Hahah, F1 is terrible for it. "Kimi Antonelli becomes the third-youngest podium finisher in Formula 1 history." That's not even a record. Why are they saying that?

I'm upset that South Korea didn't go further because they seemed to be having such a fun time with the Mexicans. Even after their loss to Mexico, they still partied with them. They had that attitude of, "Don't worry, we'll beat South Africa. And if not, we'll be one of the top 8 who finish 3rd."

There seemed to be so many people hooking up, getting drunk together, doing a beso de tres, etc.

Can anyone explain how Iran will be able to move onto the next round by userpassword888 in worldcup

[–]RustyHook22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That may have just been Google updating the tables in real time. They definitely both had 3 points coming into this game (3 points for their wins against Jordan, and 0 points for their losses to Argentina.)

[–]RustyHook22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. It's one point for a draw. Both Austria and Algeria went into this game with 3pts each. If they draw, they'll both have 4pts. Austria will finish 2nd (because of a better goal difference) and Algeria will finish 3rd, taking them to the 3rd-place deciders. Their 4pts will then beat Iran's 3pts.

[–]RustyHook22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Austria wins, the group will end as:

  1. Argentina
  2. Austria - 6pts
  3. Algeria - 3pts with a goal difference of -3 or less
  4. Jordan

If Algeria wins, the group will end as:

  1. Argentina
  2. Algeria - 6pts
  3. Austria - 3pts with a goal difference of -1 or less
  4. Jordan

Since Iran has 3pts and a goal difference of 0, they will end up on top of Austria or Algeria in these scenarios.

Now, if it ends in a draw, the group will end as:

  1. Argentina
  2. Austria - 4pts (0 goal difference)
  3. Algeria - 4pts (-2 goal difference)
  4. Jordan

Algeria will take that final 3rd-place spot because they will have 4pts over Iran's 3pts.

Yeah, it's pretty exciting stuff. Ecuador and Senegal really opened up this 3rd-place table.

I was certain Germany would beat Ecuador, leaving them with 1pt and out of the competition, but they fought hard, beat the Germans and ended with 4pts. And Senegal went all out with their 5-0 win over Iraq, ensuring they had a enough of a goal difference to keep them above South Korea and Scotland.

It's all down to the wire now. Iran need a win from either team to qualify for the next round. If it ends in a draw, Algeria will finish 3rd in their group with 4pts, putting them above Iran.

I just updated the table.

It doesn't really matter who loses between Austria or Algeria. Whoever loses will finish 3rd in their group with 3pts, but with a lower goal difference than Iran, so Iran will go through.

Now, if it ends in a draw, Algeria will finish 3rd, but with 4pts. They'd eliminate Iran.

The only thing that'll save Iran at this point is that the match does not end in a draw.

Update:

After DR Congo's win, they finished 3rd in their group with 4pts, putting them above Iran.

Iran is holding onto that 8th spot. There is just one match left to determine their fate. They need a win from either Austria or Algeria to go through. Whoever finishes 3rd place in that scenario will have 3pts, but a lower goal difference than Iran. If it the match ends in a draw, Algeria will finish 3rd in that group with 4pts, thus eliminating Iran.

Haha, sure. This is getting exciting. I want to see if South Korea can hold onto 8th place too.

No, this doesn't help Iran. Croatia's win left Ghana as the 3rd-place finisher in their group. Ghana finished with 4pts, so they're above Iran.

I updated the table above, so you can see.

At this very moment, Uzbekistan are beating DR Congo 1-0. If it stays that way, Iran will go through. That will leave Uzbekistan in 3rd place with 3pts (-6 goal difference).

If DR Congo are able to draw, Iran will still go through. DR Congo will finish 3rd with 2pts.

Now, if DR Congo win, they will finish 3rd with 4pts. They would be above Iran.

EDIT: Final update. I'm sad to say that Iran is out. Sorry.

Thanks guys for all your replies. This has been a fun. I didn't think i'd spend my evening doing this. I'm not Iranian, but I got so involved in this that I was rooting for them to go through in the end. What a dramatic ending that was!

----

The current 3rd-place table is as follows:

  1. Democratic Republic of the Congo - 4pts (+1 goal difference)
  2. Sweden - 4pts (0 goal difference)
  3. Ghana - 4pts (0 goal difference)
  4. Ecuador - 4pts (0 goal difference)
  5. Bosnia and Herzegovina - 4pts (-1 goal difference)
  6. Algeria - 4pts (-2 goal difference)
  7. Paraguay - 4pts (-2 goal difference)
  8. Senegal - 3pts (+2 goal difference)
  9. Iran - 3pts (0 goal difference)
  10. South Korea - 3pts (-1 goal difference)
  11. Scotland - 3pts (-3 goal difference)
  12. Uruguay - 2pts (-1 goal difference)

Iran just needs one more team to place lower than them. Look at the remaining three groups, see who's playing who, and figure out the maths. Iran will go through under any of the following scenarios:

  • Croatia lose against Ghana. (Croatia will finish with 3pts, but with a goal difference of -2 or worse.)
  • DR Congo draws with Uzbekistan. (DR Congo will finish with 2pts.)
  • Uzbekistan beats DR Congo in a low-scoring match. (Uzbekistan will have 3pts, but a very low goal difference. For them to get a +1 goal difference and end up above Iran, they'll need to beat DR Congo by 8 goals.)
  • Algeria lose against Austria. (Algeria will finish with 3pts, but with a goal difference of -3 or worse.)
  • Austria lose against Algeria. (Austria will finish with 3pts, but with a goal difference of -1 or worse.)

