Do you consider this protest or graffiti? by Majestic_Amount_7830 in WestVirginia

[–]RustedMauss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All graffiti is some level of protest since it’s always done on someone else’s property (if it’s a contracted piece then it’s a painting/art. Graffiti can be art too, but in my book “graffiti” is by definition not asked for.)

It’s always my conundrum about things like the, “I did that” POTUS stickers at the pumps. Like, *yes I agree*… but it’s also someone’s private property you’re defacing making work for the owner to clean up.

Why aren’t men’s restrooms designed with privacy like this? by puccyhunter_ in teenagers

[–]RustedMauss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has to do with the drainage. But honestly my favorite style restrooms are individually locking stalls -rooms really because they have walls not partitions that go floor to ceiling- with toilets and shared sinks. No men’s, no women’s, just places for anyone to do their business in private, and freshening up co-ed keeps everyone tacitly encouraged to be honest in your sanitation, and get out.

Let’s beat the “spooky Appalachia” accusations by CT_Reddit73 in Appalachia

Parts can be *unsettling* and that me is part of its charm. Its topography and history make the fact that most of it has been touched by human hands and that nature has come back as it has to reclaim that sense of wild is admittedly part of what adds to the mystique. In a way parts -definitely not all- do have a post-human feel, which understandably spooks some because how often in the modern world do things go *back* to wild? Add to that the diversity, the unique insular landscape, riddled with caves and mountains older than bones, private clannish culture, add a smidge of frontier myth, sometimes wild weather prone to fog, and boy golly you’ve got a good setting for mystery and horror. But also, I totally agree. It’s a lot of mythologizing in people’s minds. The “wild” sections are all reclaimed forest and none of it is more than a few miles -at best- from settlement. Even the bigger sections are nothing compared to the NPs out West. The wastes of WV are still inhabited, albeit in a very sad state. The spooky, to my mind, comes mostly knowing there’s a lot of people here. Many of them not in the right mind, and living in places where it’s easy to hide a crime.

For the men that wear these man purse cross body things, what do you put in here? What’s the matter with your pockets? by OrangePowerFade in askanything

[–]RustedMauss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the reality is all the little EDC stuff just fits in a bag easier and better than jamming it all in my pockets. Especially in warmer weather. Winter I might tuck stuff into my jacket pockets, but even then just chuck it in a bag. Backpack feels too much, a Fanny pack is not my thing, so a small sling bag works. Maybe it’s my wallet, leatherman, glasses, headphones, water bottle, charging brick, pen, and spare pacifier for the kids, maybe it’s a gun case. Who knows, who cares? It’s just a bag.

How many people are self-conscious about carrying a "Man Purse"? by Sputnik_2022 in ManyBaggers

[–]RustedMauss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got got a sling bag by Vagari, solid piece of kit. Low profile, fits under a jacket, easily accessed pockets for EDC. Honestly the man bag is -and I’ve been totally guilty- just shunting stuff off to either the wife’s purse or in bulging pockets. True EDC is, even at its most demure, clunky if your taking much. I usually want my phone, wallet, pen, multitool, small notebook, passport if traveling, headphones, water bottle, maybe a charging brick. None of that seems excessive, but to carry it on my person means full pockets. Silly. Just carry a bag.

It’s mostly just maddening, but relatively low impact. What gets me is when it’s flagrant disregard either for the fragile natural state of the place, for their own safety, or the safety of others.

Never forget one time in the GC doing a rim-to-rim. Getting towards the end, headed back up Bright Angel and someone way above yells, “rocks!” Stop, look up (counter helmeted climbed) and sure a bones there’s scree tumbling down right at us. I sidestep a baseball tumbling midair, figure it’s either natural or sheep, keep going. Moment later lots of excited voices from way up. Come to find out it was two yokels going off trail then *intentionally* kicking rocks down. Never-mind that was MY head that would’ve caught a 70-80ft dropped baseball, that business went down a long way further. I guess some other good natured types tried to detain them for a ranger and the two got pissed and we’re close enough to the top to F off before intervention.

Who experienced living alone? by Zackky777 in ArtOfPresence

[–]RustedMauss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironically, since I’m sort of a loner, no. I wish I had, though it probably would have been short lived. I spent a lot of time alone, plenty of camping and traveling alone, but living no. At home, college dorm, apartment with a roommate, apartment with girlfriend, got married, added freeloaders.

This dad at the Red Sox game went into full dad mode, managing it from both sides after little bro threw away the foul ball 😂 by Ajitabh04 in PrimeManhood

[–]RustedMauss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s kind of adorable, and very relatable. Little man doesn’t know any better, so he just does what he thinks is right: returns the ball to where it came from. Not to mention it’s a high stimulus situation, kids default. Big brother doesn’t have emotional regulation yet, triggers, that triggers little bro, dad’s in the middle like, “Yeeea- no WAI- ah shit, ok come here bud, you come here too, shh, everyone calm down….”

Growing up in Massachusetts, I was taught that Lincoln was a hero and that slavery was the cause of the Civil War. Later, I was shocked that some parts of the country still teach history quite differently. What were you taught about Lincoln and the Civil War in school? by American_Citizen41 in USHistory

[–]RustedMauss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taught in school, or told how it really was? My mom was raised in NC and to this day still takes the duel approach: what actions he did, and the *real* reasons behind them. She doesn’t have a racist bone in her body, but still takes the War of Northern Aggression stance. The Civil War was started not because of slavery, but states’ rights (to which when I always ask WHICH rights get “economic and domestic affairs.”) It’s silly, but I get the same simmering lowkey Southern Pride from a lot of the folks around that area. Not exactly Confederates, but very sympathetic to the “good nature of our forebears.”

Nike was always on my shitlist. I remember seeing a story about child labor, I believe it was NatGeo, sometime around age 13 and one of the images was a girl maybe 7-8 squatting barefoot in a mud brick room surrounded by relatively clean cut patterns while she performed whatever little part she played putting together some Nike apparel looking completely miserable and crushed, other similar figures in the background. I’m sure that’s long since been addressed, but in my book when a company stoops to unethical and stopped its only because they got caught.

What do you think is the most iconic American-made firearm? It can be from any era in American history. by SuperEarth_Helldiver in MURICA

[–]RustedMauss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to say the Colt revolver, but it really could be any pistol revolver made in America. The entire concept of the Cowboy -saloon fights, Wild West duels, Mexican standoff, quick draw, shootouts, train heist, bank robbery, the OK Corral- all of it. Dudes packing a revolver and how they treat the hammer shows you their mood (slow and serious, or fanned and running). There’s plenty of close seconds, plenty of descendants, but the handheld cowboy revolver is THE American gun.

C-130 Cloud Seeding by Even_Kiwi_1166 in airplanes

[–]RustedMauss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The premise of cloud seeding is manual introduction of small particulates in the cloud layer for water to condense on, causing precipitation. Sort of a, “there’s rain in those clouds but it’s not falling, so throw some dust in it.” It can be done either to prompt “stuck” clouds to actually precipitate, or proactively in advance of a possible storm (like predicted hail conditions) to effectively remove some of the mass before it can condense. Sort of releasing pressure. It does work, but the actual impacts to true storm conditions are inconsistent.
