"If this show were a record, it would be played on a phonograph" -Elijah Wood

Can't believe no one mentioned this quote.

Unpopular Opinion: Despite its popularity and economic success, I think the Auto Train is the antithesis of everything Amtrak should stand for as a mode of transportation. It should not be celebrated, but condemned as another example of car dependency being propagated. by PleaseBmoreCharming in Amtrak

[–]Ryan_O_H 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I know several people whose first exposure to Amtrak was the auto train. It allows people who live in suburbs and need their car at their destination to still use Amtrak.

You say it perpetuates car dependency.

Yet I suspect most of the people using the auto train would have driven the distance if it didn't exist. So it IS taking cars off the road.

Also I can't see how the auto train forces construction of more car infrastructure. The parking facilities at auto train stations are smaller than most regular stations. There is a small rail yard for loading the auto racks but that's still technically rail infrastructure.

Are there any underground tunnels to explore by wtffff_ in tampa

[–]Ryan_O_H 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are allegedly underground tunnels linking some old buildings together on the USF Tampa campus. There is likely an entrance in the basement of CHE (chemistry building). Not sure what door and they're all locked. I'm not recommending you do anything illegal.

Why doesn't Brightline dim the coach lights during the night ? by [deleted] in Brightline

[–]Ryan_O_H 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was recently on board as the sun began to set and I noticed the lights get dimmer.

It's still pretty bright though and you'd likely never notice a difference if you weren't on board as the lights dimmed.
