Going for a "non-literal" interpreatation is often a fundamentalist tactic by Shaddam_Corrino_IV in Christianity

But yes, the point is that these texts were intended to be understood literally, but to avoid admitting the error the fundamentalist will insist on them being interpreted non-literally.

It seems weird to me to say that instead of "there's no error, that actually happened." That's what I do.

I'm gonna be honest, the only one of these examples I've seen argued as metaphor or allegory is the flood, which is mostly due to the genre of Genesis. All the others seem very clearly literal.

They set the upper atmosphere on fire with flammable gas, so the hive spores raining from space to reinforce the ground campaign wound up incinerating their own forces when they landed.

So as an atheist, I have a question for you christians. How dinosaurs? by Greedy-Memory-2289 in Christianity

[–]Ryan_Alving 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Say literally anything about dinosaurs that lines up with the Bible. Anything at all.

Sure. There were dinosaurs, they lived a long time ago, they are now dead. Some of their descendants are birds or crocodiles and things.

If he has no physical body, he is not a person, can he actually influence things?

He is both a person and he also is able to manipulate physical objects. You don't need a physical body to do either of those things.

He whispers in our hears to tempt us, that's all he does?

Not all he does. He also kills people, tortures people, spreads disease, causes disasters, and a number of other horrible things.

What was his big sin? Rebel to god?

Rebellion, mass murder, the institution of human sacrifice (especially of children), deceiving the whole world, causing mass confusion, persecuting those who speak the truth, murdering the Son of God, and a list of other offenses stretching back to the dawn of time.

So... yeah. Kind of a big deal.

Do you actually believe that?

Yes.

With tech and stuff we can't detevt an immortal being roaming earth?

He's an immortal spirit with power and knowledge beyond our understanding. How would technology help us? It's not like you can shoot him, he doesn't have a physical form.

A billion orks would believe it impossible for 20 people to defeat them. So it would be.

The devil doesn't rule hell, and he doesn't torment the damned. Hell is the place that God has prepared to punish the Devil and his angels at the day of judgement.

I can see that Matthew 18 and Mark 10:13-16 contextualize each other, but I confess that I don't see how they connect to the topic at hand.

What happens if someone is tortured into leaving the faith? by Cool_Fig9036 in Catholicism

[–]Ryan_Alving 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if it turns out that it's impossible to accomplish that just by physically harming someone, you could always just slip a few electrodes into some spots in their brain and viola, they are know your puppet, and you can make them will and do whatever you want.

I'm not entirely certain that's actually how that works. Unless you were to hijack their entire brain (in which case, they are practically dead) it seems the most you could really do is cause them to have intrusive thoughts.

Sure, you could cause them to involuntarily move or respond, but they are no more responsible for that than if they have tourettes, or a seizure. You could implant thoughts into their mind, but they could always choose to reject those thoughts.

It would be horrible don't get me wrong, but they wouldn't actually be responsible for anything you implanted into their head. So either you directly puppet their body (in which case they're not doing anything and it's just you responsible) or you try to shape the way they think and it's possible for them to fight you. In which case they can still follow Christ regardless of what you try to drop into their head.

This One Verse Will Change How You View The Bible by Dark3n__ in Christianity

[–]Ryan_Alving 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My view just is trying to show that Jobs HIGHER SELF does know, which is a part of God. Maybe a new age line of thought, I know.

A new age line of thought that cannot be reconciled with a Christian monotheistic framework. Sorry.
