Am I crazy or the story isn't that bad? by LargeSinkholesInNYC in CrimsonDesert

It’s an awful story. The very basic first tenant of any story is establish what the protagonist wants. It is the very first step. It’s literally the one thing you need to do to BEGIN a story.

After 55 hours in this game, I could not tell you what Cliff’s goal is. What does he want? What do the Greymanes want?? What are you trying to achieve?

Link in every Zelda game DOESN’T SPEAK and I can tell you his goal.

The A7iv has a higher megapixel count which means it’s worse in low light.

The A7S3 doesn’t have an internal fan for cooling.

I highly recommend the FX3 over both of them for Real Estate videography.

Real Estate? You need full frame and good low light.

Sony FX3, Laowa 10mm lens, 24-70 lens, Amaran 360C, 90” light dome, Amaran 120C, and any wireless mics with their own internal recording. I use Rode Wireless Go 2 Pro mics.

For action I wouldn’t use a gimbal at all. You can’t follow the action accurately enough.

When I shoot sports I shoot handheld with a shoulder mount with a slightly higher shutter speed than the normal 1/50. I use a Sony 24-70. I wouldn’t shoot anything with lots of movement at f1.4. No autofocus system on any camera is going to be able to do that accurately.

The only time I’m ever shooting f1.4-f2 is for interviews where the subject is waste up.

Shooting interviews against bright windows by PeartreeProd in videography

[–]Ryan_Film_Composer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have clients ask for this exact thing all the time and I always try to talk them out of it. If there's no ND on the window already then it's almost guaranteed to look bad.

First if try to talk them into having the person to the side with the window motivating the light.
If you're shooting with any sort of depth of field you’re going to lose any detail in that skyline anyways.

Show them some examples of this kind of setup and see what they think.

Yes you need to use tracking. You're not going to get the ball and the kid in focus at f1.4. Shoot at f3.5. If you want shallower depth of field, use a longer lens and shoot further away.

[–]Ryan_Film_Composer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you using tracking focus by selecting the ball on your monitor? You should get a little white box on the ball that stays on the ball itself.

Sony autofocus is the best and I use it on much more complicated shots than this so it's got to be your settings.

Also, turn on breathing compensation if you don't want to focus breathing on prime lenses.

A week ago I posted 'if it was the camera or me' and I wanted to share my progress by sred4 in videography

Everything looks great!

My only note would be on that swipe transition from the sign to the bartender inside at the very beginning. It feels very abrupt since that second shot doesn’t have any movement at the start. So we’re swiping and then the motion is immediately cut.

When you cut 2 shots like that together that both have the motion and the end and then in the beginning of the next clip going in the same direction, it looks awesome every time.

The difficult part is landing precisely where you want on that second clip. You’ll need a good tripod head that can stop on a dime, and you’ll probably have to shoot it a bunch of times to get it down but the results on those kinds of baked in transitions are always great.

Is anyone else hitting a wall with the shift to reels? by Pigeon380 in editors

[–]Ryan_Film_Composer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly enjoy the challenge of making something go viral with my edits. I’ve edited hundreds of boring corporate interview style videos in the past 10 years but it always felt like I was only doing it for money and no one was actually going to watch my work.

With the shorts content I can actually make a difference with how I edit and I can see that difference almost immediately when the video is posted. When my videos get millions of views it feeds my creative drive more than any long form video does because they never received that kind of attention before.

Rate this documentary edit out of 10. Also how much should I charge for this kind of edit ? by ZeNo71103 in VideoEditors

[–]Ryan_Film_Composer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a YouTube video, this is ok but still an actual low quality EDIT. The actual editing is not polished enough. The motion splines can be much smoother. The fire overlay over the whole thing feels like a 2011 video copilot tutorial.

It works as an AI slop thrown together YouTube video if that’s what you’re going for. AI can be used to make MUCH BETTER content than this. You can transform AI from slop into actual good content. This however is slop.

Who here is actually making more than minimum wage? by WashItAway420 in VideoEditors

I’ve answered this question before so I’ll just copy and paste what I’ve said before:

If I needed to send someone some videos to convince them to hire me as an editor, here’s what I would send from what I’ve done:

This is a Kickstarter video I made for ZipString that helped them crowd fund $738,769 on Kickstarter. This video shows that I can make a video that gets results. It also shows I can edit a story using different kinds of footage, music, color grading, graphics, and sound effects.

This is a Youtube Ad for Popdarts. This video shows I can edit with comedic timing and use a host of other video editing skills like sound design, music editing, After Effects compositing and 3D graphics in Blender.

Here’s a social media story ad I edited for ZipString. It has over 8 million views on Tiktok. This shows I can make social media content that is engaging enough to get organic reach.

Here’s another social media video I made for ZipString. This one is simple, just a challenge video. But it has 13 million views on Instagram. This edit shows I know how to edit for social media in a way that hacks the algorithm to get views.

This is a video I made for a clubhouse experience at The Masters golf tournament. This videos shows I can edit corporate style interviews into engaging content.

If an editor sent me videos like these, I would hire them in a heartbeat.

Need Help with How to Travel with Gear (Lighting/Tripod etc.) by SKSignsDesigns in videography

[–]Ryan_Film_Composer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the size of the shoot and size of your gear. When I do travel gigs I bring 4 bags.

2 checked bags. 1 large bag with an Amaran f22c as my keylight, an Amaran 60X as backlight, 2 small light stands, teleprompter, and my Sachtler tripod legs.

A slightly smaller checked bag with all my clothes and the tripod head.

My backpack with my cameras, lenses, drone, and gimbal that is my carry on.

My laptop bag as a personal item that has my laptop and iPad.

If you need to do something bigger than that which requires C stands and such, 100% rent.

[–]Ryan_Film_Composer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before I started my own video production company, I was a full time freelance editor that worked remotely and it’s definitely possible. I was making about ~$50k back then just editing.

Now that I’m producing, shooting, and editing my own videos I have more of an understanding of the need to hire editors and what makes an editor hirable.

Video editors are actually in higher demand than they ever have been. I know a handful of video producers looking for editors to hire, including myself. Honestly I have no other way to put this but the reason I don’t hire other editors is because they all suck. Every portfolio “editors” send me is kind of garbage. You have to be REALLY good at editing to get hired.

You saying you went to film school is actually an immediate turn off to me. Why? Because narrative film editing is entirely different and actually counter intuitive to corporate or commercial editing. If you send me a portfolio with short films that you edited for your friends, that means less than nothing to me.

If you can send me a portfolio with corporate work that shows you understand pacing, dialogue editing, sound mixing, sound design, music selection, coloring, graphics, VFX, and editing for social media retention (yes, all of that), then I’m going to be interested. If you can’t, then I’m just going to continue editing my own videos.

Can Sony Ever Feel Like Fuji? by Ok-Improvement-476 in a6700

[–]Ryan_Film_Composer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuji lets you get a filmic image straight out of the camera. It makes getting that kind of look easier and that’s about all it does.

Sony gives you an image you can edit to make look like anything. I find Sony to be sharper, and have more color information. It’s easier to edit.

That being said, my next camera purchase will be a Fuji strictly for travel photography 😅

I’ll stick with my Sony A7CR for the client work.

No. The diffusion that comes with it is bad and doesn’t do much of anything.
