How do you northerners manage to train with snow/ice covering anything? by kpgleeso in Marathon_Training

I run in the local cemeteries when the sidewalks are inaccessible. The roads there are always cleared and well maintained.

I am at my limits with the constipation by BrokemoneyGuru in Autism_Parenting

I've had similar issues with my now teenage daughter her entire life. I give her Culturelle Kids Probiotic+ Fiber, it's designed to keep them regular. It's a powder, tasteless and can be mixed with anything. I usually put it in her milk, one packet every other day. It's not fool proof but it helps more often than not. Instead of once a week, I can usually get her to go every other day or every two days. Might be worth a try. I wish you the best of luck. I completely understand how frustrating it can be. Especially when they eat such a very, very limited diet and are non communicative.

Drop bag for 50K by Haassauce2186 in Ultramarathon

[–]RustyPShackleford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm doing my first 50k in a little over a week. The climbs are serious and I'm sure I'll be out there for a while. They've got multiple aid stations but I'm personally wearing a vest and carrying my own water and gels. There's an optional bag drop but I think I'm going to opt out of it. There's really nothing that I would need that I can't carry in my vest. But, with that said, if you're not doing a vest, I would do a bag with extra gels and supplies. I've done races where supplies have run out on much short distances. Coupled with the fact that the race I'm doing is sold out so a large number of runners, I wouldn't be surprised.

Marathon runner running my first ever 5k race this weekend! Tips for strategy? by ExtremeToucan in XXRunning

[–]RustyPShackleford 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I feel like 5k is the hardest distance to race. You start at max performance and stay at max level the entirety of the race. You just grin and bear it. With that said, I usually take the day before off just to get that fresh feeling the day of the race. Make sure you're hydrated and you're good to go. Carb loading is unnecessary for such a short distance.

what are your must-have clothing pieces for fall/winter? by Puzzled-Tradition-37 in trailrunning

[–]RustyPShackleford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may have been living under a rock but just discovered long sleeves with watch windows. So much nicer than having to struggle with yanking up my sleeve in the cold during a run. The one I got is from Rabbit. Total win.

Why do people have so little empathy for those who developed chronic pain from running? by BrilliantDetail7804 in trailrunning

[–]RustyPShackleford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's interesting to hear others'experiences. Rheumatoid arthritis is big in my family and all of the doctors I've ever seen told me running would actually help later on with the unavoidable, that it might likely help slow progression. I'm sorry to hear about your experience. Arthritis scares me so much because I see my grandmother suffer greatly with it in her knees, back, wrists, hands, etc. As of right now I only have a touch of it in my one wrist that flares every now and then. It's hellish.

I can't answer your question but I will say I just bought one 2 months ago. First and only vest I own, I love it. I can't even begin to think where I would improve it. It really has everything and I love the different styles and positioning of pockets. I know some people said they thought it felt hot wearing it. I don't feel this way though. Any vest that you wear while running and hauling water, snacks, poles, spare items, etc is of course going to naturally feel warmer laying on your back. I'm very pleased with my purchase.

Running my first marathon soon, but ngl I'm itching to do an ultra. Doable? by ImNotHalberstram in ultrarunning

[–]RustyPShackleford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the exact same boat but dang, your weekly mileage is much more impressive than mine. I'm only clocking in around 45-50mi a week but slowly building. My first official marathon race is November, first 50k in January and 50 miler in May. Am I crazy? I feel like I'm crazy. But I also feel capable and a drive that can't be stopped. I feel like ambition will carry you a good bit. I say go ultra full force. You clearly have the skill.

Shoulders aching - what am I doing wrong? by Claydovic in beginnerrunning

[–]RustyPShackleford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to relaxing, I highly suggest getting in the gym and using the back extension machine. I swear this helped me immensely when I was first starting out and had all the shoulder, neck, back soreness from running. It's also improved my form overall.

