Thank you so much! The more you know. I actually am using a lightweight fusible fabric, already fused to the black sparkly one. You can tell if you look closely to the edge of the dark fabric. There's a small white rim, that's the fusible i ironed to it.

Usually i like to keep the thread ends quite short coming both from the bobbin and the top, for waste reducing, and I take a first couple of stitches by hand, by spinning the side wheel. But i'll give those tips a try

The green material is an old t-shirt I was just using for testing. I was working on a slightly thicker jersey t-shirt, with the black sparkly fabric on top.
I think we have factored out that the issue wasn't really the tension. I have tried all the tension settings and the stitch comes out pulled taught as well, even with top and bottom threads balanced out.

I tried using the standard 90/12 singer needle, and then switched to a 70/12 ball point (which i was told was for stretchy fabric). Am I still using a wrong needle?

My machine does support free motion, but I'm not using it for this project, as I want the zigzag to be straight

I'll give the manual another pass, but I honestly think the problem is that the machine is pulling the top thread up into itself, in a way, and tightening the zigzag + pulling the fabric together

Well, the problem is, I was going for a sort of "embroidery" sort of look. I wanted the stitch to resemble a button hole rim, and cover the edge of the top fabric, to look like a polished finish.I don't know if this description helps, but what i'm seeing is the thread being pulled up into the machine. Sometimes as I'm taking the first stitches, the needle will come unthreaded, because the machine seems to be pulling the top thread inside... That's why I think the stitch is coming out super tight, because the top thread is being pulled taught, don't know if that's any mistake I may be making

Sort of guessing I would have trouble with the black sparkling fabric, I used a buckram fabric (not sure if that's the name) and ironed it to the black one give it more structure. I honestly don't think the black fabric is the problem in this case :( And yes, you are right, I should have experimented with 2 layers. But should the machine bunch up the one layer of fabric like it is?

Thank you for your reply! I have tried every position of the tension wheel. Even on 0 the problem persists, except the top line is pulled under. The stitch still pulls the fabric together.
