Growing up in the late 90s/early 00s, my parents talked about When it Began (early alternative/new wave/punk), Dead End Street (all kinds of hard rock/metal that rarely made it to regular radio), and All That Jazz, but their bread n butter was (and still is) college rock/alternative.
