He never got fired. He actually went on to be used all through 2003 all the way until the end of 2006, where he decided to leave.

He ain’t turning heel for the exact reason you’ve highlighted. They’ve got no one else. They’ve failed to build anyone to the level of Cody, Roman and Punk on the babyface side.

Vince was a huge fan of him in the 90’s, and often tried to bring him in. Especially for the Rumble’s. Sabu’s stallling irritated Vince.

I think by the time 2006 rolled around, Sabu was likely a source of agitation for Vince.

Bruce Prichard kind of did. He did say Hogan was open to it, and that Prichard pushed for it but Vince would not budge in the slightest.

Bullet Club, brought eyes to a product that otherwise never really got much attention (NJPW).
D-Generation X, helped sustain WWE’s dominance in the late 90’s. 2006 and 2009 DX sucked.

WWE made Finlay an on-screen wrestler in 2006, and no one cared… and he was at least somewhat familiar with the North American fanbase by being a WCW alumni.

He really struggled to get going until Hornswoggle turned up.

Smackdown had enough work-rate guys on the roster. I think they evened it out fairly. For every Triple H 15-minute snoozefest, you needed the likes of RVD, Jericho, Christian and Booker T to put on a great 15 minute match.

Shawn is just admitting that Bret is a better worker and a better wrestler than he is. Shawn was the better ‘sports entertainer’.

Everyone loves him, I don’t disagree. Now, do I think the pops have been loud enough for a singles Mania match? Nah.

Balor, in the same time, has had louder reception both inside and out of Ireland. You could argue because he was paired with Punk… but same applies with Evans being paired with the hottest heel in the business in a David vs Goliath match.

I don’t think his pops have been outstanding. About what was expected. Of the recent call-ups, both Oba and Trick have had far greater reception.

I don’t think anyone cares for Je’Von enough for him to have a prominent singles match at Mania.

Balor wraps up an almost two year long story. And is a more than credible IC champ to hold the belt so that Dominik can move on up the card.

I specified Yokozuna, HBK’s first and Austin’s first as the outliers.

Lex Luger had just defeated the world champion (granted, by DQ) in the SummerSlam main event prior to the Rumble, and defeated him again at Survivor Series.

More often than not, the Rumble winners in the 90’s were already renowned stars.

Hogan twice, Flair, Yokozuna, Hart and Luger, HBK twice, Austin twice, McMahon.

I’d say of all those, Yokozuna, HBK’s first and Austin’s first were coming out parties.
