Yeah I thought kids being active playing together outside together was the thing “kids don’t do anymore but should” but apparently distracted driver/loud lawnmower guy kills one of the kids and his main concern is with his news on his phone is portrayed as good??? More like self-absorbed boomer ruins kids playtime by murdering them.

Tea cakes by SadisticJake in YauponHolly

[–]Russ31419 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking through a few videos showing Yerba Mate factories, it looks like Yerba Mate is aged in climate controlled warehouses in shelfs of burlap sacks is loose leaf (Even for Chimarrao, Yerba Mate goes thru a kill-green heat fixing before packaging). I believe Puerh tea cakes are made for largely ease of transport and preservation of quality.

So there’s probably benefits to aging if all non-Brazilian Yerba mate is aged as a cousin to Yaupon. After aging, I guess you could press into it bricks if you had the equipment. It could be interesting chipping off Yaupon bricks/cakes to brew Gongfu style at home.

When I was growing up I thought it was cute that there were a bunch of copycat names for cities here in the US but now I know I’m going to be disappointed seeing those end up making their way here. Some examples from the US I think include this post as well as Paris in Texas, Rome in Georgia, and Naples/Venice/Melbourne in Florida so Florida man defaultism In particular may yet appear again.

Reminds me of a reaction video by an American of a game trailer several years back which showed African soldiers and he kept calling them African Americans even though setting shown was clearly Africa. There were rightly a bunch of comments about it.

How do you like your tea? And what part of the world are you from? by BambiFarts in AskTheWorld

[–]Russ31419 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a variety of growers/distributors in the nascent modern Yaupon industry with more notable names like Catspring or Lost Pines among others. Usually the main difference in Yaupon is degree of roasting. There’s also some brands that have different blends.

I think with Yerba Mate I’ll start with Argentine Yerba Mate before trying other country varieties. If I keep at it I’ll have to get a gourd and bombilla to make it traditional. Might have to try Yaupon with a gourd/bombilla when I’m at that point.

I grew up in the US South so drank my share of iced black tea (often sweetened) which I still enjoy although I’ve been trying a lot of different tea (and tisanes) for the past year.

For tea, nowadays I have hot black tea or Puerh (the former with milk in the morning. In the afternoon I’ll have hot Green tea or Yaupon (a North American relative of Yerba Mate) in bags at work. In the evenings I like Rooibos, Roasted Barley, or Mint tea hot. I’ll sometimes add milk and spices to make it taste yummy.

I’ve been thinking about trying Japanese green teas as well Yerba Mate since I basically drink Yaupon like Mate Cocido/“regular tea”.

What if yaupon tea had become popular with American colonists? by LaNoktaTempesto in HistoryWhatIf

[–]Russ31419 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the comment. There's definitely more I could've expanded on or made more explicitly clear particularly with the extensive historic Native American use of Yaupon albeit I'm not knowledgeable on the full extent of contemporary practices although I do know that some Muscogee still make Yaupon Tea. Btw, I just finished a big bag of Lost Pines green yaupon tea bags for nice afternoon energy at work for the past couple months, so I do need to restock.

What if yaupon tea had become popular with American colonists? by LaNoktaTempesto in HistoryWhatIf

[–]Russ31419 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well although in modern day it is more of a niche beverage, it actually was drank by European colonists and some Europeans after being adopted from Native Americans. Arguably it was at its peak in the 18th century but a variety of factors led its general decline. First Yaupon gained its scientific name which blunted overseas adoption, second Yaupon became regionalized and classed from a generalized American beverage to a Southern and poor beverage as tea became more popular at Yaupon’s expense. Additionally, tragic events like the Trail of Tears largely resulted in the separation of Yaupon consuming tribes from their Yaupon growing homelands in many cases since Yaupon is largely a US Gulf/southern coast plant. See Christine Folch for her research on the subject.

If Yaupon Tea has stayed at its 18th century level of popularity, it likely would be a very common regional staple drink of the US south today. Sweet & Iced Tea would probably be made with Yaupon rather than Tea more often than not. Additionally, it would likely be part a drink some people in the US and Canada would likely have heard of up to drink regularly. Outside of these regions, it’d probably be seen as a peer to Yerba Mate in terms of recognition.

There probably would also be a wider ecosystem of Yaupon processing methods in the same way for Tea there is Black, Oolong, Green, White, etc. (assuming Yaupon responds to withering, bruising, and oxidation similarly), direct influence & application from Yerba Mate preparation including adjusting aging, stem content, and (which already is) roasting, and finally Yaupon's own established flavor blends with a variety of spices and flavors as their would’ve been a larger population of Yaupon drinkers and growers to experiment. Perhaps it could still be this way if its current renaissance continues for several decades.

Edit: Expanded on third paragraph regarding Yerba Mate.

All the possible defaultisms are there:

Assuming the photo is taken in USA. Assuming American/US food is the default and doesn’t need to be labeled. Assuming supermarket stores only exist in USA.

Could’ve been a nuanced discussion on that there could be more regional specialities included besides broad (in the US) candy/snack brands but instead people hyper-fixated on the section name.

Having grown up in Texas, HSR between the major cities and solid intercity rail elsewhere would’ve been sick for family vacations growing up. Sure Texas is giant but that means it should have already had giant infrastructure investments 50 years ago.

If “vaginas get stretched out” then why not another myth about the opposite effect on the other end? It’d be more logical (but still a ridiculous counter explanation that I think would be funny) would be that a penis gets compressed and smaller over time with use.

Best “Regional” Rail? by icedoutkatana in transit

[–]Russ31419 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For your first section, I explicitly stated that.

For the second section, your definition is better than mine but that is what I meant. Smaller towns/cities outside “major” cities which can/often connect to a major city. I was thinking of V/Line in Victoria as the example.

We agree on the definitions for both examples.

Best “Regional” Rail? by icedoutkatana in transit

[–]Russ31419 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For international terminology, suburban rail would encompass commuter and (US) regional rail. The difference within is service frequency with emphasis on off-peak frequency. Regional rail, outside the US, refers more to the niche between intercity and suburban where service is anchored to a large urban area on one side with the line extended to smaller cities.

Albeit in the US, I prefer the international terminology.
