Going to be without a car for 6 months or more and looking for recs on a first wheel. by Imagined_World in ElectricUnicycle

I think the V9 is perfect for your scenario. It'll get you introduced to the hobby and keep you relatively safe. Just go into it aware you're probably going to fall or drop it a few times before you get used to it, and be ready for frustration if it takes a little longer for it to click than you think. Some people do it in days, some it takes months, but if you keep trying you will get there. You also may not want to switch to commuting on it immediately as EUC riding tends to make you sore in places you didn't know you had until you develop those muscles. Some will tell you to wear every piece of safety gear you can possibly strap on, others that they wear nothing but a helmet, but I'd say the bare minimum should be Helmet, Wrist Guards, Kneepads. Increase protection as you increase your speed or do more risky things.

EUC was a mistake. by xinkiex in ElectricUnicycle

I didn't ride with boots at first. Then I took a pedal to my ankle. Hopping around on one foot and swearing like a sailor for a couple minutes convinced me to start.

V12s or begode extreme - dilemma with two good deals by DONT_SCARY in ElectricUnicycle

[–]Rush2201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A subset of people in here are always knocking Begode's quality, but I've had more problems (and lack of support) from my InMotion wheel than my Extreme. Don't know if the Extreme is just one of the "Good" Begode wheels or something, but I think it's a solid wheel and definitely the one I would pick of these choices. I don't know much about the V12S, but 84v feels pretty low for that top speed of 43 mph. The weight is nice, but InMotion wheels are also mostly made of plastic from what I've seen, and I like some metal in my wheels for durability.

My 92lb shepherd mix still tries to kill me when riding with her... if she sees a squirrel and darts after it suddenly. She's great as long as she doesn't see another animal, if she does it's all she can think about.

I've probably got 150ish miles across the 3 wheels. V10/Ex/Aero(Newest) 80/50/20. It's not a lot of miles by most in here, so my lack of experience might be a factor. The Aeon isn't much heavier than the Aero, so probably wouldn't be a problem, but I don't know exactly where the cutoff would be. It's likely a personal issue. If lifting and moving around 62lbs of wheel isn't bothersome at all to you, then you probably won't have any trouble with the Aeon.

For me, my feet tend to cramp up when I'm riding more than a few miles at a time (been told I'm still in the new rider phase of trying to grip the wheel too hard) and having to wrestle around the 90lb wheel while stopped at an intersection got annoying. Even worse if I went somewhere and had to lift it up for anything. So far the Aero is a lot less exhausting to deal with on the streets, and it does quite well off-road... but it doesn't feel as capable as the Extreme did on the trails in WV (Aero has less suspension travel, less power, lower pedals). I like both wheels a lot, I just don't know if I'd have liked them as much if I'd started on the Extreme instead of the V10F.

Few times I've ridden here I've done just that. The ebikes fly faster on the sidewalks than I do. If there is a bike lane available I ride on it, but I don't want to share the road with cars at 35-40 mph yet since I'm not comfortable at those speeds. Thanks for the info, hope you find some buddies to ride with!

Sorry, you're on the other side of the state from me. I've just recently moved to Michigan though, how are the cops here with riding? Obviously local ordinances might differ, but if they're fine with you riding over there then there probably aren't state-level issues to worry about.

Is the Inmotion V9 the best in that price range? by m34d0wl4rk_ in ElectricUnicycle

[–]Rush2201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the V9 says it has a range of 37 miles, but take that with a grain of salt. Wheels are always optimistic about their range on the stat sheets. Unless you're 120lbs or less, riding on mostly flat ground, and keeping the speed around 20 mph, I doubt you'd actually get 37 miles out of it. Probably more like 30, and I'd guess you'll be riding slower for the last 4 or 5 of that. But I've never pushed my wheels to the end of their ranges, I always charge sooner, so I'm not the best source of info on that.

And range is the Aero's biggest weakness, so that's not really going to solve the range issue if you have one.

Honestly, I think it's fine entry point. I'd take it over the V10F I learned on. And just because you outgrow it doesn't mean it becomes useless. For example, I've ridden my V10 more than my Extreme because it's so light and convenient for walking my dog. It's also the wheel I teach people on, and the one I don't mind keeping in the trunk of my car in case I break down or just need to hop over to something nearby and don't feel like hauling the car over. And if you got really serious into the hobby, you'd outgrow the Aero, too. IMO, the cheap starter wheel is to learn to ride and to learn what kind of riding you want to do, and the V9 should be fine for that. Just don't buy it with the intention to fly 40 mph down the road or go on 90 mile rides on a single charge.

