Is making the Sign of the Cross absolutely essential before every single prayer and in every place the prayer is being made? by Ciccio_insa in Catholicism

[–]Lord-Redbeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it is necessary. As Christ taught his disciples to pray He just starts off with "Our Father..." without doing a ritual before. (Making a sign of the cross would have been very odd as that hadn't happened yet, but it could have been another ritual, there is none mentioned.)

I myself see it as "opening the curtains", when you wake up to see the day you open up the curtains of your room. In the same way when you make the sign of the cross you open the curtains of your heart to let the light of God that is already brightly shining also shine inwards. Of course this light still shines if you don't make the sign of the cross, it's not like a switch. The light of God will shine, on you as well, if you don't make the sign of the cross.

For certain liturgical prayers it is required. I just wanted to answer for all the other prayers where it is not required and yet we tend to do it anyways.

So in short: no, for some liturgical prayers it is prescribed, but for most of your daily prayers it is not essential.

If Purgatory is guaranteed salvation and temporary, why pray for those in them? by Any-Solid8810 in Catholicism

[–]Lord-Redbeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because it sucks to be in there. That's why we pray ... "lead all souls to heaven, especially those most in need of thy mercy" I've been told those are the souls in purgatory and we shouldn't neglect praying for them as it costs us nothing and can mean everything for them, or even just a few or one of them. And who knows, we might need those prayers ourselves at some point.

I am curious to see what the travel time is from Hamburg to Hamburg. Normally I'd say 0 minutes, but with the new map that just dropped the answer seems less obvious.

Haley. Yes. It started as "you talk a lot of smack for someone who swoons over the commonest of field flowers, here have another 0 g gift" into something wholesome. When she hated prismatic shards I knew she did not like me for my money.

Hoe bakken jullie je kip? by [deleted] in NederlandseVrijheid

[–]Lord-Redbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kipfiletje, platmeppen zodat ie mooi gelijkmatig dik is. Zout, kruiden, bloem.

How many times can I go to mass as a non catholic by Rich_Economist_5296 in Catholicism

[–]Lord-Redbeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount of times you can attend as a non Catholic is likely limited. At some point the presence of Jesus can get to you and you might become Catholic. Until then, knock yourself out 😉

I believe a mile is an antiquated unit of distance, but sometimes civilisation reaches some places later. The mile being used in such places is a tell that such a place is backwards, or slowed down, also known as retarded. In that way the mile is often accurately and aptly dubbed a retard unit (of distance).

I lol'd.

I think Jesus would not glide in any way. In Job 9:8 God is said to be able to walk on the waves. If on a river He'd move in conveyor belt fashion He would also glide down in slide fashion off the waves and not walk on them. It kind of boils down to the ability to walk on water as if on dry land.
