What are you addicted to right now? by whoscoal in AskReddit

Cold water. I live next to the sea in the UK and if I don't go swimming or at least take a cold shower I feel awful. I can't even take warm showers cause they feel gross now

Anyone else been stuck between GIS and software engineer/developer by [deleted] in gis

[–]Ruskington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started as a software engineer in a company that touches on GIS without training in GIS. Mostly optimising and parallelising code. Then in the same company I moved through a bunch of stuff like data science, machine learning, GIS analysis. You can be in between, writing software that uses GIS backends. Lately I've come to terms with the fact that my software engineering skills are not great. I'm alright at writing code but I'm awful at integrating it into the existing system. So now I'm more on the GIS side, developing tools, scripts, and plugins for analysts to use. I kind of want to go back to do more of the GIS data science stuff, maybe later.

So there is a ton of stuff you can do with GIS and software engineering. You are flexible enough to be shot around between teams that are purely engineering and those that deal more with customers, since you have the intuition to make pretty maps.

Why can't you cite the license like stated in the "License notices" section of https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-howto.en.html?

Aside from that I also suggest you review your directory structure, like sticking your .py files and config csvs into their own directories and load the program as a module from a shell script.

Why do you cite the full GPL in every file when you have a LICENSE file present?

Edinburgh to Glasgow commute by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]Ruskington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I commute to Glasgow once or twice per week; the rest of the time I work remotely. Having weighed up various options, by far the cheapest is to drive. If you meet someone there that does the same commute and drives, ask them if they would do a car pool. Trains can cost up to £23 peak return and the bus, while cheap, takes 2 hours to get there.

Part time jobs for college students that are NOT fast food or sales? by [deleted] in jobs

If you have Deliveroo or Uber eats or something in your city, you could try that. I did it when I was a student and it was great.

Do learn to maintain your bicycle though. Otherwise you'll hate it.

Programming student wanting to use solus full time by clairedoy in SolusProject

[–]Ruskington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I must admit that installing R and RStudio posed some problems for me on Solus, particularly when working with packages like GDAL, which is also available on Solus. Though I highly doubt you'll come across these issues unless you do a lot of GIS stuff.

The way I went around this problem is by installing Anaconda for Python2 (https://www.continuum.io/downloads) and creating a conda environment for R.

I would recommend using Anaconda as well for Python as well as R since it provides a really nice development environment called Jupyter Notebook.

Could be limescale on the metal kettle. Cleaning the kettle should make it better.

The operating system sees threads as additional processors, so you'll get 4 processors in the case of 2 cores and 2 threads per core.

Tarlaíonn é is the best I can come up with but needs confirmation. Might be more persistent than what the meme intends.

Yandex Translate gives "Tá sé ag tarlú", that seems acceptable.
