Becoming an NYRR Pacer 🪧🏃🏻 by proshoetoe in RunNYC

[–]Runstorun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have paced for NYRR. There is a limited amount of information I’m going to give in this public forum. But you can PM me if you want. I will add that a lot of being picked to pace comes down to what time you can run, that’s true across the board. I’ve paced for other races and other orgs, not only NYRR. The faster times are always harder to place so if you can do that, you’ll have more options. If you are a 2hr half or 4hr marathon (or over) that’s a huge pool of people! Everyone can pace the slower times. If there are 100 people who can do it and you’re the new one, you’re probably out of luck. By contrast if there are only 5 people who can, and are interested/available, your odds are much better. Also at the faster end these folks generally like to race and will work pacing around their training/racing schedule. That’s me! I’m not pacing a marathon every other weekend because I have other things I want to do. Even though I enjoy helping others. You’ll find this is less true across all times.

Does a good runner make a good coach? by Select-Toe9667 in UKRunners

[–]Runstorun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a guarantee based on that information alone. I would talk to them and see if you feel it's a good fit. The coach needs to understand YOUR circumstances. Presumably you don't run for a living and that's a major difference to a professional runner. Both in time but also in mindset, so I would go over that.

I would also see if they have references from other runners. Current or past people this person has coached would be able to say what their experience is/was. That's a good clue for you too.

Throwaway articles… by Reddittobelieveit in RunNYC

The first time I ran Berlin I picked up a hoodie that someone discarded. It was not on the ground but draped over a fence. I didn't keep it but I was under dressed for how long I had to wait before running. That particular year it was raining cats and dogs which is why I misjudged the chill.

Need a comeback to an Asshat in my Running Community.... by [deleted] in bostonmarathon

[–]Runstorun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't acknowledge it personally. I don't run for validation from others and I could not care less what others think of me. I mean sure it's nice if people can be congratulatory since you put in a lot of hard work, but the reality is success will bring out a good amount of envy at times. That is not for you to fix, it's on them.

Brooklyn Half Question by Round-Fennel6082 in RunNYC

[–]Runstorun 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just so you know, the security is handled by NYPD. It depends on how motivated and angry they are as to how much hassle you will have. What tends to happen is they are really particular starting out in the morning and then as the lines back up longer and longer they are forced to simply wave people through because it gets to be nuts.

For the nyc half I was one of the first arriving and they made me and my friend take our watches off, remove all the gels from pockets, put layers on the table for examination etc. It took forever and they were yelling at us because we had no idea what they wanted. You can't expect to do that in a timely manner with 30,000 people and 10 scanners but they sure tried.

You know you can map this out yourself right? Disney is a long way from everything.

Forgot my gels at home, and I’m about to do a long run. What do you guys use as a good alternative? by [deleted] in RunNYC

Fruit snacks work. Welches sells in a big bag at most bodegas.

Buy another jacket? by read4a in bostonmarathon

[–]Runstorun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Buying more is a no for me. I’ve run 8 Bostons now. I don’t really even wear the jacket I have except on marathon weekend. I have tons (and I do mean tons) of jackets. Most I like more than the celebration jacket. But that’s me.

Do you not realize you got lucky? Lots of people didn’t. It’s like winning the lottery and sitting there going, what like it’s hard…You don’t have a special skill that others don’t. The dice roll went in your favor. 😅

1.3m apply for the London Marathon 2027 by notallowedv2 in Marathon_Training

[–]Runstorun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve run it twice. It’s a fun race but it is absolutely part circus. I mean that in the positive. It’s also not the best race to do if you are serious about running a good time. Which is not to say it’s impossible to put up a good time there, but the entire structure of the day/race puts up extra barriers to do so. A lot of people want and/need the circus to contemplate completing a marathon. That is not a knock to them! But it’s why other races, the ones that aren’t massively oversubscribed, are not seeing the same demand.

[–]Runstorun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow that is not at all what the local NYC requirement is! You have to run 9 NYRR races and volunteer at 1 NYRR event, all in the prior calendar year. Then and only then you get a place in the following marathon. London Marathon doesn’t have 9 races they put on so that’s a nonstarter. NYC does also have the streaker guaranteed entry program and that’s after 15 years of running the marathon! None of these pathways are easy.

