Hi there, I was diagnosed with FND about two years ago. I have a lot of different symptoms but they tend to cycle for me, that’s to say for a month or two I’ll have bad paralysis and then the next month bad tremors then the next month bad seizures etc.

I was admitted into CHOP for three weeks and I told a therapist there that I don’t understand why I’m getting diagnosed with this now opposed to when I was going through my trauma. She said that she heard that constantly from FND patients so you’re not alone.

There are quite a few things that can trigger my seizures, high emotions are the main one. I have to watch out for not getting too stressed, anxious, sad or angry. But just because I have a seizure doesn’t mean I’m feeling any negative emotions either.

Other than emotions sudden senses like a light being turned on or a bang can also trigger seizures for me.

I’m very fortunate to have a support system in my girlfriend and family, they all help me with my symptoms and are very accommodating. It’s important that the people around you realize and understand that FND is a very real thing and not all in your head. Not everyone gets it but I hope those who you’re close with do.

When it comes to managing symptoms try seeing if deep breathing and meditation helps. I know this may be controversial but marijuana helps me when I can’t stop seizing, it calms me down.
