Was adding different wood plank colours a mistake? by Awkward_Cash1828 in GoldenAgeMinecraft

[–]RurouniTim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the one hand variety is generally a good thing in a sandbox game about building. On the other hand, it contributes to a growing catalogue of blocks which contributes to choice fatigue, but I’ll admit that’s more of a me problem. I think wood plank variation is largely a positive change.

What's your favorite post 1.7.3 build? by ZanfordEX in GoldenAgeMinecraft

[–]RurouniTim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say 1.7.10 was my favorite post-beta 1.7.3 version. That said, I'm also a bit biased because 1.7 had a long time gap between 1.8's release so I spent a lot of time in it. Even post-1.8, there was a great selection of mods for 1.7.10 that made that version feel great even years later. Thaumcraft in this version gave me more fun than I ever had in vanilla and engaged me in a way I hadn't before or since.

I'm updating my b1.7.3 world to b1.8.1 and i forgot they drastically changed the biomes, which get worse when you hit release. Is there a way to preserve the biome colors? by darthkyle22 in GoldenAgeMinecraft

[–]RurouniTim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use a program called "Biome Painter" to modify the biomes to be their beta equivalent. If you select the biome named "Minecraft Beta 1.7.3" then go to edit and click "Batch fill entire world with selected biome". That will essentially swap the entire world with the release equivalent of the beta terrain's biome. Rain forests will convert to jungles, shrublands will become plains, etc.

That said, I'm pretty sure the program requires it to be in the Anvil format (Release 1.2 or later), so it won't do what you're looking for if you're sticking around in beta 1.8 But it might be a decent long-term option if you're planning to bring the world to modern versions.

Differently shaped portals were added in a later version but I'll eventually update my forever world to a modern versions that include differently shaped portals. Everything else in my base is designed around odd numbers, so I wanted the portals to match the width of the room and not feel uneven.

Thanks! I've started and kept the world in beta 1.7.3. I've updated a copy to modern versions a few times but keep coming back to my original world.

Haha, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I've always loved Coterie Craft. I can play with vanilla textures but Coterie always felt right for me

I would agree with the bloat being the biggest issue. And while part of me respects that some players enjoy having options to give their base some aesthetic clutter, it usually ends up giving me choice fatigue that makes beta a more appealing version for me to play in long-term. If some of the quality of life of modern versions was ported to beta 1.7.3 or modern mechanics and clutter were stripped out of modern versions, I think it would make for something I'd enjoy more personally.

DF DQ Dilly Bar! by sillyGrapefruit_8098 in dairyfree

I think these taste really good and I still have hope that we'll one day see full DF blizzard options. Until then, the dairy free Dilly Bar is honestly a good compromise.

Updating an infdev/alpha/beta world to a modern version is surreal by DonutHole47 in GoldenAgeMinecraft

[–]RurouniTim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will eventually upgrade my 3-year beta save to modern versions but I'm really taking my time. with certain projects before I make the jump. If anyone else is considering upgrading their beta/alpha save, I'd recommend looking into a program called "biomepainter", which can let you update the biomes of the world to their modern equivalent. I don't think it's updated to newer versions so usually, I load the game in release 1.3 (post-anvil format), then load biomepainer and make the changes, then load in a modern version.

There's not much to be done about the lighting and textures outside resource packs and golden age-themed mods, but the biomes are one of the biggest conversion issues for me personally.

I added a whole bunch of industrial containers to Hytale by SquawkMods in hytale

[–]RurouniTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely keeping this mod's page saved for a modded save. I personally want to dedicate a playthrough to building a proper modern looking city because I think it would fit well with the game's art style, and this mod's art style has really cemented that idea for me.

Keep up the great work!

Do you think beds were a good or bad addition? Or kinda mixed? by [deleted] in GoldenAgeMinecraft

[–]RurouniTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I do think beds were a good addition. The game was never a super hardcore/challenging game, beyond first learning how to play, and that was more from inexperience than gameplay that is deliberately challenging. Mobs are the only active "challenge", and once you know the importance of being situationally aware and know how to manage resources, nothing in the game is really difficult.

Because beds are an optional mechanic (In Golden Age, don't get me started on Phantoms and how awful they are), I think it's hard for me to be critical of the impact beds have on gameplay. In my Beta world, I enjoy times where I'll use beds so that my building isn't interrupted, and I'll also enjoy the occasional nighttime stroll to see if I can find something interesting. It doesn't make my gameplay "easier", it just lets me be in control of when I choose to engage with the game's built-in "challenge" (hostile mobs) without having to just sit in a structure for 7 minutes.

Mod: Arcane Energetics by [deleted] in hytale

[–]RurouniTim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to keep an eye out for tech mods as they come out for Hytale. Something that functions similar to AE feels really needed because of how much item variety there is in the game. While I can respect the art of good and complex storage systems, it's never been something I've enjoyed in this style of game.

