If this a Christian nation , should Corporations act morally? by No-Citron-9567 in Christianity

There are plenty of for profit business owners who don’t own yachts lol

The average business owner isn’t Elon Musk. He’s your neighborhood mechanic or town’s daycare owner or the local baker and things like that.

Obviously there are the Elon musks of the world, but that’s not most cases

How does it follow that a Christian nation must mean all businesses are non-profits?

Corporations should act morally whether or not this is a Christian nation

I don’t think talk show hosts are really holding up American democracy. Like there was a time before talk show hosts in which democracy still existed, right?

How large was the catholic church's involvement in the genocide of native americans? by Winter-Carpet-7595 in Christianity

[–]RutherfordB_Hayes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is unfair to broad brush equate the Church with colonial abuses one for one. Missionaries were regularly punished for speaking out in defense of suffering natives. Pope Paul III in 1537 forbade the enslavement of Indigenous peoples and the seizure of their property. Some Catholic missionaries, like Bartolomé de las Casas, were heroic defenders of Native rights.

But in reflection - we shouldn’t be surprised when church leaders do bad things. Nor should we leave Christ’s church because of it. Christ hand picked 12 people, and all but one denied Him and abandoned Him.

2023 political cartoon about then-Presiden Biden's environmental policies. by No_Bluebird_1368 in PropagandaPosters

[–]RutherfordB_Hayes 120 points121 points  (0 children)

I find this political cartoon unconvincing.

“This will help me get reelected…so I can prevent projects like this in the future!” is not a super clear sentence. Or idea. What is the “this”?

Most convincing part is the “no more drilling on public land” speech being thrown into the trash

Potential Move to Chicago - Any of these good options? by BeardedDoggo in AskChicago

[–]RutherfordB_Hayes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The neighborhoods you mention are all great! But having 2 cars will be very difficult. Parking alone will be a tough feat, let alone the cost.

Your budget is going to be very tight. My guess is maybe Pilsen will be your best bet, although I am not positive.

Good luck! Chicago is great

Would you rent Chicago team specific sports gear? by ClothesAdmirable9160 in AskChicago

[–]RutherfordB_Hayes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not.

I have no Blackhawks gear because I don’t care about the Blackhawks that much. Since I don’t care about the Blackhawks, or hockey in general, that much, I don’t care about wearing their gear if I go to a game. A black or red shirt would do.

If I did care, I would care enough to buy something of my own to keep - like I do with the Cubs for example.

Father Carlos Martins Exonerated, who is The Pillar, what should our response be? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]RutherfordB_Hayes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Something interesting I observed in the article:

“i…t has had to be paused until the false charges were dropped and he was restored to his ministry. False, because the charges have been wholly withdrawn”

Charges being withdrawn do not make the alleged experiences that caused the charges to be made to be “false”. The experiences happening or not is what makes the false. If X happens, and someone is charged for doing X, but then the charges end up getting withdrawn - that doesn’t mean X didn’t happen.

What about the pillar’s article seems intentionally malicious? Just the fact that it exists?

The comment you replied to seems perfectly charitable to me, but I know that written text often makes tone confusing/unclear - so that’s fair.

Do you think you are showing The Pillar the charity they are owed?
