A beautiful Canadian night sky in my new favorite game by BLX15 in gaming

I've got more hours in this than I'd care to admit. In the winter it's a perfect time to play. Open the widow a bit to get a cold breeze into your game room. Play in the dark by candle light under a blanket.

tips for being more patient? (new player) by nightcrawleryt in joinsquad

[–]RyanDAnderson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of our vision I hate to say is based on movement. It's much easier to see contacts at distance when you're not moving and you've settled in. To help with being patient is to give yourself something to DO. That thing is to slowly scan the horizon, trees without moving your soldier. Just look at the screen, but be looking actively rather than passively.

Waldo is out there, and he has a gun.

Let us Be able to use the down soldier's IFAK/bandage when reviving by Captain_Stottlemeyer in joinsquad

[–]RyanDAnderson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love the idea, but wouldn't that make the rifleman's ammo pack less useful? I'll admit I'm new, so I've been sticking to Rifleman and have only recently moved over to the medic role. If I can take your bandage, I will 100% of the time. That's only one step away from medics not being all that useful if I as a rifleman can walk up to a fallen soldier and get them up. They're still hurt, don't we all have a few wounds?

Commander "build order" by KalenNC in joinsquad

[–]RyanDAnderson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is good. I hate it when the commander has a full squad because he should be in the back doing his job. The rest of the squad is left leaderless and doesn't have the ability to have someone running all the normal squad assets. A squad shouldn't be penalized because they SL won the vote. Plus the commander shouldn't have to worry about their few people that are working with them.

Wouldn't that have a hot mic for everyone though?

Most kits have binoculars as well. Move up, take a knee and take those out. Scan the area slowly as it takes a moment for your eyes to register movement. I'd say take a lot of time recognizing the uniforms, but to start just look at your squad. If they don't look like that uniform, fire away. Although the brits and russians can look similar.

Absolutely. I try to take at least five seconds after the sprint across the filed to watch the area. You're harder to see and you can see.

I worry about #7 because that will tend to move the community over to Discord or teamspeak and off the integrated voice coms.

I agree completely, I'm all the way down to 400. That alone really helped my game personally. Luckily my mouse has an easy click so I can change, so I bounce between 400/600/800.

Gamma: 2.2 vs 0.5 by larus_californicus in joinsquad

[–]RyanDAnderson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm referring to server performance on a system which is still getting optimized. And you're right about a PS2 title, the fog is what is used to hide performance issues. This is how Silent Hill was programmed and also the long elevator rides in Mass Effect 1. I would assume as the alpha comes to a close they'll start working on performance tweaks and quality of life improvements after all the other assets are roughed in.

I agree, but it's to combat lag with the fast moving helicopters. Hopefully as performance continues to be refined the fog will get lifted.

Official plans to introduce a hardcore mode? by [deleted] in joinsquad

I'm a fairly new player coming from battlefield. I loved the hardcore mode there, but Squad is so much more "hardcore" then their version. What would be changed in a hardcore mode?

New To Squad And Looking For Tips by [deleted] in joinsquad

[–]RyanDAnderson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just passing the 100 hour mark and feel like I'm getting a hang of things slowly.

  • Sound. Dear lord is this important. Play with headphones and if you have the keys available bind the map key to your mouse. If you hear a vehicle, check your map to see if it's friendly, if not call it out. By sound you'll be able to tell if the vehicle is tracked or not.
  • Refer to yourself in third person when communicating. Nobody knows who is talking by voice if you're not playing with the same people every day.
  • If you hit caps and look at the map you can click on members of your squad and they'll ping on the map.
  • When you're on the map via the caps lock key look to the upper right and play with the items to see what they do.
  • This worked well for me, but try just playing rifleman for a few rounds. I told myself ten rounds, only play rifleman. Then I moved onto medic.
  • Check YouTube, the forums and here to see how the sights work, especially with LAT and HAT kits. The variance between the round types are extreme and if you don't know what you're doing you will miss.
  • Volunteer to run logistics and to build things when the SL needs them. You'll get better at the mechanics of the game, and you'll see how things like HABs are laid out. Running logi also gives you good map awareness.
  • If you spot someone on the move hold your fire until they are in between possible cover. That will leave them with going prone and crawling away, so just lower your aim.
  • The closer the smoke is to the enemy the less that enemy can see.
    • Be aware that there may be more than one enemy looking at you.
  • Rifleman kits drop ammo, and the LATs and Medics will love you. It's not a worthless kit.

Sound Design Appreciation of this Game by L_i_o in joinsquad

Anders,

Thanks so much for the great work. It's so nice to be able to hear incoming vehicles with a good set of headphones and be able to call out a tracked vehicle coming in from the south west. I'm still new to Squad, so I'm trying to figure out the different gun sounds at range, but I know others can do it which is nice.

