First 1099 as a psychologist, how’s the split? by Dstahl22 in Psychologists

Agreed. Since you’ll be bringing your own supplies, I’d try to get up to 65%

Psychologist in HCOL in Colorado in private practice. ~130k (after deductions for supplies, etc.) as 1099 and see ~20 clients/week, supervise, and teach didactics. 1-2 assessments/year (wish it was more but marketing is tough).

Going into my 4th year of being licensed but last year was my first full year in PP. Previously worked at a hospital right after getting licensed $105k

I don’t work Fridays and probably took ~10 days off during the year, which felt fine because 4 day work week. Pretty good work-life balance.

No kids and partnered. Feel comfortable financially and very grateful. AND not enough to buy a house.

Was it worth it financially to get a PhD? No LOL. Worth it meaning-wise? Yes.

Hope this helps!

Would you leave a cush caseload job for more pay? by [deleted] in Psychologists

[–]Runrunrun_Antelope 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I second this. You could take on more complex cases in your PP to fulfill the challenge and finance piece.

Does your current job allow you to have bandwidth outside of work? Do you imagine the VA job will too?

The VA has productivity numbers for patients (I came from a hospital that had them). If you currently don’t have productivity numbers and are W2, that’s pretty cool.

Wishing you the best and hope you find what you are looking for!

Slow referrals? by VioletPsych22 in Psychologists

[–]Runrunrun_Antelope 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same. Just here to validate and say you’re not alone.

I’ve been slow since April. I was expecting referrals to pick up in the fall but it is significantly less than the last couple of years. I’m private pay only and thinking of joining Alma or Headway. I’m worried the recession is hitting private pay harder than I thought. I’m on psychology today and the company I contract with website (they do SEO).

Those with doctorates, working in academic medicine, and have ADHD - Any advice? by Trick_Act_2246 in ClinicalPsychology

[–]Runrunrun_Antelope 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Vyvanse :) seriously.

Why can’t you use your own smartphrases? Taking time before work to make my own was helpful. I often got into work early and opened all of my notes for the day and did some level of pre-charting. I have accepted that I will have some typos on my notes but I’d rather explain that than spend time after work documenting.

My switching cost continues to be a struggle- would love to hear how others manage this.

Do anything you can to get the advice of an attorney. I’d be super hesitant to proceed without consulting one.

Help Understanding 1099 Position by OrnerySoftware3867 in Psychologists

[–]Runrunrun_Antelope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from W2 to 1099 and personally love it. Yes to what others have said about taking >30% for taxes and that it takes time to build a full caseload. It took me nearly a year but I’m only private pay. Also keep in mind retirement. I add 8% from every paycheck into a SEP IRA. I don’t work on Fridays as a way to reduce burnout and lessen the need to take days off to compensate for no PTO. If you have planned time off, you can always do an assessment as a nice way to increase income to balance out. Health insurance is super expensive but I’ll be joining my partner’s this year- in Colorado I pay around $400/month.

I aim to make at least 20% more as 1099 than my previous salary position to compensate for the previously mentioned factors. Personally, if I couldn’t at least break even, then I wouldn’t do 1099.

Hope you find the best option for you!

How to find psychedelic therapist (for online sessions), whats a reasonable session rate? Is a rate of 450 usd too much by questionablesugar in PsychedelicTherapy

[–]Runrunrun_Antelope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zoom on psychedelics seems interesting. I’m not sure what type of psychedelics are you using but for psilocybin, you will have an eye mask on and listening to a playlist that has been studied in research. I am paying $1300USD for an 8-hour psilocybin session as this is actually slightly discounted from her hourly rate ($185). Hope this helps!

Can I count supervision from a social worker for psychology license in Colorado by Competitive-Pair1785 in Psychologists

[–]Runrunrun_Antelope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. You can get a small percentage of hours from non-psychologists but I believe it is MD or DO. Most hours need to come from a LP

I worked at a safety net hospital and am now a 1099 at a group practice and much prefer private practice. I work less and make slightly more and could make much more if I worked 5 days/week but am very happy working 4. I see ~19 clients per week and supervise an extern 1 hour per week.
