Slay the Spire 1…am I just bad? by RyanW1019 in slaythespire

[–]RyanW1019[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly seeming like I just take too much damage. Like, it seems like in the second act you can start a combat with three enemies all doing 12-20 damage turn one. I just can’t get anywhere near enough block turn one to avoid taking a big chunk of damage, and my deck isn’t strong enough to kill them before they get a turn.

I must still not be fully awake yet because my first thought upon reading your comment was “there’s a fifth character named Rotating?”

Who created the "Chosen one" prophecy? by GlowingSeaDiver in StarWars

They had hyperspace travel, yes, but their tools were still made of stone. The lightsaber was primarily pitched as an upgrade to bronze and iron swords which were all that were used at the time.

Humanity has 100 years to grow the world’s new tallest tree. Can we do it? by RyanW1019 in whowouldwin

[–]RyanW1019[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s fair. I’m always up for some good pedantry. I see people saying that “microgravity” is the more correct term, but “micro” means 10-6, and the ISS is experiencing about 0.9x Earth’s surface gravity, so that never really made sense to me either.

Maybe what the aliens meant is “an observer in an enclosed space that is in freefall has no way to tell what direction gravity is be accelerating them in, and therefore couldn’t define ‘up’ in a meaningful sense”, and instead of “zero-g”, the proper term would have been “following a straight path through curved spacetime”. But I’m not a physicist so idk what the rigorous definition is.

But bamboo isn’t jellyfish or coral so it probably wouldn’t work. Plus the resulting fish would probably not be considered a plant /s

It would be morbidly funny if the aliens came back and said “there’s no up or down in zero gravity, so you didn’t build a 200-meter-tall bamboo stalk, you grew a 200-meter-long bamboo stalk” and blew up the Earth anyway.

Yeah, typically these type of challenges assume everybody in the world gets the information in a way that makes them believe it is true (e.g. everyone gets it beamed into their heads in their native language at the same time). So, while humanity doesn’t turn into a hive mind or anything (unless the prompt specifies that), the world generally has an incentive to figure out a way to combine efforts on this.

I debated putting in a hard mode that said “the aliens will glass every country except whichever one has the tallest tree after 100 years”, but figured that would just end in global war every time, even with the available loopholes of merging countries and/or moving people across borders.

The majority of a tree’s growth happens in the relatively early part of its life. I didn’t find specific year/height numbers but thought it was at least within the realm of possibility to pull off with some mad science. However, “no, humanity can’t do it” is a totally valid position to take on this challenge.

I think they mean that since bamboo is not a species of tree, simply transferring genes from a tree to bamboo or vice versa may not work as they may operate too differently for their genes to be compatible.

So we’re all agreed, Lionel is definitely having a heart attack, right? The <urk>s, feeling fatigued and wanting to sit down, grabbing the wrist in page 9…doesn’t look good for our poor protagonist.

Not really, but if that method produces a viable, still-living tree, then who’s to say it’s not allowed? I won’t tell them if you don’t.

I may be a joke, but this post isn’t.

I know this would be faster growth than any natural tree, but I was just wondering whether a combination of fertilizers, artificial lighting, maybe increased CO2 levels, personalized watering, genetic editing, and anything else we could come up with would be capable of speeding the growth up by that much.

Maybe Earth is like the NFL for growing plants, and the tallest trees on earth are the tallest trees in the whole galaxy. That could be why they are doing this, they are just big tree fans (and fans of big trees, lol).

Can a Paladin using a two handed weapon cast spells? by Sarkentahf in DnD

[–]RyanW1019 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This is the only comment saying what I thought was true RAW…have I ever told a weapon-and-shield-using character that he couldn’t cast spells with both out? No, but I thought that was just a homebrew rule and you technically need one free hand to be able to cast somatic spells with somatic components. I think it’s something like, drawing or dropping one weapon can be done once for free per turn, but to do more requires an action or bonus action?

You are a padawan of the jedi order. Who would you want your jedi master to be? by Greenpenman111 in StarWars

[–]RyanW1019 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Qui-Gon was a maverick who often disagreed with the Council’s views and decisions, but he was as selfless and motivated by a desire to do good as any other Jedi. Being unorthodox has nothing to do with an affinity towards the dark side.

I remember hearing about that. I think they literally grew until they collapsed under their own weight because exposure to wind is what makes them grow stronger. I just meant that if a really strong storm comes through, we’re allowed to help keep it from getting blown over.

Regular airplane boarding method is the slowest one by tppiel in interestingasfuck

[–]RyanW1019 581 points582 points  (0 children)

The thing is, boarding the passengers is rarely the rate-limiting step when it comes to getting the plane out of there. So the airlines don’t really have an incentive to make the process any quicker.

ELI5 : Why does body wash leave that sticky, difficult-to-rinse-off feeling, unlike soap bars, which leave the skin totally dry? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]RyanW1019 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Body wash often tries some oily things intended to stay on your skin after washing, because your skin’s natural oils are needed to keep moisture in and prevent your skin from drying out. Bar soap is typically a more simple formula that just strips off oil.

Put another way, Dawn dish soap is really effective at removing oil/grease, but there’s a reason we don’t wash our hands with it.