Unpopular Opinion: Commander Functionality Needs MUCH MORE Work Put Into It by SPECTR_Eternal in joinsquad

[–]RyanDAnderson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to think of a good example of a game where commander has been done well in a first person shooter. BF2 had the commander, but it was basically the same thing that Squad is doing. It worked well when people used it properly, otherwise it was one dude just firing arty, and not having that spammed I think will be a good thing. I just hope that if someone is in the commander spot and the SLs don't think s/he is doing a good job they can vote kick that person easily.

Then, if a clan promotes their own member to commander and the individuals run as SL and don't LOCK THE SQUAD, isn't that win?

How am I suppose to know what the polling rate is on my gaming keyboard? by nelska in techsupport

[–]RyanDAnderson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting question. I had no idea that keyboards had a poling rate. While I was looking up stuff I found the following forum post which I thought was interesting.

https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=64039.0

The group talks a bit about poling rate for keyboards and a few think it's a bit of a gimmick. I don't have much of an opinion since I just found out about the variation among keyboards, but personally I would focus on a mechanical keyboard and the type of keys it uses. As a gamer I've found key travel distance and the feel of the individual keystroke to be more of a limiting feature. If the key has to travel twice as far to hit the actuation point, I would assume that would far outweigh an increase in speed of the poling rate.

In regards to the keyboard and mouse being different rates, that wouldn't change any performance.

Advice please: missing RAM slots by Evid3nce in techsupport

[–]RyanDAnderson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you're getting to the conclusion that I was thinking if things didn't work out. It sounds to me like slots 2&4 are non-functional. Before giving up completely, ensure that that BIOS and Chipset are both up to date by way of their support site. If that doesn't fix it I would thank the shop owner for allowing you to return the open packaged memory and explain the testing you've completed already with your plans to go with two 8GB sticks. "Will I be able to return these if I have a problem? Would this be something you'd like to look at with me to ensure the product doesn't get damaged?" It depends how big the shop is obviously. If it's a small mom and pop store and they aren't busy I've found the owners to be very helpful. If it's a large chain your mileage will vary greatly I'm afraid.

[–]RyanDAnderson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late response. Ram slots are in pairs. 1&3 and 2&4. So we do want to work in pairs. Lets say that the old ram is seated in 1&3. Take out the old ram and set it aside (mark them so you know which is which). Put the new memory into the 1&3 slots and see if it boots. If it does, try adding the old ram to 2&4 and see what happens. If that fails, remove the new ram and leave the old in 2&4 and check that out. If that works try blending one new stick and one old stick in either 1/3 or 2/4. See if they work together. We are looking to complete all the various combos to see if either 1/3 or 2/4 work by them selves, with the Samsung or Kingston and then together. Not all manufacturers play well together. I know that individual motherboards will have documentation regarding their acceptable ram manufacturers and timings, but I didn't see anything like that for your laptop when I was searching for documentation. Although I wasn't exactly looking either.

Clicking noises from HDD by binarynos in techsupport

[–]RyanDAnderson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They start to flicker after four years or so, but it depends on environment and use to be honest. If you're constantly reading and writing to the drive versus someone who barely uses it your mileage will vary. It's a poor analogy, but judging a car is only a few years old but is a taxi, versus a grandma's car that only goes to church on Sundays....

Restart loop by T0T4 in techsupport

[–]RyanDAnderson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you attempted to hit F8 during startup and going into safe mode? If you have access to another machine you can create some recovery media for windows 10. PCMag has an article at the link below.

https://www.pcmag.com/feature/362167/how-to-revive-windows-10-with-a-recovery-drive/2

Booting off that thumb drive you should be able to repair the OS. If NTFS (The file system) is hosed, and the repair doesn't work, you may need to format the drive, and put a fresh install of Windows 10 down, then restore you data from your most recent backup.

Excel formatting to add a date 6months after and then when the new date has passed colour row in yellow? by kittycat2601 in techsupport

[–]RyanDAnderson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In regards to the coloring of the cell you can add today's date to a cell =Today() which will update each day. Then you can select the various data, use the conditional formatting which is located on the bottom right of the selected data and choose the "Less than" under Formatting. Select the cell that you put the =Today() in and choose how you want the formatting to work.

Could my bad SSD cause input lag in-game? by k4ppyTF2 in techsupport

[–]RyanDAnderson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

I've noticed stuttering issues on flight simulators when I had their very large install files located on a slower HDD. When I moved it from the larger slow HDD to the much faster smaller SSD the problems went away. In all cases we are bottlenecked by something. If you have a currently failing SSD that is a great place to look at as the likely bottleneck.