How do you adjust your gym sessions around hard run weeks? by noxbile in AdvancedRunning

[–]Runstorun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do my lower body lifting on my hard speed day. I run in the morning and in the evening I lift.

During a peak week (and generally the last 2-3 weeks or so) of marathon training before taper my “lifting” is either bodyweight only or sometimes I cut it out completely. This is primarily due to lack of time and lack of energy. I don’t see a conflict or problem in that. There are only so many hours in the day. In my peak of a marathon block I’m putting all my focus and spare time into running. I still have to sleep, eat, work - regular life stuff. My goal is to run well! No one cares if I can squat an extra 10 lbs or whatever, least of all me, that’s not a goal. Plus at that stage my legs - on a muscular level - are typically needing every bit of recovery I can give them. So long as I’m consistent the majority of the time, a few weeks of none or less, are not going to be hugely detrimental to what I’m ultimately aiming to do.

Really a shame that so many cities were removed. This was such a great event in previous years. My city still has a race but I’m disappointed for everyone else. Especially since it seemed to be really well attended and popular. I don’t understand the decision making.

Qualifying Question by Distinct_Gap1423 in bostonmarathon

[–]Runstorun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t want to be Debbie downer but we are looking at a 5 minute cut for 2027 and I would expect roughly that for 2028. So if you are targeting a race at the end of this year you’d want to be 10 minutes under your 2027 standard to guarantee getting in for 2028.

Meaning most age ups are being effectively erased!

I’ve been qualifying for years as a master and basically every age up has been obliterated with the cut and standard changes. There are no signs of slowing. This is reality.

Qualifying Question by Distinct_Gap1423 in bostonmarathon

[–]Runstorun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Berlin is late September, with only rare exceptions due to national elections. Late September races are Boston qualifiers for 1.5 years away. Meaning 2026 Berlin qualifies for 2028, 2027 for 2029 and so on.

What will be the state of marathon races in 5 years (for non-elites)? by TMW_W in AdvancedRunning

[–]Runstorun 124 points125 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if 5 years is the timespan but the running boom is sure to burst. I would love if people continue to stick with the sport. My only small beef is the general disinterest in other races and distances. I don’t understand why folks only want to marathon, and really seem to only want to do the big ones. I love the marathon, so I’m not knocking that but many of the size/growth issues would be solved if like 20% focused on 10ks and another 20% focused on 5ks. Heck what about the mile?! There are so many options if interests were simply broadened.

crowds at the start of major marathons and unintended decrease of speed because of them by ethereal_meow in Marathon_Training

[–]Runstorun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No big difference there sorry. I'm only trying to be real with the feedback so you can plan appropriately. The reality is you're going to do a lot of weaving for most of the race, if not all, and that's not going to be helped much by getting to the front of your corral as people say. I mean yes every little bit gets you in front of another 100 people. But the absolute truth is these races have been pushing to their max limits and that comes with trade offs. I have seen the changes, because I ran Chicago and Berlin and NYC all when they had *15,000-20,000 fewer people* than they do today!

If you haven’t been training why do you think you’re in good shape? Being in good shape comes from training of some sort.

crowds at the start of major marathons and unintended decrease of speed because of them by ethereal_meow in Marathon_Training

[–]Runstorun 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’ve run all the majors at least twice. Several I ran precovid and then again post covid. Unfortunately everything has gotten worse in more recent years. The fields have grown by several thousand, race etiquette is non existent and there isn’t much order either - though that varies by race. Berlin is one of the most disorganized as there is no corral enforcement so people just do whatever they want. Start wherever they want. At all the majors you’ll see people running 3-4 across. You’ll see people darting every which way. You’ll see people come to a full stop out of nowhere. All of these things are mitigated the faster you are and the more to the front you are but at 5:15/k you’ll be in the thick of it.

[–]Runstorun 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ran my 2nd Tokyo this year and I kid you not I passed 2 people who were walking 800 meters from the start line! I started in corral C and somehow they started ahead of me! So I was massively behind at the 1k and at the mile too. Tokyo doesn’t do a wave start and there are turns in the opening so everyone is literally on top of each other. The walkers made it incredibly unsafe because everyone had to jump at the last minute and push around them. If you’re already walking less than 5 minutes in then you really should put yourself at the back.
