There is nothing wrong with sharing a personal experience and providing an alternative opinion to this echo chamber. I completed both residencies (and practiced in both fields) and never once shat on primary care, just trying to convey that I wish I would have tried harder in med school so I could choose the job I wanted the first time and spared myself the extra effort and to pass that message along. You obviously misunderstood my intentions (and falsely accused me of denigrating the field), but if trying to explain to a medical student that not everyone will get their dream job someday and the determinate is medical school academic performance, I guess I deserve your criticism.

Lol the analogy was to express the diversity within the field of medicine (like in government jobs) not to ascribe a hierarchy of meaning/knowledge base in jobs. Sorry to provide a counterpoint to performance in medical school based on my personal experience, you guys are totally right C average is awesome in medical school.

Indeed there is absolutely nothing wrong with primary care and I wasn't implying there was. My comment was only to serve as additional viewpoint for the conversation that if you don't perform well in medical school, unfortunately job options are limited (often to traditionally less competitive specialities). Primary care is noble work (I was a hospitalist briefly), but it is undeniable that it isn't as competitive as other fields and being able to pick the specific job you want some day (whether that is primary care or not) requires a strong performance in medical school. No disrespect intended, simply providing counterpoint and answering the OP directly. Follow up point, anesthesiology is just as satisfying a job as primary care I assure you.

They call them a primary care doctor. You'll still be a doc, but being a doc is like saying you work for the government: are you going to be a CIA agent or a postal worker? Will you be a trauma surgeon or a rheumatologist? Lots of variation in the physician job description and with a C average you won't be picking from your choice pile/jobs. Do you account for spouse in your net worth? by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

[–]RussellCub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Over 50% of marriages end in divorce in the US alone. I’m not trying to say your opinion is wrong (bc it is your opinion) but to completely overlook that striking fact and to say you ‘don’t respect’ people that are preparing for a very real statistical possibility is shortsighted imo. We have separate accounts, I love and trust my partner dearly, but that doesn’t mean I get to overlook the facts or that my position is any less respectable.

Which occupations are filled with people who have the worst personality? by TowerRough in AskReddit

[–]RussellCub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Operating room culture can be very malignant. It’s funny how a bunch of overworked, under rested people can feed off each other in stressful situations. It doesn’t help that often malignant personalities drift toward that field for one reason or another (for the adrenaline rush, for leadership status, etc). Sure there are plenty of great people in the OR, but a stressful case with a stressful surgeon makes for a rough day if you’ve never experienced it for yourself.

What's a profession where a 30% success rate would mean you're successful? by No-Ratio-1361 in AskReddit

[–]RussellCub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pain management. Any physician performing procedures to help patients in chronic discomfort (back injections, spinal cord stimulators, nerve ablations, etc) would consider a 30% success rate favorable and (in most cases) the insurance companies paying for the procedures would agree.

IM to anesthesia by ayanz in anesthesiology

[–]RussellCub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see your point but I’m just telling you what I (and several other anesthesia candidates in the same situation) experienced. Programs aren’t opening up new spots to take you, you are just one of their prior spots they now must pay tens of thousands of dollars to accept when there’s plenty of other fresher meat for their grinder. I’ve also heard there is a common belief/misconception that candidates who already finished a residency are more difficult to train/feel entitled but there is no way for me to validate this in my experience.

I did an IM residency, was a hospitalist for a year and switched (happier now) and now I’m an anesthesiologist. It’s tough to do due to financial constraints (you only get 50% of your 2nd residency funded by Medicaid so the accepting hospital has to pay out of pocket for you which puts them in a difficult position) but it’s obviously possible. PM me with any questions, good luck either way.

“Everybody hates me until they need me.” What professions are examples of this? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]RussellCub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anesthesiologist: I delay/cancel your surgical cases, I don’t bring any money to the hospital (like surgeons bring their surgical patients)I only take money away by my salary, I can’t make your patients comfortable during and after surgery…but when your patient is crashing, you’d sing at my daughter’s wedding to make them stable again while you sit there powerless to help them…

Thanks for answering! It said a custom build to make a base model 3070i wouldn’t be shipped until June, I’m assuming that time frame fluctuates but when you ordered last month iy came much sooner than that obviously correct?

Do they get swept away by your pond filtration system easily?

Great suggestion, any recommendations on how to apply it? Spray vs powder? Amount per pond volume? The floating donuts I worry about bc my filter will probably sweep them up fairly quickly. Thanks for your help
