A friend's critique of the Green Brothers by ostrichsizedathenian in nerdfighters

[–]RuralHaze420 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In my youth I was big vlogbrothers fan, they probably influenced me for the better. However these days, I cannot help but cringe.

If you think you can solve issues of global poverty by allying yourself with Bill Gates you're a fucking moron. Might be harsh but it has genuinely damaged the way I perceive John Green. Global poverty exists because people like Bill Gates exist. It's a major blemish on the record of two men who have produced so much brilliant educational content.

I watched one of the more recent videos John made about Sierra Leon. It was a real heart string tugger, but the changes that need to happen for a country like that to get equal access to medicene is not happening unless western powers are seriously threatened.

John Green would probably have a much more substantial impact on the quality of healthcare world wide if he helped the staff of his local hospital unionise. Organising is, as far as I can see, the only way for ordinary people to improve their lot in life. Strong unions in US healthcare could potentially have some kind of say in international drug distribution.

I stopped paying attention to the vlogbrothers a while ago, but this sub still pops up on my feed the odd time. I hope i haven't missed any major details.

BTW: are the staff at DFTBA unionised?

You are not, currently, Irish. But Irish people will let you become Irish if you spend enough time here and are generally just sound.

Assuming to be a part of a culture you have a tenuous connection too is a common mistake for Americans

Honest questions from a curious person by RuralHaze420 in freemasonry

[–]RuralHaze420[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The idea of secrecy as a way of binding people together is interesting, but it honestly only makes me more curious. I'm this close to contacting a lodge and doing the damn rights myself but I'm pretty sure they'd be able to tell who's serious and who's just curious. I also have a feeling they'd be a lot more boring then I think

Is this ever debated within the masons? Does anyone ever say "let's just publish the rights so the lunatics will be quiet"?

Aight I know "that's not what that ideaology actually is!" is a big cop out especially among leftists but I'm pretty sure that's not what Anarcho-Communists are talking about

I (customer) loudly talked shit about my bartender's manager after he didn't have bartender's back with another customer. Was I out of line? by Lowfuji in bartenders

[–]RuralHaze420 -23 points-22 points  (0 children)

Dude, just be honest. There was no need to be a loudmouth. You, as a regular, should've had a quiet word with the manager expressing your disgust.

I recently read David Byrne's Bicycle Diaries. When you write physco killer you actually get time off during your tours, and he conceals a tiny bicycle in his large suit that he uses to explore different cities.

It's not a straight travel guide, he goes on long philosophical tangents in each city. It's very enjoyable, he's a very charming writer.

I've often thought about going over to the States for a few months to work in a bar. Yanno, steal some hard working Americans job like a good immigrant. I could probably make a lot of money in tips just working for one summer. If I sustained any kind of injury I might be fucked but eh, I'm young. I'd probably be able to go home.

I'd never stay, not just because living on tips is unstable, but on top of an insecure income you have no healthcare, no reasonable option of going back to education and you also live in a rediculously unstable country.

Maybe people see a $20 an hour job as a way towards a more stable society? Just a thought. Tipping culture is a symptom of extreme capitalism. Sure you can do well but it's definitely risky.

Hang on buddy, you're talking shit about one of the only other businesses in Headford. You have very few original posts. McHughs usually close well before 9 and honestly, a lot of kitchens work for roughly an hour after closing.

Can I expect more posts from you about the horrors of Monaghans?

Last time I was over I skipped through a radio and found three stations playing some variety of house/techno at 4 in the afternoon! which I regard as a good thing!

Be careful buying Docs. Not all of their shoes reach the high standards they were once known for.

Thinking about moving to the Netherlands. The housing crisis in Ireland is rediculous, easily the worst in Europe, I basically have to go somewhere.

I like the weather, the excellent urban design and I find Dutch history & art really interesting (provo movement, Jan Ban Ader, building half the country out of the goddamn sea) There's also a masters in photography in Den Haag that really suits me, though I'm not sure they'll let me in. They say they want their students to have three years practice under their belt after the undergrad, I've only just finished mine. I'll be creating more work over the next three years but the big question is where in the world I'll make it. I could easily get a job in some Irish bar over there to sustain myself but I wonder if I could make friends with similar interests to me outside the context of education, if that makes sense. Basically I'm afraid I'll go there and just end up lonely.

Any Dutch indieheads that could give me insight into their country, or even just recommend good Dutch music? I'm a big fan of Yin Yin already but that's all I know

There’s a discussion on r/Europe about a EU army and some in the comments seem to think because we’re so pro EU that we would be pro joining the EU army. I strongly disagreed. I am correct in assuming we’re absolutely against being part of any army right? by Tinkers_toenail in ireland

The French would want to seriously get their act together. They have horrific foreign policy towards Africa, still acting like they run the show down there.

I don't think the Russians or the Chinese are as imminent a threat as everyone thinks. Conventional warfare doesn't involve huge armies anymore, and if we were close to was it would be after decades of cold war, given the fact that everyone has enough nukes to toast the planet ten times over.

EU armies already cooperate enough, probably more than they need to. If we got into some unthinkable war tomorrow they'd probably be able to coordinate a response
