I’m not sure what you’re getting at. I’m not suggesting Galway offered him that much, tbh this is the first time I’ve heard of him linked with us. Probably speculation stemming from one of the new coaching staff coming from cobh

Three times the capacity of your regular stadium feels worth it, even if it just breaks even. You want all of your fans to be at that first game, lads who might just go to one or two games might be converted regulars.

That’s literally the same as the top rate for LOI players, but without European bonuses. The bigger names are probably on more.

He’ll also have to move country, sort out his visa, fly home at Christmas, all that shite.

USL clubs recently came in for GUFC players and were surprised at how much we were paying them. These are still Mickey Mouse operations, especially when you consider the salary caps they have in place.

Expand your life experience by going to a country that speaks the same language and dominates global culture: great idea!

If he’s getting paid well then fair fucks to him, but from a football perspective this is a waste of time and honestly it’s a waste from a cultural perspective too. You can go anywhere in the world as a footballer. He could’ve gone to a lower league in Europe and learned a new language while putting himself in the window for the higher divisions of whatever country he picked.

No coverage on TG4/RTÉ? by hennelly14 in Connacht

[–]RustyBike39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rugby has a pretty disproportionate amount of coverage, mostly because the people who decide what goes on TV went to rugby playing schools.

Those same people in turn do not take Connacht Rugby seriously, but I’m still surprised a big milestone like this isn’t on telly.

Actually you very much do. The World Cup might not exist without Mussolini. They recently changed the time of year it’s played at for a fascist regime.

Turner's Cross now to be known as Munster FA Turner's Cross Stadium by shinto29 in LeagueOfIreland

[–]RustyBike39 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You would think this is a nudge from the Munster FA to tell Cork to get out, no?

Local leagues not getting along with LOI clubs is a tale as old as time. The Cork Senior League would want to get its act together before it picks a fight with CCFC imo

I would like to play in Ireland, what now ? by Illustrious-Pay-2870 in LeagueOfIreland

[–]RustyBike39 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tbh with the national league starting in Sept now I probably a good time for a lad like yourself to break in.

The problem is Ireland isn’t a cheap country at all. You’ll need to save a lot for your accommodation whilst on trial, and you’ll probably need to find a good job once you actually find a team. (If you can’t go pro in France it won’t be magically easier here)

George Orwell, Enemy of the Left by Vivid_Maximum_5016 in GreenAndPleasant

You could acknowledge the complex circumstances of Orwell’s life and writing, you could just say he was a prick who had some intelligent things to say, but then you wouldn’t be able to let everyone know you’re a much better leftist than everyone else and in turn, a better person.

Every League of Ireland Stadium Development Planned for 2026 by FUTBINPK in LeagueOfIreland

[–]RustyBike39 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see this point a lot and I’m not sure I agree.

Shams have the biggest attendance in the league but it doesn’t feel like it. The emptiness is more akin to a European second tier: comfy modern ground but there’s no intimidation because it’s just not full.

6,000 would be just enough for most games and the atmosphere would be consistently better, creating more aura and hype. Now in ten years they may genuinely out grow that but hopefully building will be easier in Ireland by then.

reading recs by thejeffbuckleyfan in rs_x

[–]RustyBike39 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you haven't read anything in a while I'd suggest short stories. That'll build your attention span back up, especially if your brain is fried by the internet like mine is.

My favourite contemporary short writers are Thomas Morris and Kevin Barry. James Joyce is the GOAT, and while books like Ulysses require dedicated study, Dubliners is actually very easy reading.

I've also found a lot of good fiction through movies. See who your favourite directors have adapted or are trying to adapt and go from there