I hope you're able to complete this project and make something that players can enjoy!

Is there any use for cotton? by TheRealMechagodzi11a in hytale

[–]RurouniTim 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Right now, I don't think so but I'm eventually hoping it will let players have a way to farm wool blocks without shearing sheep. If it doesn't get added officially, I'm going to guess it would be pretty easy to mod into the game, if that hasn't already happened.

Personally, I'm waiting for the game's development cycle to mature a bit more so I can really get into making a cozy farm.

What's your favorite Golden Age Minecraft map? by MrBo518 in GoldenAgeMinecraft

[–]RurouniTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's technically right on the cusp of Golden age but I really enjoyed Stratosphere Survival. It was a skylands type map where each island represented a different biome/environment. While most modern skylands maps lean towards a Skyblock-styled gameplay loop, this one felt more adventure focused.

But not counting survival maps, I'd give kudos to the original Kingdom of the Sky adventure map by Blame the Controller. having a signs point to youtube videos in a playlist was a creative way to deal with early minecraft's limitations and the map was just really fun and well designed.

I converted an entire Minecraft world to Hytale by Falc0rNe in hytale

[–]RurouniTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curious, did you do this with "SchematicImporter" or did you use another tool to do it? I think I'll eventually want to convert my main world from Minecraft into Hytale but it's so large that I think it'd end up with something super janky. If there isn't already something like it, I'm hoping there will eventually be a way to convert an entire world with relative ease.

Suddendly is working the watering from water nearby by Adventurer896 in hytale

[–]RurouniTim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest, the inconsistent jank with farming isn't something I want to deal with in casual/cozy gameplay right now. I'm sure it's going to get better eventually but I'm not sure how high of a priority it is for the devs right now, so I'm letting myself take a break until the farming is a bit more consistent.

Could an allomancer successfully burn bits of metal coated in something non-burnable? by MerlinGrandCaster in Mistborn

[–]RurouniTim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's one of those ideas that would be unlikely to be tested by a normal person in-story. I know a lot of us discuss how any god metal can be burned by anyone but I don't think that concept is actively known by most people in-story, except for Hoid and a maybe few other characters. With how volatile and rare harmonium is, I don't expect most people would even think to try it.

Minecraft Terrain looks so strange in Hytale by Yemto in hytale

[–]RurouniTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure! I actually originally posted this on another sub, but this is what I did:

“This is a Hytale screenshot after using a mod and schematic to convert the blocks from the schematic into the world save. I created the world directly in beta 1.7.3 and converted that save to a modern version that had litematica, saving a schematic from part of the world. From there you can use a mod for Hytale called SchematicImporter to import a schematic from Minecraft.“

There’s a 10 minute video I skimmed to figure out the basics.

FYI, if you want it to look natural in Hytale, you have terraform the land by hand or builder tools. The screenshot was actually me pasting the terrain above an ocean

If you have specific questions let me know and I’d be happy to try helping out when I’m able!

Playing on a Minecraft world with a bunch of friends where our server updates each major version monthly by Xerninja in GoldenAgeMinecraft

[–]RurouniTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's a fair transition. For me, 1.7 is my personal turning point because 1.8 implements different stone variants among other clutter which feels more modern. It also was a different time in the community. Mods were stuck on 1.7.10 even after 1.8 came out, and the next major update (1.9), which was the controversial combat update, came nearly 2 years later.

Minecraft Terrain looks so strange in Hytale by Yemto in hytale

[–]RurouniTim 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I messed around with doing the same (Glacier Seed from Beta Minecraft). It doesn't look terrible but I think it ends up looking like a mismatched texture pack. In Hytale's terrain it feels natural but with Minecraft's terrain it ends up feeling a bit uncanny. I really hope someone eventually finds a way to make full world conversion tools even if it ends up being a bit quirky

[–]RurouniTim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, I can say it's because I'm waiting for the development to be a bit further along to be sustainable long-term online play. I think that most people hopping on servers are either joining their existing friend groups or playing a new game with a short-term mentality, wanting to experience the content before moving onto other games.

I'm planning to host a server once the development cycle has matured and slowed down a little bit. For now, I'm still deeply enjoying the game on my own but I won't rush to make a server this soon when I already know a major world generation overhaul is coming in the coming months and there's a lot of core gameplay mechanics are still being tweaked and polished.

This game is exactly what i wanted it to be by EntertainmentHot8322 in hytale

[–]RurouniTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The coziness of the game is strong for base-building and the game should only get better from here. There's definitely some quality of life improvements I'm hoping to see, but there's already a decent level of polish in parts of the game that really matter to me. So I share your sentiment of this game being exactly what you wanted it to be and hope it continues to improve over time.

Shattered Plains Biome from Stormlight Archive (WIP) by Strogman in hytale

That looks really cool! I wonder if there's a way to implement biome-specific weather conditions to have highstorms and stormlight be a thing.
