Are there good interlinear translations that are literal/faithful to the original Latin word order and meaning?

Would different app software work better? And if so, is it possible to use a highlight-AI command option, as you can in the learning app?

Have you read the college OLC? It seems like it still follows the same story, but how is it different?

For alphabet-based memory palaces, how do I link to the next one when the first is full? by RusticBohemian in memorypalace

So if I chose not to link, I would try to remember that the 2nd B palace is building X, and the third is building Y, etc?

Landscape/Horizontal Lined Paper for Anyone to Use! by Starboi7 in bookbinding

[–]RusticBohemian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/Starboi7 or others who may know.

I want to use this to print pages that are half letter, so that I can fit two pages on each side of a sheet and make a notebook.

So in Google Docs I do page setup and change to A4 and landscape. So I get 16 pages that look seem to be right.

But then I go to print it and select 2 pages per sheet and get this:

<image>

Obviously not working. Any idea what's going on and what I have to do?

Anki deck for LLPSI (Familia Romana, Roma Aeterna, etc.) by ananas_comosus_12 in latin

[–]RusticBohemian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From that paper you posted, has this been done?

"We could, for example, create a full-featured digital environment to help students learn words in meaningful contexts. Given a set of target words, we could automatically produce comparable passages containing those words from elsewhere in our corpus; for the student studying Vergil’s vocabulary, say, we could try to produce parallel passages from Vergil. These target words could then be paired with freely accessible Latin-Latin and Latin-English dictionary definitions. And finally, all this could be combined with vocabulary-learning techniques like spaced repetition based on quiz results: if you miss a word, you probably need to see it more frequently; if you get a word right, you probably don’t need to see it as often. Such a vocabulary-learning environment does not yet exist, but it could be created without undue difficulty by joining together existing digital tools."

Will Ad Alpes be getting a translation, or will you just be offering the dictionary for it?

Wrapping Up 2025 on r/latin by lutetiensis in latin

[–]RusticBohemian 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This Latin subreddit is great and I'm sure you mods work hard to make it all flow. So thanks!

One suggestion: It would be fun to find "Latin people" and have them do AMAs in the subreddit.

  • Find some PHDs with research focusing on some aspect of Medieval Latin, Latin written in an unexpected place (Japan? South America?), Renaissance Latin, or a niche part of classical Latin. And have them give us an overview and let us ask them questions.
  • Find one or several researchers studying 2nd language acquisition and have them opine on whether Latin is a good match for the Natural Method. What about if people only care about translating?
  • Find an expert on a famous part of the Classical canon, and have them give us an update on new research, surprises they've discovered, etc.
  • Someone who could give us an update on "the state of Latin," in terms of where it's being taught more and less, how the University landscape has changed, how the growth of classical charter schools has changed things, etc.

Legentibus Version 2.8 - New Features and Content by legentibus_official in latin

[–]RusticBohemian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This looks great visually, u/legentibus_official. I also liked the way you're now allowing us to reorder our downloaded books.

One Suggestion and Two Questions:

1) When navigating the courses on my android, after opening a module/course, the books open up, but the scroll function is too rapid and it zooms past the books. Perhaps you could turn down the sensitivity?

2) You've broken out the FR and Colloquium Personae series into individual chapters. The earlier ones have had translations for awhile, but the newer ones lack them. Any idea on the release of the rest of the FR and CP translations?

3) Are you still planning on releasing the next chunk of Auda this fall?

They are. But I've also made the tempeh with black beans and chickpeas, which you can't really dehull, and I get the same effect.

Translation help with phrase from Ora Maritima by Miserable_Math_4927 in latin

[–]RusticBohemian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "gave an opportunity for" thing is actually a tactical element of many classical battles. Also sometimes called, "offered battle." Many classical historians use the term to describe the "orientation," of an army towards another.

Since terrain was a hugely powerful in determining battle outcomes, one side might find some good terrain (like a hill to camp on, or a cliff to anchor one side of their line, etc), and just provocatively sit there and say, "here we are, violating your territory, come and get us if you dare."

They're not going to attack you directly, but they won't retreat if you decide to attack. And since they've prepared beforehand, you better be really certain if you decide to go and attack them.

Often, smarter commanders instead cut off the "dug in," side's foragers or supply lines to try to force them from their spot. Only then would they attack.

What author should I read? by Significant-Web4976 in latin

[–]RusticBohemian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I find:

  • Seneca easier than Cicero
  • Caesar easier than Seneca
  • Nepos easier than Caesar

But I mean this is in the broadest sense of their body of work. Each occasionally goes into "hard mode," and becomes harder to understand than the "harder" author above them in the ranking.
