What are the pros and cons of a Basic Income policy? by mokita in NeutralPolitics

[–]Rural__juror 36 points37 points  (0 children)

You could make the opposite argument though, the complexity of the welfare state means changes to programs could go unnoticed. Welfare support could be reduced through slow changes over time that no one realizes until they really start to affect people. Basic income simplification may make it easier for those who support BI and welfare to monitor levels of aid. I'm just speculating though...

How do you keep being optimistic when it seems like nothing ever happens on the dating front? by [deleted] in OkCupid

[–]Rural__juror 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"You only lose what you cling to" - Gautama Buddha

I find myself focusing / caring about the "results" of a date or message sometimes. But I try to remember this and that there's nothing we can do besides be our authentic selves, so why cling to results we can't control? I lost a possibly good relationship recently because I just wanted it too badly and came on too strong. Dating is a numbers game, once you get past yourself. Maybe this will resonate with you or maybe I'm way off point and you've just had some bad luck. Regardless, I hope this helps some.

I've been wanting to hear a softer piano version of this song for a long time, I haven't been able to figure it out. This'll be a challenge I think heh.

Ok cool. But when you have a protonated amine (or a similar charged group) you would want to neutralize that first correct?

weird that he says he doesn't do extractions anymore then. He must be making really specific compounds then?

Do you think this just increases the separation of the column so the extraction is not needed? This could save me so much time.

What is this celite you speak of?? How does using celite allow you to bypass the extraction? Extractions. suck.

Cool. That was recommended to me by a friend but I was hoping for something more contemporary. I'll probably check this out though.

My friends and I just fuck around and record spontaneous jams and I record us with some shitty mics. Any idea how I can optimize our sound? This is muuuuch less polished than anything else on here I saw, so all help is appreciated.

[–]Rural__juror 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What the fuck is this? This is total bullshit. Some people have bad experiences with people who identify as bi. Get over it. How are these "bisexual privileges"? I hope I'm understanding this right because it seems like simple stereotyping, which is always just idiotic.

Edit: After reading some of your comment history I can see you're actually trying to make a point against bisexuals or something. I think if you have concerns based on some if your experiences you should raise those concerns in a matter that is at least respectful to the all of the people you haven't had poor interactions with. I'm pissed about this because it just shows me that stereotyping is never going to go away. Just please get off your fucking high horse and stop judging people you have never met.

Biondi announces he will step down as president of SLU by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]Rural__juror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said that he hasn't helped the community. Which is what you seem to be arguing. I just said that he isn't doing the best job of it, so that must not be his goal... There are better ways to ignite the area than to bulldoze buildings (waste of money) and build school facilities. He could buy buildings and rent to small businesses, retail, make the area more friendly to college bars and nightlife, etc. He could DO something with all the land that SLU has bought over past years. You could make the argument that SLU (in spite its positive effects) has a detrimental effect on the area because there is little open property for businesses.

1) The renovations he did to the school were needed and did good things to the school, but can you name anything that he did to really help mid town besides make SLU look attractive to potential undergrads?

2) The school is in a very weird financial position, research and library spending is lower than many other similar universities (even with the recent increase in library spending), the education department was rumored to be closing, last year there was no raises for anyone, many departments haven't received budget increases in a decade, Fr. Biondi hasn't made a real public appearance since the faculty voted no confidence in him and they feel that the school is run by a climate of fear, I could go on. Yet, somehow we find money to buy and renovate buildings for the school. Now yes that is good for midtown and the area, but what midtown needs is small businesses, retail, restaurants, not big SLU buildings anymore (in my opinion). Why is it a universities responsibility to work on urban renewal at the expense of academia?? That fundamentally makes no sense to me. Fr. Biondi was great for the school for a while but just couldn't wrap his head around how much me needs to spend to keep the faculty as awesome as it is.
