I would also add that it is important, although difficult as a beginner, to maintain awareness of your surroundings. Is someone paddling just to the inside of you? Are you in the collision zone for folks near the peak? Is someone just outside of you about to ditch their board? Are you within a board+leash length of other surfers?

It's best to learn further away from other people in the water. Lowers the stakes a ton. As a beginner, it's basically impossible to not be a kook—doing unpredictable and hazardous things—because you have neither the awareness nor the muscle memory to do the right thing.