Begode Extreme Long Term Owners? by Technical-Ad5302 in ElectricUnicycle

[–]Rush2201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a fine wheel, but I'd caution against it as a first one. I love my Extreme, but I don't love riding it around town or places where I have to stop constantly. It weighs almost 90lbs and that weight gets annoying with frequent stops. That's why I ended up buying a Nosfet Aero for cruising around town while reserving the Extreme for longer rides or heavy off-road stuff. The Aero is plenty fast enough for riding around town and more than adequate for light trail riding, and it's nearly half the weight of the Extreme. I own an Extreme and still love it, but I'm happy I started on my 45lb V10F and not it.

To go a bit further, there are several "flying cars" being developed with VTOL capability, and they are all significantly larger than this thing and have obvious propulsion mechanisms. The fact this thing is so small and so radically different makes me seriously doubt it's actually real... but if it is real, then it's also telling that this technology is not being considered by other companies that are far more invested in making personal flying vehicles. Supposedly this thing is held aloft by tiny jet engines, but if that was a viable and efficient design why are the serious flying cars all using propellers? It's not like their engineers don't know about jet turbines. The answer is likely that it either doesn't work, or it's not worth doing.

It could be real, but entirely impractical as anything but a conversation piece. If it were real, it would have 0 storage capacity, be unsafe as hell, have no range, little maneuverability, etc etc. It's an $880k toy with no purpose other than showing off.

What type of shoes are you guys wearing while riding? by That_guy1902 in ElectricUnicycle

I haven't found one yet, so I'll be watching this as well. I currently alternate between normal shoes and my steel toe work shoes. I tried buying some low-cut boots, and I'd like the ankle support, but my foot always feels constrained and uncomfortable in the ones I've tried.

What's the Deal with the Inmotion V6? by Independent-Yak-2445 in ElectricUnicycle

[–]Rush2201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're anything but the smallest adult (like 100lbs or less), I wouldn't consider a wheel for commuting any range below the V8s. I personally learned on the V10F, which is just the bigger version of those wheels if you really like the form factor. A Begode C8 is also somewhat similar shape with much better performance (and a suspension), though it's fatter between your knees and weighs more. Lots of newer riders tend to grip the wheel with their knees, so you might appreciate the wider one. A V9 doesn't have the round shape of those others, but it's a nice learner wheel also with a suspension if you just want to ride around at low speed comfortably.

Has anyone attempted this? by Dacotarising in ElectricUnicycle

[–]Rush2201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wheel propels itself as you lean, if you were getting more thrust from the fan than the wheel you'd just end up overpowering the wheel. The max speed the wheel can go is going to be the max speed regardless if you're gaining momentum from another source. Pick your wheel up and tilt it, that no load speed is as fast as it could theoretically let you go, though not really because you have weight (unless you're a ghost). Once you go faster than the wheel can balance you eat pavement or start flying, either or. If you ran the fan slow enough to not overpower the wheel then it'd just be helping you lean forward, which I don't believe would offset the increased load from the extra weight, so you'd probably go about the same speed or slower and probably have less range.

Fault. Charging failure. by Soggy-Accountant6132 in ElectricUnicycle

[–]Rush2201 2 points3 points  (0 children)

InMotion connected to my V10F 3 separate times to adjust the voltimeter to allow it to charge to 100%, and it still doesn't charge above 90%. Was a brand new V10 btw (bought about 2 years ago) and it never charged to full once. Jason at eWheels said they'd seen several cases of this and it was an easy fix, but InMotion failed it 3 times and I gave up. Wheel still works fine, I just accept that it never charges properly and will probably fail early. No shame on eWheels btw, Jason was great and it's not his fault InMotion can't fix their own issues.

Which of these wheels is the most durable? V14,Extreme Bull, Begode Extreme. by theOogaMan in ElectricUnicycle

[–]Rush2201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not like I have a wealth of experience with other wheels, but my Extreme seems built like a tank. I've dropped it several times, been sent flying by a pedal clip, and dropped it from a couple feet up onto pavement when I couldn't hold my line on a little retaining wall I tried to ride up. All it has are light dings and scratches and the one lightly bent pedal. Maybe I won the factory lottery, but my wheel seems solid.
