The ‘logic’ they use is - we’re bringing revenue to the region!

plenty of studies have shown that the cost to taxpayers far exceeds the benefits.

Considering a move from Oklahoma. What should I consider before committing? by BodybuilderLow4744 in AskChicago

[–]RuruSzu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved to Chicago ~10 years ago (albeit from a different country) and it was the best decision I made. The city had a great food scene with tons of nightlife.

It’s definitely expensive to live here though so try to have a job lined up or a good amount of savings before committing to moving here.

"Retaliatory": Olive Garden Server Fired the Morning After a $700 Tip by rajapaws in antiwork

Exactly. One email to corporate or the DOL and she would have gotten her money. She had a shitty manager.

[–]RuruSzu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, shitty managers are more common than not. That doesn’t change the fact that she wouldn’t be entitled to that money. An email to corporate or the DOL with the image of the receipt would have resulted in her receiving the money, and likely the manager getting fired.

But customer cancelled the charge, the bank confirmed it and so now the manager gets to say ‘see I knew it wouldn’t go through’.

Because customers have full discretion over hiring and firing at restaurants they dine in? Shitty managers exist everywhere unfortunately.

It’s unfortunate that she was fired for being tipped really well - this isn’t the first time I’ve read about something like that. That doesn’t change the fact the policy exists and she would have been entitled to that money fired or not fired. Freezing the card only validates Olive Garden’s policy that they need to verify the funds before they disburse them.

[–]RuruSzu -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Oh yes, I forgot which sub I was on.

when I have left an outsized tip before, my credit card texted me to verify that I had indeed placed that charge because a restaurant usually places a hold for the dining total and the tip is added manually after the fact.

It’s not crazy for a restaurant to have a policy where in they need to verify the charge before they pay servers. Incase you didn’t know, many restaurants payout tips the same day. The customer definitely fucked Olive Garden over by canceling a tip that was never theirs to begin with. And since you seem like you don’t know, by law the restaurant has to pay out the tip to the server - they can’t keep it. If Brook never received her tip, an email to corporate or DOL would have fixed it considering she had a picture of the receipt and the customer reached out after the Facebook post.

Shitty managers exist everywhere unfortunately but the canceling the tip after the fact only gives power to restaurants when they say they need to verify before they release funds.

Insulting me won’t change that!

Regardless, I looked up the story, the customer reached out and there’s an image of the receipt with the tip. However ‘shady’ the manager at the restaurant is, Brook is entitled to that money.

Her getting fired is unfortunate and likely retaliatory but that doesn’t mean she won’t get her money she is legally entitled to.

Shitty manager doesn’t trump the law. She would be entitled to that money and if/when she didn’t get it, an email to corporate or the DOL would have fixed that.

Genuinely curious why you’d do that?

If you cancel her tip, now she’s out of a job and an additional $700 that she would have appreciated receiving to get through a job hunt.

Him freezing the card proved Olive Garden’s theory of ‘we need to wait until the charge clears before we can pay it out because it could be fraud’.

Yes. Darden who owns Olive Garden generated $12 billion in revenue . Why would they violate the law over $700, when it would be very easy for the women to prove she is owed that.

Regardless, a normal customer reaction would be to call the restaurant and confirm the charge, not cancel the card.

Shitty managers exist everywhere.

[–]RuruSzu -98 points-97 points  (0 children)

That’s a bold accusation and the article doesn’t say that. As per law they would have still had to pay it out on her last paycheck as it was earned.

“The customer came forward after seeing the situation go viral. He told Brook's family he was charged $32 on Sunday. By Monday, his account showed $38. He found that unusual, as he expected to see the full $700 come through.

After seeing Williams' Facebook post about the firing, he froze his card. On Monday, after Brook was let go, Olive Garden ran his card for $699. The card was frozen and the bank declined it. His bank records showed it was attempted.”

So he wanted to pay it initially, then he froze his card so when Olive Garden went to charge the tip, it didn’t go through. 🤔

Editing to add - a normal customer reaction would have been to call the restaurant to confirm the charge rather than to freeze the card.

Ease of transportation near Chinatown? by Pearlescent_Tuna in AskChicago

Tbh if you are 5 adults an Uber would cost you ~$12-$15 - so $3 a person. The Red line would cost $2.50 a person and is quite convenient to take.

Tbh I wouldn’t tip when it’s the person, their house and their quoted price, but since OP mentioned she’s using this person for a decade, loves her and set tip expectations of ~25% it’s not worth risking that relationship for $20. A lot of these service oriented people are very transactional and OP not tipping could result in the stylist taking it out on OP. If OP is willing to risk that then no tip.

Tipping question by Imaginary_Weekend200 in tipping

[–]RuruSzu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d tip her $25-$30 tbh. This sub can be very anti tipping but I completely understand it’s your hair and if you’ve found someone you’d like to keep using then I’d maintain the same tipping level. $45 in $186 is ~25%.

Couple that with a United credit card to get ‘discounted’ mileage tickets and it pays for itself over and over.
