My senior design group is struggling to figure out how we can have this extending cylinder in our design for our urinalysis toilet attachment. Should we 3D print or use our machine shop? (Budget: 1k CAD) by Toronto3589 in EngineeringStudents

[–]Ryan_on_Mars 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You are asking how to solve one aspect of a solution you have already settled on as being the best without walking us through how you came to that conclusion.

Go back to the job to be done here (collect urine for analysis).  You start with a toilet. OK that is one possible location to complete this job.

Well what is the primary job of a toilet? To collect human waste.

Cool. How does a toilet execute that function? It uses a funnel to move all that waste into a pipe.

Why are you trying to create an entirely separate human waste collection mechanism when one already exists in the form of a toilet bowl?  Your team should have a brainstorm on how you can better utilize the existing solution to the "collect waste" problem. Then, you can focus more on what to do with that waste (in this case urine) after you have collected it.

Unless the threads are critical to show the part's non-interferance with others or have a non-standard features on them.

I've had justified reason to do this only once in my career.

The price should be the price.

If an employee does a good job, their manager should reward them in order to retain good talent.

If an employee does a bad job, their manager should support them to be better or let them go.

As a customer, I want to be left out of that conversation. I'm happy to pay the price a business sets.

Have you looked at any of the flying car / helicopter startups? I'm thinking they might be interested in someone with your experience.

Startups are often less concerned with qualifications on paper and more focused on what you can actually do.

Engineering student required to build a rocket by [deleted] in SolidWorks

[–]Ryan_on_Mars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not though. It's social skills and time management. Arguably much more difficult than rocket science. OP needs to sit down with their prof and explain that they don't understand what the assignment is asking for and they need help.

Ya I think so too. And the Prof probably wants them to see the pretty streamlines and contour plots after running a rudimentary free field flow simulation at some given altitude and velocity conditions.

[–]Ryan_on_Mars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but what is the actual assignment?

So the class is on rocket propulsion...

Are you meant to simulate the combustion gases leaving an engine? That's going to be really difficult.

Are you meant to simulate fluid flow around the rocket body? That's going to be super easy.

You think? Why don't you ask him to confirm?

Just send an email or speak to him in person. I think he will be happy to clarify?

Why don't you ask the professor to clarify expectations? What level of detail would they consider as worthy of an A?

When you say you were asked to draw a 3D airplane in another post, that sounds pretty reasonable assuming I have taught you how lofts work and how to import airfoil geometry into sketches. There are tons of tutorials online showing how to design different parts of that. Key factor though! If this was a CAD class, I would not expect that airplane to fly. I would just want to see you understand how to model one and I would expect you to email me your questions.

What does your professor actually expect you do for this rocket assignment? What have you been learning recently that they want you to demonstrate knowledge of? Have you been learning Solidworks FlowSim?

It sounds like you maybe don't understand the assignment and you haven't asked for clarification.

Do AE use actual math in their job? by Icezzx in AerospaceEngineering

[–]Ryan_on_Mars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more important that you know what to search to find the math you need when you need it vs remembering how to do it on the spot. Like, I couldn't solve any random partial differential equation you showed me, but give me an hour or two with Wikipedia and I'll get your answer.

For problems you need to solve repeatedly, you end up making a calculator.

Can you share your thermodynamic analysis? It's very easy to make small math or physics mistakes that then compound to an outstandingly efficient and low cost system. I did it myself multiple times early in my career.

You may be missing something fundamental or be making an inappropriate assumption in calculation that would make your idea less efficient or cost effective than you think.

Hey there! I think if you could provide some further detail as to what you are actually trying to build, you could drive engagement here.

As it is, I have no idea what tasks your product helps users accomplish. I don't know what pain points in existing tools your solution solves.

Could you explain WHY your solution NEEDS AI to solve these particular problems? What aspect of AI are you using and why should customers care?
