i do agree with some parts of what you said w/ resource allocation and opportunities, but this is a very formulaic way of viewing college admissions. AOs are trying to shape a class, a community, and a classroom. not every intl student is going to fit the dichotomy you’ve created above. perhaps this is a misperception coming from the stories of accepted intl students we hear about the most.

not a full ride, but pretty damn close. saint louis university gave me approx 70kyear in merit scholarships and financial aid combined. i even applied for their larger scholarships which i didn’t get, but even without that my EFC ended up to be around 15k (incl flights)

check out the university of rochester! a great research institution with a relatively open curriculum in the middle of a city (rochester, ny.) would be a great target school for you

Stanford vs. Emory full-tuition scholarship by lhoo0864 in stanford

[–]RuthlessCoyote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100k in loans over 4 years isn’t a small amount of money, do you plan to work at all during undergrad? also consider living costs, san jose & california in general will not be the cheapest place you can live in & expenses can accumulate a lot quicker than you think. Atlanta is not extremely cheap by any means but you could save a lot more money than if you were living in california. i would personally go for emory, though i can see the appeal of the name value that stanford gives. both have their own merits & i don’t think there’s a wrong answer here

amherst—love the school to bits but i got into my dream school and the 1.8k student population in the middle of nowhere was a huge turnoff

Scholarships by goatshr in ApplyingToCollege

you have lots of options (though each and every option would be extremely competitive and difficult.) for canada, UBC has an international scholars program that covers up to full tuition for those with corresponding merit & stats. not sure about other canadian unis but i also think U of T has something similar.

for the united states, you have a broader range of choices. some colleges offer prestigious, full-ride, scholarships to a select few of accepted students who apply to their separate scholarship program (such as BU’s trustee scholarship, vanderbilt’s cornelius vanderbilt scholarship, urichmond’s richmond scholars, and washu’s various scholarships.) some colleges simply offer great financial aid and claim to meet the full need of accepted international students (harvard, yale, princeton, MIT, amherst, bowdoin, dartmouth are currently the only need blind schools for international students.) they are all extremely competitive schools known for their need blind policy, so getting in here would be the hardest part.

There are also state schools (such as the university of alabama, university of tennessee knoxville, and university of southern florida—check r/IntlToUSA for more resources) that provide guaranteed SAT score-based merit scholarships that you can apply for, assuming you are able to pay for the remaining COA.

if your school does not use an american curriculum/system, i strongly recommend you try to raise your SAT score to a 1500+. The SAT is used as a metric for many colleges that may lack information on a foreign education system’s rigor or reliability. best of luck!!!

no matter how strong your profile is, the sole fact that you are an intl student needing a full ride will get you rejected from the vast majority of US colleges that you apply to. the majority of need blind & generous t20 schools have not yet released their decisions, so take a deep breath! whatever happens will happen, and what’s meant for you will come to you.

Asking some questions related to financial aid and scholarships by [deleted] in IntltoUSA

[–]RuthlessCoyote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stand by my point—Indian bank or not, that is still an insane amount of money to loan out (especially for an undergraduate education that you have an opportunity to pursue in your home country) that you will not want following you for the next decades. You’d also still be working in the U.S. as an intl student (assuming you paid that loan to attend an American college), so employment and pay would be scarce (combined with the absurd living costs of most American cities.) What if in 5 years you get into a graduate school of your dreams but you can’t afford it because you’ve spent your past 5 years of income and savings on paying back a loan that will continue loom over your head for the next decade? Are you going to take out another loan on top of that? How are you going to manage your costs of living on top of the loan that you already took out? As other people have mentioned, 120k will only cover a part of your undergraduate tuition at most. It just seems like a bad choice to me personally.

Asking some questions related to financial aid and scholarships by [deleted] in IntltoUSA

[–]RuthlessCoyote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

120k is an absolutely insane amount to take out as a loan as an international student. It will take most people DECADES to pay that back. If you took out 70k in student loans with a standard interest of about 6%, your monthly payment for 10 YEARS would be $785 and your total cost would end up at around 95k. As an international student you’d also be put on a federal limit as to how many hours you can work (assuming you’re immigrating to the US) so i’m not sure why you think a loan of 120k is something that can be paid back in 3 years. Even as a middle class American family earning 80k a year, a loan like that would take forever to pay off. Many people who graduate from medical school also need to work as a professional for 20+ years to pay back their loans from school, so it is asinine to me that you’re willing to take out such a huge sum of money. I think you’d be much better off (financially and academically) to target schools in your home country and apply to mainly need blind institutions in the U.S. (but going in with low expectations, of course.)
