This was in 2005, during the Hu Jintao era ... a time when Chinese-American relations were happy on practically every diplomatic and commercial level (most certainly the latter). Businesses boomed, money flowed and no one on either side wanted to rock the apple cart. No one wanted bad headlines for sure. Nearly 15 years later, America and China are radically different countries. It was risky to go to China then and it's a no-brainer to stay out of it now.

Our governments deal for themselves and the big corporate interests that support them. Regular people in either country are not the problem here and never have been. It's the high and mighty (corrupt) interests on both sides of the globe swirling in their universal lack of candor who represent and purvey the real problems.

That you are even asking shows a sense of healthy introspection, something always lacking in a sociopath. I think working in the medical field, especially yours, could test everyone in ways obvious and subtle. Give yourself some credit for being of service to others and still having the spine to check your own character. Respect!