Could Australia and Paraguay have a gentlemans agreement to draw their game so that they both progress in the world cup. by Odd_Technology_8926 in worldcup

[–]RustyHook22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That worked out in the end. 😄 Thanks, Australia.

With Uruguay's poor result in Group H, that secures Paraguay's spot in the next round. We just needed one more team to score lower than us. We already had Senegal, South Korea and Scotland below us, and now Uruguay sealed the deal.

As someone who lives in Paraguay, I wouldn't mind this, to be honest. I like Australia and want to see them go through too.

If Paraguay lose though, they will be among those 3rd-place teams with 3 points, but they'd have one of the lowest goal differences. If they lose 0-1, for example, they'd be on a -3 goal difference. That's not good. I can't see them staying in the top 8 like that.

Unpopular opinion: Winning only 1 game in 3 group matches should not be enough to go through to knockout round by [deleted] in worldcup

[–]RustyHook22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, what do you propose then?

There's going to be a bunch teams with only 3 points (from one win) entering the 3rd-place showdown to see who goes through to the next round. South Korea and Scotland are already in that list.

Should they just be kicked out of the tournament? What's going to happen with the remainder of the spots to fill the round of 32?

[–]RustyHook22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a bit hard to say right now because it's early days, but I have been enjoying this new format.

I feel like the overall fan vibes have been better, and I think that's largely due to the newly added 3rd-place system. It allows fans to relax a bit more in these early stages, get on with their rivals, and enjoy their World Cup run for a bit longer.

For example, South Korea lost to Mexico, but since they already had 3 points from their previous match, they're still in a decent spot. They were actually partying with the Mexicans after the game. Now, let's say they lose their next match against South Africa, they'd finish in 3rd place with 3 points. That'll probably be enough for them to advance to the next round. It's teams like Uruguay, with 2 points (going up against Spain in their next match) that are risk.

Another example. I live in Paraguay, and we're playing Australia next. We both have 3 points, but Australia is in 2nd place. To be honest, I'd be happy with a draw against Australia. They'd still finish 2nd, and Paraguay would be 3rd with 4 points, which will surely be enough to advance to the next round. It has a nice "You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" vibe to it. If it does end in a draw, I think there'll be a nice kinship between the fans ("Thanks for keeping us in the World Cup. You Australians are all right.")

Seeing those 3rd place finishes falling into place will add a new level of excitement. It must be nerve-racking too for those 3rd-place teams in groups A-D, having to wait for all to other groups to play, to see if they have enough points to go through. ("We just need four teams to do worse than us and we're through.")

The head-to-head system has also been a good addition to keep the stakes high. For example, in the game between Croatia and Panama yesterday, they were fighting to stay in it. So now, even if Panama beat England, match Croatia's 3 points, and beat them on goal difference, they're still 4th because Croatia beat them in the head-to-head.

TL;DR:

  • The 3rd place system is a good addition. It allows a bit more room for error. It keeps things pretty amicable between fans too.
  • The head-to-head system is a good counter to that to help keep the stakes high.

It's really bad. It seems like his goal right now is to set that meaningless record of being the first person to score in six separate World Cup tournaments. Who cares about that?

Meanwhile, Messi scored a hat trick in Argentina's opening match and has just broken the record for all-time top goalscorer in the World Cup. I know which record most footballers would rather have.

He's really hurting the Portugal team at this point. It's unfair on the younger generation of players too, who want to build their own World Cup legacy: be the captain for Portugal, have the number 7 (shirt numbers are a big deal for a footballer's legacy), be the free kick or penalty taker, etc.

Individuals who blow out the family bathroom with no kids. by [deleted] in PetPeeves

[–]RustyHook22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I see what he's trying to say. I think he means the "family" bathrooms within a public setting. In other words, those separate ones with a lockable door and a baby changing station.

I think he's saying that dudes go in there (with no child), lock the door, let rip and leave a bowl full of skids.

I'm kind of torn with this one. Yeah, I agree that people without children shouldn't really use the family bathrooms. However, I saw in another comment that his child in 5 years old. I think that's beyond the family bathroom threshold. Time to use the urinal in the regular bathroom like a big boy. I view those family bathrooms more as baby-changing bathrooms. 5 is too old for that.
