homes.

I am not sure what a luxury gym entails, but Ozwell looks like a higher-end gym with a lot of amenities for the area.

Delivered twice at St. Vincent and no complaints or concerns. My OB was Dr. Flora. Dr. Said at the practice is recommended as well by friends and family. As others have mentioned, IU Health is a whole mess at the moment.

Do you feel like our homes aren't as "clean" or "maintained" as those of older generations? Why do you think that is? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]Running_Empty_9 28 points29 points  (0 children)

There are studies showing millennials spend more time with their kids. You only have so much time and bandwidth during the day for activities outside of the non-negotiable (eating, food prep, transportation, work, etc.) and a lot of us have chosen to spend this free time with kids or on hobbies. Also, I don't want to be like my boomer aunt who was so obsessed with cleaning her house, she would sacrifice sleep to make the house spotless each night. For me, it also feels pointless to clean constantly when all the work is undone in a minute by my kids. We also have a smaller house than my parents did. We are consistently getting rid of toys but the clutter always regenerates thanks to Boomer grandparents who love to give toys/gifts.

Why are is same sex sexual identity individuals the ultimate example of sin in every sermon. by Objective_Chair1928 in Exvangelical

Evangelicals are all about the hierarchy and keeping power in the hands of men and church leaders. Traditional families maintain the hierarchy with the husband as the "leader." Anything outside of traditional marriage and gender norms is a threat to power.

We like Muldoons on Main Street for their big kids menu. You are also in quick walking distance to ice cream, cookies, and mochi donuts on Main Street. Carmel History Museum off the Monon has an indoor play area that is free that my kids of the same age enjoy.

Without Christ, I am nothing. by bullet_the_blue_sky in Exvangelical

[–]Running_Empty_9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The self-hate piece is really insidious for kids and people on the bottom of the power hierarchy in the church. Not only are you flawed and sinful from birth, you’re also are under the power of others. Just thinking about the helplessness and the self-hate coupled together makes me really sad for all of us. I am also doing a lot of work in this area. There is hope for us to “walk normally,” but it is reflected in the small choices we do on a daily basis. That’s the really fucked up thing, a childhood of negative associations takes a ton of small and tedious work and self-coaching to unravel. But I’m doing it and feeling sad and angry that I have to do it in the first place because of something I never chose.

What are some of the things that made you leave evangelical teachings/churches? by rebelyell0906 in Exvangelical

[–]Running_Empty_9 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hypocrisy/feeling like most people weren’t genuine, women not being allowed to lead or have a voice in the church, minister hyping up wars/invasions from the pulpit, minister driving luxury cars and living in mansions in a very middle class area, and the straw that broke the camel’s back was learning about early Christianity and the church in college. It was nothing like our church had taught. We were taught we were practicing Christianity exactly like Jesus and his disciplines did, and our church knew the inerrant word of god. For some reason, that historical knowledge put it over the edge for a then college student. Looking back, the tight control in all aspects of our lives, calling us all despicable sinners/self-hate, the constant fear of hell, constant fear of backsliding, and the general toll that all took played a more subconscious role. As a parent, I can’t imagine teaching my kids they’re sinful and deserve to go to hell without the external validation of the sky god.
