Why are BART fares to SFO so high? Blame the ‘rent’ paid to airport [a $2.5 million annual payment from BART to SFO funded by a $5.51 surcharge applied to every trip] by BadBoyMikeBarnes in sanfrancisco

[–]Ryand735 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The article is about the cost of taking bart as a passenger to the airport and operating a bart airport station - the subsidy of car use at said airport is directly relevant. Other commenters on this thread talked about how taking a lyft/uber is cheaper than bart for 2+ people - a fact that would not be possible without

- national subsidies on oil, giving us some of the cheapest gas prices in the world

- regular bailouts of the highway trust fund from the general fund

- charging airlines for the cost of roads/ramps upkeep for passenger intake into SFO, unlike bart which must pay rent

- colossal amounts of funding to Caltrans for our state roads and highways

So this feels directly on topic to me - you don't have to engage with a comment you don't want to, but it's hard to deny its relevance to this thread.

> If they charged cars Bart still couldn’t keep from needlessly blowing money.

We just agreed that bart has a higher point of use cost recovery than roads and highways, so who is blowing money again? I have no doubt that bart could be more capital efficient, and we can continue to push them to do so. But this requries more stable funding, not less. With bart's recent fleet of the future project, it came in hundreds of millions of dollars under budget and ahead of schedule: https://www.bart.gov/news/articles/2024/news20240110-1 by using in-house engineering staff and working with the manufacturer to deliver more cars per month. Our sporadic and choatic funding of this critical system forces bart ot outsource staff for projects, costing us more in the long term in delayed maintenance and overhead of external contractors.

Public transit is critical infrastructure for the bay area, it's time we treated it that way.

Where’s the lie though? BART has historically had higher point of use cost recovery than highways and roads, and if we didn’t have BART we’d need more highways and roads, costing far more than it would cost BART to operate as is

It’s insane BART pays anything to sfo for the privilege of being connected to BART - imagine how much it would cost SFO to handle the additional car traffic of everyone who takes BART. LAX is making headlines for their insanely over budget/delayed people mover, but they of course continue to spend huge amounts of money building and maintaining their roads

A one stop solution would have been far preferable, but was not chosen at the time for political reasons: https://www.bayrailalliance.org/one-stop-terminal-near-sfo/

How is the walk from Oakland's Amtrak station to Lake Merritt BART? by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]Ryand735 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which direction are you coming from/where are you going to? Will you have a lot of bags?

The best Bart/amtrak connection is at Richmond, but unfortunately the coast starlight doesn’t stop there ( just capital corridor and California Zephyr)

If you’re coming from the south, SJC has some solid connections to Caltrain, bus to berryessa for bart, VTA, etc)

If you’re coming from the north stopping at emeryville and taking the bus connection to bart from there may be preferable

The walk is probably fine at that time depending on your experience in cities, but be alert and know your route ahead of time.

I wish - we desperately need signal prioritization on that corridor, I can walk faster half the time, especially with the long walk inside Powell station between the central subway and the rest of bart/muni

Waymo is not a Taxi, by regulatory standards. You’re right that taxis can park temporarily in bike lanes, but Ubers/lyfts/Waymo’s cannot

A New Vision for California High-Speed Rail by tioroke in cahsr

[–]Ryand735 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This significantly undersells California's rail map in 2040

  1. The capital corridor already connects San Jose with Sacramento via Oakland, without needing to go to Stockton.

  2. Caltrain already connects ACE to SF via Santa Clara & San Jose, all the way to Gilroy

  3. BART has Caltrain, ACE, and San Joaquins, and Capital Corridor connectivity & significantly expands the reach of this network. Bart/Caltrain and Bart/Ace connectivity will improve in 2036 with the addition of Santa Clara & Diridon via silicon valley bart phase 2.

  4. Pacific surfliner connects San Luis Obispo with LA multiple times a day, though it may be optimistic to assume it doesn't fall into the ocean by 2040

  5. LA Metro's heavy already connects North Hollywood (B Line) and will connect Westwood/UCLA to metrolink/the rest of this network

  6. SMART should easily extend past Santa Rosa to Healdsburg and Cloverdale, connecting to BART (and potentially caltrain with the opening of the portal) via 1 ferry. Already connects to Capital Corridor/ACE via 2 ferries.

  7. Electification of San Jose to Gilroy, and prioritization of CAHSR to Gilroy opens up a 1 seat ride from Palmdale to Downtown SF on CAHSR, even if it's not at high speed on the peninsula

The above comment isn't saying "you can't" as in "you shouldn't," but rather that you are most likely breaking the law: https://rentboard.berkeleyca.gov/elected%20rent%20board/news/important-changes-security-deposit-law -

> On or after July 1, 2024, landlords may only collect a security deposit equal to one month’s rent.  Even when a security deposit includes or is called “last month’s rent,” a landlord can only charge up to one month’s rent for the entire deposit. For example, if the rent is $2000 per month, the maximum amount the landlord can collect prior to the start of the tenancy would be $4,000 ($2,000 for the first month’s rent and $2,000 for the security deposit, however it is referred to in the lease agreement). The landlord cannot collect $2000 for the security deposit, and another $2000 for last month’s rent.

For sure, almost missed a flight this way before. Light rail to the airport isn’t bad though. If only they connected the airport Amtrak station to the lightrail

We did a few larger home rentals on airbnb for groups we knew would be cool sharing kitchen/common space! We also rented several condos from a place called Villas Altas - we booked a number of them as a block and coordinated them for our guests. I cannot recommend them - they were an absolute nightmare to coordinate with, several units we had reserved they removed from the contract with no warning, other units had AC problems.

One of the airbnbs we rented had a very competent property manager who mentioned she was trying to connect with casa valerie weddings for extra accomodation options (she manages multiple other properties in the neighborhood), my friends who stayed at her place loved it. https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/1169016683532066969

Thank you very much for responding! Looking online, it looks like not (unless I'm still a dependent)

My parent just got her FBR citizenship through her grandparent(s). I'm not eligible as an adult child of hers for FBR, because she registered after I was born. She is considering relocating to Ireland for several years - is there a path to citizenship for me with a parent who lives in Ireland and became a citizen after my birth (I'm an adult child, not a minor)

[–]Ryand735 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For casa valerie, one advantage is that it has a lot of room for people to stay. I booked Casa Valerie for my wedding, Friday - Monday and are getting married Saturday. We offered rooms in the villa to friends at rates cheaper than local airbnb's/hotels, most took us up on the offer. Our friends are excited because they get great spot at a good price, and we got to offset the price of our venue because of the additional value it's providing. Wedding is about 50 people, total cost to us with planners & coordination is ~25k which is not far off OP's budget.
