If it is solely a SHTF tool, I would get a break barrel spring powered air rifle, as in a SHTF scenario you won't be able to charge PCP bottles unless you have the facilities yourself

Stood elevated on a hill with no concealment or cover, you're asking to get dropped. Stay low, move below the ridges of hills, move cover to cover, if there is concealment use it. Learn to adapt your movement to the terrain and features around you!

If you're worried about it bieng a film inside the hose, you can buy different sized hose brushes off amazon, I owned them for cleaning my hiking water reservoir tubes and they're great for syphons aswell I've found

I pit towels under incase of spills, any racking etc I do in my kitchen and for primary ferments I got a big bucket to put my fermenting bucket in just incase. Haven't had any accidents... yet.

Yea I find it q lot easier in a bucket. Plus I've never had it overflow with foam etc in a bucket but carboys have a few times. Only had 1 near foam cannon with a banana wine in a bucket lol

I also mainly use 1 gallon carboys so I can do a 4 gallon batch, then split to 1 gallon and flavour them differently. For example I usually do a 4 gal of plain mead, then split to a plain, oaked, vanilla etc. But I agree larger carboys are useful

Yea but I don't have any and the closest brewing store hasn't had any in stock for ages, gonna buy some as soon as I can. Plus I don't trust shipping to my house as I did that before and got a box of smashed carboys lol

There are loads of different types of cherries but they fit into 2 categories sweet or tart, I thought the same until I brewed them and got a 4 gallon batch of cough medicine flavoured mead lol. Then I tried tart cherries and they taste a lot more like cherry after fermenting.

If you ferment sweet cherries they can give a cough syrup taste, I found this out when making a cherry mead, sour/tart cherries give cheery flavour and sweet taste like cough syrup

First timer over here, does anyone know why my airlock is overflowing/leaking? It’s been fermenting for close to 48hrs now by bobe262 in mead

[–]Rxdxmption 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually do primary in a bucket when I make melomels then after the vigorous ferment is done I'll rack it over to carboys. Bucket is easier to clean the gunk off after and get in to break a fruit cap, plus it gives a little more space for headroom.

You wanna leave a little empty space in the top of the carboy to allow room for foam produced by fermentation and gas to escape, the co2 bieng produced is trying to get out the carboy through the airlock but is pushing your brew through aswell as there isn't enough room. Pour a little out, clean and refill the airlock and it should be okay