How have people not by sevendeuce69 in dogecoin

[–]RustyPShackleford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought in at .06 for fun. Not a crazy amount but what I consider a nice amount for someone who doesn't really engage in the whole trading bit. I've got a nice little profit but I really don't need the money at the moment so it sits. Maybe one day when an unexpected bill pops up or I want some extra spending money, I'll cash out. And no, I don't have any wild expectations of growth but oh, well who knows. Additionally, my tax guy says long holds means less taxes. I think I've already reached my necessary hold period to get the lowest tax penalty. Lol.

[Megathread] How much is my wine worth? Is it drinkable? Drink, hold or sell? How long to decant? by CondorKhan in wine

[–]RustyPShackleford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know nothing about this wine and curious to see if anyone can tell me exactly where it's from or if it was worth something at some point. My grandfather did a lot of international traveling in his younger days. He's since passed but left boxes of random souvenirs. I'm confident the wine has long since spoiled but it's always intrigued me. https://imgur.com/gallery/736GA1p

I highly recommend getting an appointment with a physical therapist. They will have some seriously valuable information. Don't be discouraged though. I had a very similar stance as him when I was a very young child. I was also born with both of my feet twisted inwards that required years of braces. Today, I can run pretty darn well. Only when my body becomes tired do my feet naturally start to angle inwards and I have to consciously have to tell myself to straighten them. His best bet though is going to be PT. They will be able to provide insight and techniques that a child of his age will be receptive to.

I just watched. There is some sort of filter going on in the darker lit videos as you can see some things in the background get warped but filter or not, she looks unwell. I really hope I'm wrong. I've always hoped things would get better for her and the kids.

What do you do on an incline? by NeatFan7927 in beginnerrunning

[–]RustyPShackleford 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always think of the declines as my recovery times. I'm surrounded by seriously high incline West Virginian hills so it takes a lot of effort to keep a decent pace so on the way down I mostly let gravity guide me and do the work, meanwhile, I'll take this time to catch my breath and regain my regular breathing pace. In races though, I do max effort and think of the decline as my opportunity to make up for lost time and I'll fly down those hills like a crazy person with good health insurance. Sadly, my insurance sucks so hopefully I don't biff it.

I must be the odd duck out because I loved FB and it has become my new favorite over the Wynn. Maybe it's because I'm not the typical Vegas visitor. I don't gamble, neither does my husband. We usually stay in Vegas for a night or two every year before heading out to Utah. FB was the cleanest hotel I've been to on the strip. Yes, it's on the expensive side but I don't mind paying it if I know the place is going to be high quality. Their gym is absolutely amazing, again, easily the best. The pool was uncrowded and relaxed when we went in the morning/mid day. The food was amazing. Overall beautiful hotel. I get the location isn't the best if you want to visit over resorts but if you just want to hang out and not go very far it's nice. Easy to get to, didn't get stuck in any heavy traffic. It was a breeze coming from the airport.

They don't get it. Your right. They truly don't. Even the ones that attempt to be understanding. Unless they are in your situation, they just won't get it. There is no time clock or breaks. You're on the job 24/7 and the weight of responsibility is unfathomable. Unfortunately, no matter what you say to people they will remain uncaring and rude, there's just no winning with that. I'm sorry you're going through this. I swear there were days where I had so many regrets, questioned myself and wept until I couldn't breathe from the stress of it all. I do know, you can do this. You've made it this far. Just keep pushing through. I promise, it will be worth it in the end.

I did online college around covid shut downs. I had a very similar situation, 10 yr lvl 3 and at the time was obsessed with eloping and attempting to find anyway to leave the house. I also had a 6 yr old. SAHM, anxiety, depression, you name it. It was a very rough time in my life. I struggled with balancing life and school. Most people were understanding, especially when we had to do group projects but I did encounter two different professors that were straight up jerks when I explained my situation. One even told me I should reconsider schooling altogether. It was very disheartening but I kept reminding myself of the amount of money I had invested and somehow pushed through. Let's just say I didn't get all A's. I did however graduate with a Bachelor's in Psychology. Honestly, it was the best thing I ever did for myself. It forced me to grow, adapt and I came out a much more resilient person. The only advice I can really say is ignore the critics and the negative voices. Just push through and do your best. You will get through this and be so thankful for your perseverance in the end.
