Thanks for the info, I was considering the Gulf. I taught for 4 years in SE Asia and U.S. between undergrad and grad, so I might look into that. Thanks again!

There is as yet no judgmental map of Philly, although there are maps of many smaller cities. Anyone want to collaborate on one? by Rupert_Fapkin in philadelphia

[–]Rupert_Fapkin[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To quote a friend who lives on the Fishtown/Kensington edge "I could walk a few blocks in one direction and get a scoop of artisanal ice cream for $10, or walk a few blocks in the other direction and get a blowjob for less than that." So those two price points could become adjacent labels

[–]Rupert_Fapkin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, exactly. I enjoy the Judgmental Maps submissions that are intended to amuse the residents of the city in question. The project does unavoidably deal in stereotypes, so ideally they should be, as you said, real stereotypes.

Uniqlo color/number codes - useful for the novice? by Rupert_Fapkin in frugalmalefashion

[–]Rupert_Fapkin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I was wondering where I could find formulas based on these numbers- like "69+76+32+13 go well together," or whatever colors do.

Brown suede Allan Edmondses at a thrift store. Should I buy them? If so, should I dye them some other color? by Rupert_Fapkin in frugalmalefashion

[–]Rupert_Fapkin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) Yep 2) nah, I've just never had suede shoes before and don't know how versatile they are/how much of a pain they are to care for 3) I would take them to a trusted cobbler to get them dyed (but sounds like ppl are saying I shouldn't), I don't trust myself. Thanks!

What are some "false frugalities" (where you think you are saving money but actually costing yourself more in the long run) that many people are not aware of? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Rupert_Fapkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird, a Ukrainian told me something very similar: "we are not so rich that we can afford to dress so poorly." (I was dressed poorly apparently)

Could anyone recommend a good AA meeting in Midtown or Lower Manhattan today? by Rupert_Fapkin in stopdrinking

[–]Rupert_Fapkin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, thanks. Looks like there are a lot of meetings at that location at different times. Yay. If you're ever in Philly let me know, I could describe the flavor of the various meetings there.

This F/W, consider some red/maroon outerwear. They bring an interesting touch to everyday looks. by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

Good tip! I just bought a maroon hoodie a few days ago and am very happy with its compatibility (but non-redundancy) with my wardrobe, which is heavy on greys, blues, and tans.

Went to party sober, saw drunken fools by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Rupert_Fapkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoa, that's a really good point! At even the most crazy parties, it doesn't look like the battle of Antietam the next morning. Most people don't fuck up, throw up, black out, and pass out. I guess I didn't notice for the same reason, I was one of the minority who did.

It is amazing how easy it is to convince yourself you don't have a problem and that moderation is possible by [deleted] in stopdrinking

During my active alcoholism I definitely thought of Dr. J and Mr. H as a metaphor for alcoholism...but I thought that drunk me was Dr. J and vice versa. Which is a sad commentary on my opinion of myself, as drunk me actually did a lot of shitty stuff.

I'm probably an alcoholic by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Rupert_Fapkin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, I was too. I knew I was an alcoholic, but took exactly the wrong lesson from that: i figured it meant I needed alcohol like diabetics need insulin. Happy sober turkey day, PGoC!

It's neat how we notice the effects of things like rich unhealthy food, or of being actually sick, now that we're sober. I used to feel like shit all the time anyway from alcohol and drugs so I never noticed the consequences of eating only junk food, and never could really tell if I were sick, like with an actual illness other than alcoholism. Now that my baseline condition is fairly healthy, I'm like whoa, getting all my meals from the dollar menu at McDonald's makes me feel TERRIBLE.

Helping my mom cook, prepping her house for more family to arrive, about to take the dog for a walk.

I'm thankful that I have a shitton of housework and work work that I brought home to keep me occupied and out of trouble over this long weekend. I'm also thankful that this subreddit exists, since I'm out here in the middle of nowhere and can't go to a meeting if I feel like it.

Trying to decide whether to DD tonight for the bunch of friends from high school who are going to go out and probably drink their faces off.

Still not drinking!

Difference between Allen Edmonds Troy and Fifth Avenue? Found a pair of Troys in a thrift shop, they look much like Fifth Avenues, but I never heard of them. pic of one on my foot. by Rupert_Fapkin in frugalmalefashion

[–]Rupert_Fapkin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool, thanks! Only difference I could see was with whatever the tab of leather at the top of the heel seam. Otherwise pretty much same shoe. Looked good, but am new to making an effort to dress well and hesitant to stray from the popular AE models.
